In case you missed it, here's yesterday's D1.ticker.
The wildfires in California continue to have a major impact on games & campuses. Sacramento State FB's last home kick of the year was cancelled due to an air quality index of 218, well above the threshold of 200, due to the Camp Fire near Chico. "Options to possibly reschedule the game (against Northern Arizona) will be discussed at a later time." (link); Down in Malibu, Pepperdine's campus looks to have been saved by an "all-out effort" by firefighters from the air & ground as the Woolsey Fire was close enough to see flames from a campus entry point. The Waves postponed hoops, volleyball & water polo match-ups. (linklink, linklink, link)
An announcement for the new AD at Vanderbilt seems ready to tip. Local reporter Kuharsky points to Army West Point boss Corrigan as one of two finalists. Kuharsky is "less certain" of the other finalist, but believes it could be Colorado AD George or "an outside-the-box business person." Timeline: "There are indications Vanderbilt could introduce the new AD by the time the Commodores play UT on Nov. 24 and that the new person could start in January." (linklink)
"Fake news, boys." That's Texas AD Del Conte after reports hit the wire that he had been ejected from the Longhorns' FB tilt with Texas Tech. Turns out, Del Conte was standing near some fans who were razzing the UT sideline & simply started walking away, though it look like he was being escorted off the field. (link, link)
Yahoo's Forde goes in on 10 takeaway from yesterday's FBS action, notes how virtually nothing changed for the College Football Playoff committee. Points to Pittsburgh as "America’s running game juggernaut" by piling up another 492 yards rushing, this time against Virginia Tech, in a 52-22 win. SMU HC Dykes supports his AAC brethren, UCF, in its quest to gain more national support, "Michigan is better up front, and I thought Central Florida had a little bit better skill. I think that’s probably not going to be popular with people in the Big Ten, but that’s my assessment. […] It’s interesting the way stuff is now, and the way it’s designed, where half the teams that play Division I college football really don’t have a chance to win a championship. There’s not another sport anywhere in the world where half of the people that participate have no chance of even being involved. To me, something is wrong, just from that perspective. Otherwise, they need to split it up and do something different." More. (link)

Youngstown State beat Northern Iowa, South Dakota defeated Western Illinois & Indiana State upended Illinois State, likely ending the FCS Playoffs hopes for the Panthers, Leathernecks & Redbirds. In the end, the powerful Missouri Valley may only end up with two squads in the post-season. Missouri State AD Moats, who is on the FCS selection committee, "What happened today in the league was a disaster." (link)

Notre Dame AD Swarbrick on his interview with university president, Father Jenkins, back in 2008, "I never wanted to be an athletic director. I told my wife immediately after we had dinner together, Father John and I, and I said 'I still don't know if I want to be an Athletic Director but I want to work for him.'" Father Jenkins: "I went into that dinner thinking I don't know if this is a serious candidate, you know, he doesn't have any experience." The rest, of course, is history. More from Father Jenkins, "I was impressed with Jack's intelligence. I was impressed with his values. I was impressed with, you know, he got Notre Dame. He understood what it is and what's special about it and we talked about various things. And I remember my thinking evolving during that dinner thinking, 'This is a great guy. He could be a great leader of athletics at Notre Dame.' And the very fact that he was not the normal path candidate made him even more interesting in a way. That he could think outside the box." (link)
Kansas AD Long shoots down speculation he's talking to former Maryland boss Durkin about his opening in Lawrence. Long, ever the engager on Twitter, "KU fans, you don’t know me very well if you believe the latested speculation, I attempt to run a very confidential search and I am doing so now.  The search is ongoing.  Rock Chalk!!" One fan posted "If you talk to Durkin you should be immediately fired," to which Long responded: "And if you believe rumors you should be immediately _____________ Rock Chalk!! [laughing/crying emoji] just joking with you !!!" (link)
Another weekend of college FB, another set of bonuses earned by HCs around the nation. Of note: $10K for Nevada boss Norvell for bowl eligibility, Cal HC Wilcox up to $200K after defeating USC, Clemson's Swinney with another $50K, this time for the Tigers' ACC divisional title, UAB's Clark up to $30K, Cincinnati's Fickell with another $20K for hitting the nine-win mark, Georgia Tech's Johnson up to $125K, Boise State's Harsin gets an automatic year added after defeating Fresno on Friday night, Eastern Michigan is bowl eligible for the second time in three years & Eagles' boss Creighton earns a $25K bonus. More, including Memphis, Missouri, Texas A&M, UConn, Arizona State, Marshall & Middle Tennessee. (link)
Here's a good watch for your weekend, a five-minute look at areas of focus for hoops referees this season. It's produced by the NCAA in what looks to be a series titled, "Weekly Whistles." Keys: 1) Reduce physicality to restrict freedom of movement; 2) Traveling; 3) The elimination of the hook & hold play; 4) Screen & roll plays; and, 5) Consistent enforcement of bench decorum, the coaching box & unsporting conduct rules. There's a bunch of tape that shows "plays of intent" to further illustrate the NCAA's points & further clarification of flagrant fouls. (link)
In this HBR piece, management trainer Lipman points out that under-management is just as much of a problem as micromanagement. Defines the former as "weak performance management, a tendency to avoid conflicts with employees, and generally lackluster accountability." If you think you fall into this category, Lipman suggests: 1) Don't be a conflict-avoider; 2) View goal-setting as mission-critical; and, 3) Ask yourself "Is this work the absolute best you can do? ... Are you doing all you can to set appropriate goals, hold people accountable to them, and deliver the results you need to?" (link)

The South Alabama Board of Trustees gives the green light for the second phase of the school's proposed on-campus FB stadium. So far, bids total $24.5M of the $74M total price tag. Phase II includes concrete for the stadium's lower seating bowl, press tower and athletic administration building shells and underground utility work. Work should begin at the start of 2019 with the goal of opening the stadium ahead of the 2020 season. Funding will come primarily through bonds, with debt service paid from athletic department funds, donations and other "auxiliary enterprises" but Prez Waldrop reiterates that student tuition will not be raised on account of this project. Scroll down to see the video presentation of the plans that was shown at the FB game over the weekend. (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Ed's Zimbalist writes on the situation at Maryland, "How Financial Pressures Can Lead to Athletic Scandals." Thesis: "So, how is Maryland supposed to be able to compete? Obviously, the program needs more money, but it is already at least $15 million in the red each year. One answer appears to be to squeeze as much as possible out of the existing resources. Or more than is possible; hence, the brutality and fear at football practices, and the genuflecting Board of Regents at the altar of the football coach. […] While Maryland’s case might be the most egregious this year, the financial pressures it faces are commonplace in big-time college sports. In the Football Bowl Subdivision, the most commercialized NCAA grouping, with 130 institutions, only about 20 programs annually show an operating surplus — a surplus that usually disappears when full capital costs and other indirect costs are counted." More. (link)
The Wall Street Journal's Korn & Bachman, "When Scandals Hit Campus, College Boards Rarely Get Hurt: With few exceptions, governing bodies tend to survive fallout while presidents and coaches are ousted." At Maryland: "James Brady’s recent resignation as chairman of the University System of Maryland’s board of regents was a rare example of a prominent university board leader taking the fall for a campus scandal." At Michigan State, in connection to the Nassar saga, "No trustees have resigned since the story broke in 2016. The two whose terms end in January didn’t run for re-election; through a university spokeswoman, both declined to say why. The chairman, one of those two, declined to comment further." Association of Governing Boards Prez Legon, "It is important symbolically for the board to demonstrate continuity of leadership." (link)
Also Noticed: Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald gathered his team on the field after yesterday's win to announce that the Wildcats are Big Ten West champs. Pretty neat moment when he said "Wisconsin lost, Purdue lost, WE WON!" (link); UC Davis, currently 8-2 (6-1), will submit to host all possible FCS playoff games at Aggie Stadium. (link); Washington MBB's team bus blew a tire and caught fire after the Huskies game at Auburn on Friday night. Though everyone on board evacuated, thankfully there were no injuries. (link); Auburn FB captain Davis was not pleased with Georgia's fake field goal attempt with 3:20 in the game when the Dawgs were already up 17, quotes his HC Malzahn as saying it was a "bullcrap call." Georgia HC Smart defends the move, saying a FG only gives you a 20-point lead, which three scores by the Tigers would eradicate.
