As he prepares to officially take over this week, new Kansas AD Long's first order of business will be getting to know staffers and coaches already at KU. "I'm not one that believes you just pick up an bring a bunch of people with you as an AD. ... I want to work with the people I have and see if they have the skillsets and tools that we need to be successful. If they don’t, maybe we’ll find a place for them elsewhere in the department, or if not, then it might be in their best interest to seek out another position. But I believe in working with people." Long goes on to note that he will make organizational "tweaks" every three months or so, but that it would be a year or two before "we have the full program implemented." Regarding recent FB woes, Long says he isn't thinking along the lines of whether KU would part ways with HC Beaty, but does have a general preference for making changes at the end of a season, not during. He also acknowledges the role scholarship problems have played in the Jayhawks' struggles, and says while wins and losses will always be a yardstick for measuring success, he'll also look at the character and academic progress made by student-athletes when evaluating a program. The Gender Based Violence Prevention Seminar will provide evidence-based training over four years, giving student-athletes 45 hours of direct instruction on prevention while at KU. Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center Director Brockman: "Kansas Athletics was that first group to step up and say, 'This is important, and we recognize that and we want to be a part of it.’ ... They could see the worth and how this would improve the lives of their students." (link)
After 35 years, 22 members and more churn this offseason, Big South Commish Kallander maintains the league is on solid ground: "I feel really good about where we are. We've grown to 11 institutions, and the two new members coming in (Hampton and USC Upstate) make us better. ... There will always be change in Division I. We're aware of that. But we feel very good about where we are and where we're going." In recent years, the Big South has lost members like Coastal Carolina and Liberty, but Kallander asserts that overall, membership has remained pretty stable through the years. Longwood and Big South Prez Reveley agrees, saying: "We feel with so many tectonic shifts going on, the Big South is in a very strong position. We're really playing offense. We've had a number of schools express interest to us in potentially joining down the road." (link); One of the league's newest members, Hampton, is embracing its HBCU heritage as it joins the Big South, making it one of only two DI HBCUs who aren't members of the MEAC or SWAC. AD Marshall: "We're always going to be an HBCU. That goes without saying. But we wanted to be in the cutting edge of where conference realignment is." The significance of adding an HBCU as a full-time member is also not lost on Kallander, who noted it was not a determining factor but called Hampton's addition a "plus and a strength," adding: "I think it's helpful to have that exposure and that diversity. Alabama FB HC Saban's long-held position that 'Power 5' teams should schedule tougher opponents has not fallen on deaf ears, as LSU Deputy AD Ausberry over the weekend lended his support to the idea. "I agree with him. If the rules change and everybody plays those types of schedules, we’ll play that type of schedule. None of us like playing the ‘buy’ games, the ‘guarantee’ games." Saban in the past has specifically posited that 'P5' programs should only play other P5s in the non-conference, eliminating games against not just FCS programs, but also 'Group of 5' teams. (link)
Despite Disney CEO Iger touting the new ESPN app as the place consumers would eventually interact with ESPN content the most, the network's High Noon show last week was illustrative of at least one obstacle still to overcome. Viewers noticed that video clips hosts Jones and Torre were reacting to were not being shown via the app, and in response, the High Noon Twitter account explained that "unfortunately, there are rights restrictions on the app. ... Hoping it will change one day." According to Sports TV Ratings, not being able to air certain content through the app sends a message that it does not deliver the same experience as watching on TV. The company this week tweeted that the "highlight rights/app thing doesn't getting enough attention. ESPN is conditioning people to not even bother to try watching certain stuff on the app." However, Awful Announcing points out that keeping viewers directed toward the TV may not be the worst-case scenario, at least for right now, as TV ratings are still essential to the Worldwide Leader's business model, "and that may limit how much they're willing to spend on extra rights to improve the off-TV watching experience." Sports Illustrated's Kay offers a look at the hoops court that occupies part of the top floor of the U.S. Supreme Court, where games over the years have matched up future SCOTUS justices at the intersection of academia and sport. One such contest, which included current Justice Thomas in 1993, ended in Thomas tearing his Achilles tendon, while the following year, October Term 1993, SCOTUS nominee Kavanaugh played alongside current Justice Gorsuch while the two clerked for outgoing Justice Kennedy. During his confirmation hearing, Gorsuch lamented having just missed recently retired Justice White, who finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up as a halfback at Colorado, during his clerkship. Chief Justice Roberts, who himself clerked for Justice Rehnquist, recalled White, a three-sport star at CU, as "solid granite, with every large hands that enabled to control the ball with ease" during pick-up games. Meanwhile, former White clerk Cordray recalled playing games with Justice Kagan, a former clerk for Justice Marshall. Kagan: "I would follow [Cordray] around and he would set a pick. The Verge details some of the similarities the emerging eSports space has with traditional professional sports, including structured schedules, wealthy team owners and minimum salaries for players. The transformation began with European soccer clubs signing players to represent them in FIFA (by EA Sports) competitions. From there, clubs' influence grew, with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 operating a League of Legends team on the European professional circuit. Meanwhile, Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-German has its own Rocket League team, and the Philadelphia 76ers became the first North American professional team to enter the space by acquiring Team Dignitas. The global market for eSports is expected to reach $922M in 2018 with an estimated 221M fans. Overwatch League Commish Nanzer explains that Overwatch developer Blizzard had a tournament format in mind when conceiving and developing the game: "It was an opportunity to build something from the beginning of the game’s lifecycle. ... Because we had the opportunity to build it from the beginning, we thought, well, ‘How do we build the entire ecosystem around competitive Overwatch?’ It really was the perfect game to do that with.” Lots more. Drexel sports management professor Maxcy believes there are flaws in the reasoning that Olympic-style added compensation would work for the NCAA, "Who it’s good for is your superstars, so it’s tremendous for Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky. It’s not particularly good for rank-and-file athletes who don’t cash in on endorsements. I think that would be the same for NCAA athletes." Another note from Maxcy in connection to the Jenkins case, "I do think we’re clearly on the way to relaxing NCAA restrictions on player compensation in a lot of ways, but I think that that’s taking a fair amount of time to play out. I think we’re heading in that direction, but it will be slow." (link)

Kansas State inked a new five-year deal with Colbert Hills to continue using the track as Golf's home course. The new agreement also gives both programs an exclusive practice area for the first time.
