Virtually the only reporter out there with a beat on the ECU AD search is 247 Sports' Igoe, who writes for The Wilson Times, "The search for East Carolina’s next athletics director is well underway, though it appears it may linger into next week before an official announcement is made. […] The goal is to have an AD in place by the conclusion of football season, likely to have someone to make an evaluation on the future of the football program. But the Dec. 1 deadline is quickly approaching." Igoe again points to Southern Miss AD Gilbert as a legit candidate, but offers no other names. (link)
A piece of the new lawsuit filed by former Louisville/South Carolina MBB student-athlete Bowen against Adidas includes an alleged $40K payment from Three Stripes to former N.C. State student-athlete Smith that the Bowen camp says shows "a pattern of racketeering activity." Wolfpack AD Yow responds, "As we’ve previously stated, we have gone to great lengths to establish a culture of compliance and accountability at N.C. State. Any individual who is alleged to have broken rules would have done so without our knowledge." Bowen's push still has a long way to go before it ever sees a courtroom. (link)
The Davis Enterprise continues its series with UC Davis Chancellor May on the importance of athletics for the Aggies. In this segment, May says he quickly saw the impact UCD AD Blue was having on campus, "He’s smart, he’s dedicated, he’s well-respected among not just the athletic administration and coaches, but faculty and general administration across the campus, as well as our alums." Categorizes Blue's hire as a "game-changer." May wants notable leaders like Blue to feel like their contributions are valued & that they're "compensated appropriately." Overall, May thinks the Aggies have flourished with the move to DI, believes funding for athletics is headed in the right direction & notes working alongside Blue on key donors. A bit more. (link)
Looks like we'll have to wait until December 7th to learn more from North Texas AD Baker, but details on a substantial facilities overhaul for the Mean Green were teased out by the Denton Record-Chronicle. Notable: "The project will span 20 years and touch all 16 student athletic programs, including a natatorium, indoor tennis facilities, baseball stadium and new arenas for basketball and volleyball. All of the projects ultimately connect to the present Mean Green Village, between Interstate 35W and Bonnie Brae Street." (link)
Per the Courier-Journal, former Louisville MBB HC Pitino has filed a new exhibit in his lawsuit against the university's Athletic Association pointing to an expert from former AD Jurich where he stated it was "absolutely" his understanding Pitino could not be fired for conduct he knew nothing about. As much as $40M hangs in the balance between two parties. (link); Sticking with the theme, the Jurich Group, led by former Cards Senior Assoc. AD for Development Jurich, saw its brand emblazoned on the scorer's table digital boards in the Barclay's Center yesterday during the Pre-season NIT games. The Brooklyn Nets are a partner of the Jurich Group, though some saw it as trolling given UofL's tip with Tennessee. (link
Michigan State has spent upwards of $4M for investigative & consulting work connected to the Nassar saga. Notable global agency Kroll has seen $3.9M from East Lansing with law firm Miller Canfield & consulting firm INCompliance at $177K & $167K, respectively. Kroll has had 17 staffers committed to the MSU engagement & its overall fee includes $314K for one of its employees to serve as Interim Office of Institutional Equity Director for just three months. Added context: "With Kroll's help, MSU's Office of Institutional Equality staff closed out 973, or 83 percent, of the reports last academic year. MSU officials would not say how many violations were found from the 25 completed investigations last academic year, other than that there were at least six findings of violations against students. In 2016-17, there were 44 violations total out of 74 investigations; of those, 26 were against students." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Gonzaga MBB student-athlete Hachimura helped lead the Zags to a Maui Invitational championship yesterday with a victory over top-ranked Duke. The story of how Hachimura, who hails from Japan, ended up in Spokane is a good one as chronicled by The Athletic's Davis. Takeaways: "Given that Hachimura barely knew English, (GU AC) Lloyd suggested he consider spending a postgrad year at an American prep school, but Hachimura wanted to plow forward. He passed the SAT on the fifth try, thanks to his high math score. Hachimura would later joke that if he knew how hard college would be, he would have chosen a different path, but at that point he didn’t know what he didn’t know. All he knew was he was coming to America. [...] It was a long, hard first winter. Besides the usual practices, games, individual workouts and classes, Hachimura attended tutoring sessions at the English Language Center every afternoon. He typically missed two or three practices each week." Zags HC Few notes Hachimura still struggles with slang at times (Few once told Hachimura he rebounded like he was in a pillow fight. Hachimura needed clarity on if that was a good thing.). Lots more. (link)

Texas Tech AD Hocutt on the state of his FB program, "...you are what your record says you are and we're not where we expect to be. [...] Unfortunately, we just seem to continue to have lapses in focus, lack of discipline at certain times. Those mistakes, those penalties continue to affect us and the success we're not experiencing right now. [...] Recent history, we've not been successful in football. Let's say it as it is to the degree we want to be. We've got some improvement that has to be made that is necessary. We'll get to the end of the season and sit down and talk where we are an what adjustments need to be made, have to be made and we'll keep moving forward." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd wonders if there's anyone other than Kansas State HC Snyder who can make a call on his continued leadership of the program. Wildcats AD Taylor recognizes more heat around Snyder at the moment, "Maybe it seems, it feels, like a lot more [criticism] this year for some reason." This as former Wildcat Crews claims some of his teammates were mistreated during their time in Manhattan, "They were getting evicted out of their apartments (due to not getting regularly-scheduled room & board stipends). They would end up staying with a teammate and trying to figure this out. I've heard numerous players say there is a lot collateral damage because … everybody's name is on that lease. If you have two players on that lease and they got evicted, that's messing up credit and everything else for the future." More. (link)
New Alaska Anchorage AD Steward notes momentum around the Nanooks thanks to a revamped Patty Center & a $75K gift from Usibelli Coal Mine. Up next on Steward's plate is getting a new apparel deal done, "We've been in discussions with all three of the big brands. They've all shown considerable interest in being here. That brand will ensure that sales are up, and it's at a reasonable price, and it's everywhere in the community so that people will want to buy." (link)
Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy has an idea of how to eliminate (potentially fake) injuries that slow down fast-paced offenses, "If you’re injured, you can’t come back in until there’s a change of possession. Then you can come back in. People say ‘Well, you know, that’s not fair to that kid. They can do a study on this, if you’re injured, even a mild injury, you’re not coming back in in 6-8 plays. Everybody has to check you. You don’t just come back in. The rule is going to be fair if they just implement it and it will stop people from laying down." (link)
More Personnel: Memphis AD Bowen hires Illinois Assoc. AD for Academic Services Dechausay as the new Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Welfare, Sport Services & Compliance for the Tigers. (link); Missouri WBB HC Pingeton gets a contract extension that could see her remain in Columbia through the 2024-25 season. No money terms released. (link); Southern Illinois Acting AD Kill will hire a new Volleyball HC for the Salukis. (link)
The Las Vegas Review-Journal moves along in its five-parter on UNLV athletics & this entry focuses on the financial gap between the 'Power 5' & everyone else, due in part to media contracts. Long Beach State AD Fee: "The money is just insane. I forget which athletic director was talking about football and how they have a quality control (coach). I mean, they’re just making up stuff. They’re paying him $150,000 a year, and they’re paying that in the SEC and places where it doesn’t cost a lot to live. So how do you compete with that? The Pac-12 schools have a tough time doing it, and we’re not even at that level. So where are we?" Mountain West Commish Thompson does not see a day where there P5 pulls away & creates its own division, points to the simple fact that P5s have to have someone else to play other than themselves, also adds, "Let’s go to the state of Michigan. You’ve got all kind of legislators that graduated from a public institution, at Eastern, Western, Central. It’s not just Michigan and Michigan State. How are you going to pull away and separate now?" Former SEC Commish & BCS-creator Kramer somewhat agrees, "I don’t think a superconference is on the horizon. I really don’t. Now you could see continued change in membership among some conferences, but not just one big conference." (link)
Whomever takes over as the next AD at Idaho State will inherit a positive trend line for FB attendance as the Bengals drew 44,134 for five home games, the highest mark since 2003. Compared to last year's 31,483, it's a sharp jump. Interim ISU AD Thiros points to a competitive product on the field, a favorable schedule & new marketing/sales strategies that resulted in a 71% increase in ticket revenue. Thiros: "We have to keep showing progress. We need to tell the community about the good things that are happening in athletics." (link)
Old Dominion MBB finally made it back to Norfolk after nearly a full day delay trying to exit the U.S. Virgin Islands in conjunction with the Paradise Jam. The Monarchs were hit with flight delays & a shortage of hotel rooms on the island, which resulted in student-athletes sleeping in the airport. Looks like Penn's squad was in a similar situation. ODU play-by-play man Ripley keep his Twitter feed updated, called out American Airlines for the issues. (link)
Amazon-RSN Follow-up: Bloomberg's Soshnick reports the New York Yankees have lined up Red Bird Capital (also backers of On Location Experiences), the Ontario Teachers Pension, Abu Dhabi's investment vehicle, Mubadala, as well as Amazon to buy back control of the YES Network from Disney. (link); More from Axios' Primack, "Thought bubble: Amazon can afford to pay way more than can private equity or other strategics, but Disney is unlikely to favor a bid designed to boost Amazon's streaming video business, at the same time Disney is launching its own streaming video service." (link); Outkick the Coverage's Travis goes long form on why Amazon could be making the play, including thoughts on how it could monetize sports gambling. Lots here. (link)
Also Noticed: Texas AD Del Conte on renewing the FB rivalry with Texas A&M, "I asked them if they wanted to play in 2022 and 2023 when we had an opening. It didn’t fit into their schedule, so we added Alabama. We subsequently picked up Michigan and Ohio State and we just picked up Georgia, so I feel good about our non-conference schedule as we move along the way." (link); Arkansas State FB will play at Washington in 2021 for $1.75M. (link); Check out the lids Nevada will wear as it faces rival UNLV this weekend. (link); Auburn-Duke MBB did a 0.8 on Tuesday night, the top mark on cable for the evening. Arizona-Gonzaga with a 0.4, the CFP Selection Show also did a 0.4. (link); Rhode Island is the latest state in on sports gambling. (link)
