(Read) Data Crunch: College Basketball Underclassmen NBA Draft Declarations
"Schools can cancel the aid of a student-athlete as soon as he or she provides written notification of transfer, but the aid may not be reduced or canceled until the end of the term. Schools can re-award the scholarship at the end of the term, subject to other financial aid rules." That's from an NCAA release & a move from the 'Power 5' as the student-athlete transfer landscape continues to shift under our feet. Here's how SAAC chair & former UMKC MBB student-athlete Knight sees it, "In fairness to the transfer student-athlete’s teammates, coaching staff and overall team dynamic, the Division I SAAC felt that a student-athlete should not be able to give notification, search for other opportunities, then return to their institution if dissatisfied with their options with no repercussions." Also of particular note, the Collegiate Commissioners Association will review possible changes to the NLI in connection to HCs exiting before incoming student-athletes arrive on their respective campuses. (link)
The NCAA also released data surrounding graduate transfers, "From 2011 to 2017, the number of them tripled in women’s sports and increased by a factor of five in men’s sports. However, there were still only 660 graduate transfers identified in the 2017 Division I academic performance data out of nearly 110,000 Division I student-athletes, which equates to just over one-half of 1 percent." As shouldn't surprise any of us, MBB leads the way at 2.3% of current student-athletes being of the grad transfer variety, followed by WBB, FB & Men's/Women's Track & Field. (link); Here are the full study results, starting with a 5x increase since 2011 for Men's sports & a 3x for Women's. Men's LAX, Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Gymnastics & Women's Water Polo are yet to have a grad transfer for sports with at least 500 student-athletes in the 2017 APR cohort. Tait mentions Colorado State AD Parker, Central Michigan's Alford, former Arkansas boss Long, Ole Miss AD Bjork, SMU's Hart & OU Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Mossman, "the former Castiglione cronies all bring with them impressive resumes, quality experience and familiarity with both the Big 12 Conference and big time college football." Castiglione: "I’ve always placed a level of importance on mentorship as a key role of my leadership," points to "baptism by fire" in some cases, a "more progressive approach" in others. Without naming names, 'Joe C.' indicates those in his tree who may be involved in the KU process have been "very intentional about their own personal growth, always looking for ways to improve." Sooners, continued: The Tulsa World's Emig thinks Castiglione "remains the most valuable member of the rebuilt trinity, which for so long included former Prez Boren & FB HC Stoops, but now counts new Prez Gallogly & FB boss Riley as members. Castiglione still thinks the blueprint in Norman is in good shape, believes one consistent theme is rewarding HCs who are headed in the right direction. (link); Even though athletics is self-sustaining in Norman, there are some questions around future spending flexibility as Gallogly has championed belt-tightening across campus. Castiglione: "In case you haven’t noticed, we’re all in this together. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz does the math, Oklahoma FB HC Riley is getting a $1.5M raise, in addition to the previously scheduled $200K increase that went into effect Feb. 1, as the second-year Sooners leader will now make $4.8M in a new deal that runs through January of 2023. Former Towson AD & multi-stop Senior Assoc. AD Waddell pitched his wares to Central Connecticut State constituents as the first of three finalists to take over the Blue Devils' portfolio. Waddell emphasizes his track record of working with tight budgets, "The one thing I can tell you is that I’m not a rookie coming in here for my first AD job looking to do that type of operation because I’ve been through that before." More: "We’re the only public school in the NEC, a sea of private [schools]. When you’re cutting 35½ scholarships like what is outlined right now by the Athletics Task Force, that is going to hurt, there is no doubt about that. It’s a long process but I think my proven success in navigating those waters and having done that before should give you a great confidence and we can repeat that again." (link)
Maryland will work with Walters, Inc., led by former South Carolina Asst. AD for Sports Medicine, to review protocols in connection to the passing of FB student-athlete McNair. University Chief Communications Officer Lawson: "The review will evaluate relevant policies and protocols, as the safety and well-being of our student-athletes is the highest priority. […] First and foremost the focus is on the well-being of our student-athletes, and this time is for them to grieve. We will continue to provide the resources our student-athletes need, which includes counseling services and access to spiritual leaders, during this difficult time." (link)

Disney has agreed to buy Sky News, a key piece of the Fox family of assets on the block, with plans to pour an extra $130M into the British news outlet for the next 15 years. Overall that amounts to a $2B commitment over the 15, which would be in addition to the sales price. Regulatory hurdles still remain for Fox to take over Sky's equity. (link); We've all read the articles reviewing population movement to the south, which has played a role in densities of high-level prospective student-athletes & given this Wall Street Journal review of Nashville's growth, it seems clear the same situation may be going down in the Music City. Notably, Nashville's population has surged by ~50% in the last 30+ years, but now there's questions about affordability, sustainability, traffic & quality of life. (link)

Notable ESPN MBB analyst Vitale tweeted the following last weekend in connection to Kansas MBB HC Self coaching USA Basketball's U18 team, "I said it once and I will say it again. College head coaches SHOULD NOT be eligible to coach 18/u team. A big advantage in recruiting." However, the Sporting News' DeCourcy runs through a number of recruiting situations in the past couple of years that didn't go the way of the national team HC, plus DeCourcy believes top youth talent should be led by top coaches, no matter where a recruiting process stands. For his measure, Vitale thinks highly-successful DIII or high school HCs could play the same role without the conflict of interest. (link)
Former LSU FB HC Miles as an AD? [insert wide eyes or laughing or shocked or thinking man emojis]. Well, Miles was asked about the possibility during a radio interview, his response, "I think the thing the athletic director needs to say is, 'How can I help you?' As a coach, I would understand those things that would help them most. Recruiting, the consistency of teaching, the way to market your school, your academic strengths and how to recruit best. I would love to help a coaching fraternity and community to be the best." Miles in an AD chair would certainly spice up this beat even more. (link)
Arizona Senior Assoc. AD for Event Management & Facilities Mason gets profiled by UofA beat writer Hansen & praise comes from some key voices. Former Wildcats AD Byrne when the McKale Center was getting revamped, "Suzy’s in control. It is very comforting." Former Zona AD Livengood, who hired Mason in Tucson, "One of her assets is the ability to tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. That alone is an art form. [...] Her people skills and work ethic skills are over the top. I’ve been around a lot of great people during my career, but I’m not sure I’ve ever been around anyone better or more task-oriented than Suzy. The suspension of Stephen F. Austin FB HC Conque is of the "indefinite" variety as the university announces DC Byrd will lead the program on an interim basis. Media reports indicate Lumberjack student-athletes have not been told why Conque has had to step away. Still no more context from the university beyond its initial statement. (link)

The title is quite seductive, "If we build it, will they come? The effect of new athletic facilities on recruiting rankings for power five football and men's basketball programs" & it's from a quartet of Texas Tech & Niagara sports management professors for the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education. The article itself, which costs $42+ is also quite interesting, though is a bit of a slog through the academic prose. There's so much more than just this, but here's a key takeaway, "Using LSDV fixed effects regression models, results found a lack of significant improvement within football and basketball recruiting rankings following the completion of new athletic facilities, but some significance in the two years before the project was completed. Significant control variables also highlighted the effects that coaching changes can have on recruiting." Overall, worth your investment given the importance of the topic. (link)

Funding is already in place, per Canes AD James, but details of the new space are not yet ready to be revealed. Disney's theme parks - a surging unit for the company - are about to ramp up variable & dynamic pricing for park admission, starting with a $299 entry fee for six hours of first exposure to Pixar Pier at Disneyland in Cali this Friday. Per the WSJ article, "Internal projections at Disney show that even after raising prices at roughly double the rate of inflation over the past five years, it could charge much more than it currently does without driving away too many customers."
