Former Missouri AD Alden will assist UMKC with a four-month "working blueprint for the future" before Chancellor Agrawal digs in on hiring a new AD. Agrawal wants the Roos to compete for WAC championships & notes the need for increased revenue "to help the university meet the fiscal challenges that face us." More Agrawal: "It is imperative that we increase support and awareness of UMKC Athletics." Looks like Alden will serve as Senior Adviser to the Chancellor. (link)
Kansas "tacitly" indicates it has received federal subpoenas in the MBB-FBI case, tells Yahoo it "has public records that are responsive to your request,” and is "cooperating with the government inquiry." KU has pointed to FERPA to deny Yahoo's open records requests, but the trio of Forde, Wetzel & Thamel have lawyers & document experts that say language used by the institution in response "acknowledge the school being subpoenaed by the federal government." (link)
Latest comments from NBA Commish Silver on the one-and-done rule, "My personal view is that we’re ready to make that change. It won’t come immediately, but…when I weighed the pros and cons – (and) given that (former Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice and her (NCAA) commission has recommended to the NBA that those one-and-done players now come directly into the league and, in essence, the college community is saying ‘We do not want those players anymore,’ I mean that sort of tips the scale in my mind that we should be taking a serious look at lowering our age to 18. [...] We’ve had several discussions with both the NCAA and USA Basketball about engaging with them, with players, beginning roughly at 14 years old, and especially with those elite players (who) we know statistically have a high likelihood, when they’re identified at that age, of being top tier players, of coming into the league. So I think the next step will be to sit down with the Players Association." (link); Speaking of the NBPA, Executive Director Roberts has received unanimous approval from the organization's player board on a four-year contract extension. Kansas State to see a sharp $8.6M budget increase for FY19 to $82.1M overall. Projections show $37.9M worth of revenues coming from Big 12 & NCAA sources, plus another $33M connection to donations & ticket sales ($12.4M in FB, $2.9M in hoops). Overall giving in FY18 topped $30.9M, up $2.7M year over year. On the expense side, sports operating & recruiting look to equal $32M with scholarships at $10M. Others: "$6.836 million for fan experience, development, broadcasting, sports information and the ticket office; $5.960 million for debt service; $5.854 million for facilities, maintenance and utilities; $5.022 million for administration; $3.277 million for game management, operations and officials; $2.116 million for game guarantees; $1.515 million for Big 12 membership and overhead fees, and $1.5 million in depreciation." The Wildcats produced a surplus in FY18 for the ninth consecutive year. (link)
Navy's dollars & cents are getting pinched, which AD Gladchuk calls a "course correction." Of note, every sport program's budget was knocked by 15%, plus a portion of all camp monies were mandated back to the athletic department & hoops assistants haven't been replaced as part of staff thinning. The Capital Gazette's Wagner has sources who say the deficit was $5M for the Midshipmen, but Gladchuk frames it as, "Our cash reserves had dwindled to the point we needed to address spending. It’s as simple as that. This is a normal exercise in business responsibility." Gladchuk points to smarter travel decisions as one way to address the situation, plus, "Read my lips: We are not cutting any sports. That is never going to happen on my watch. Bottom line, we don’t need to cut sports. We can continue to operate all 33 varsity programs in a very competitive manner by simply streamlining." More. (link)
More budget talk as the squeeze at UAB is reviewed further by's Goodman. Around $400K has been saved by the elimination of 12 positions, including that of longtime Samford Communications staffer Schrieber, who was headed to work with MBB for the Blazers & learned two days before his start date that there wasn't a spot any longer. UAB AD Ingram notes the differences between one-time facility expenses & long-term operational budget forces, adds, "We're in stable financial shape, and have been, but what has occurred is just a build up of lack in conference revenues. The conference revenues that we had anticipated having when we reinstated football have diminished significantly, and so that really is the issue. And that's the same with the other schools, too." (link)
Still newish Lamar AD Born talks about his vision of internal support for the department, "I want the football coaches to be seen at the volleyball matches and the soccer team to come out to a basketball game. I want the tennis guys to support the cross-country team. We are a small department, because of the level we are at. We don’t have as many staff members as some of the Power Five, so we need to support each other first before we ask anyone else to support us." Born also says the "family atmosphere" he's striving for is reflective of wanting to meet with every prospective student-athlete who visits campus, something he doubts happens at places like Texas & Texas A&M. (link)
More on Auburn turning to Dyehard Fan Supply for its licensing piece. Tigers AD Greene: "Another benefit of this partnership is Dyehard's commitment to the Auburn community. They will use local vendors as much as possible in combination with national vendors and will have a local warehouse ready to supply merchandise for our fans in a timely manner." Dyehard CEO Hough calls the pact a "landmark day," mentions the synergy with another Teall Capital portfolio company, Auburn-based Tailgate Guys, centered around relationships built by Teall Founder & Chairman Sutton. (link)
Former MBB student-athletes on Louisville's since-vacated 2013 National Championship squad & others on teams from 2011 to 2015 that saw wins removed are planning to sue the NCAA. 2013 Final Four Most Outstanding Player Hancock: "There’s been a wrong and we would like it to be righted." Press conference set for today. (link)
A quartet of sports management professors publish for AthleticDirectorU, "Do Facilities Really Matter In Recruiting?" Core questions: "If a school builds a new athletic facility, does its recruiting improve after the facility is constructed? Does it see an improvement after the new facility is under construction?" Their study included 43 MBB programs & 593 seasonal observations, as well as 54 FB programs & 805 seasonal observations. Overall, the study found "little to no impact" on recruiting ranking for the squads involved during or at completion of construction of new facilities, though FB did see a "marginally significant effect" in recruiting rankings the single year before a project was done. Lots more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Davidson MBB HC McKillop penned last week for the Washington Post on why he took his team to Auschwitz, "The volatility of our world right now requires a response informed by both a respect for human dignity and an understanding of what happens in its absence. Life, sports, academics and experience have challenged these young men in myriad ways. They have never been tested like this. […] Our work as coaches transcends the field or court — or the classroom. […] This is an opportunity for the players to coach — first themselves through this experience, then teammates, as they lean on one another, and then throughout their lives. They will depend on one another emotionally. The trip will require teamwork and togetherness of a new order for them. That is where we find our strength. I want them to understand this experience, for life, and to bring it back here, not just as a lesson but to live what they learned. Our world needs leaders who aim to lead and to serve, as our college’s mission declares, guided by humane instincts and creative and disciplined minds. We need advocates for, and defenders of, human dignity." More. (link)

So this seems a bit odd: Air Force may or may not have a new FB DC, but either way Falcons boss Calhoun refuses to reveal anything about the position. When asked about why he was delaying the situation, "I don’t know if it’s necessarily a delay. I’ve yet to see a law or an edict that says that you must (announce a coordinator)." The Gazette has tried to dig for more information using FOIA tactics, but AFA coaches are not technically public employees. (link); On another front, Calhoun repeats his desire to see greater financial investment in "ball sports" in Colorado Springs & negatively infers to focus on the Learfield Directors' Cup standings as taking away other opportunities. Also, on Colorado State's new on-campus FB stadium, "You can go one of two roads as an institution. You can say we want to play all the sports where maybe there’s not a lot of competition and you can build up all these extra points in the Cup, or whatnot." (link)
Interesting read on "embattled" sports psychologist Cain, who is wrapped up in the UNC Wilmington Baseball story that grabbed headlines last month. Cain has worked with a number of brands throughout college athletics, including the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan & Alabama, as well as a roster of professional sports organizations & individual pro athletes. Ole Miss Baseball: "We’ve used Brian Cain over the years as a Peak Performance coach, working with our players on the mental side of the game of baseball. Brian has been nothing but terrific in working with and motivating our players." Cain provides background on the "30-second" introduction of a sex toy as a motivational object to UNCW pitchers, "It was my intention to deliver a message, in a light-hearted way, that the men in the room would connect with and understand the point we were trying to make about carrying yourself with bigger body language and confidence while attacking the strike zone with your pitches vs. pitching passively. Both of which would help them to pitch better." An experienced female performance coach contacted by StarNewsOnline's Riley says, "I’ve never pulled out something like that, but I’ve certainly said some things that made people in the audience go, 'What?' for the purposes of grabbing their attention, so they have something to rally around." Cain indicates he was not contacted by Seahawks HC Scalf afterwards & noted his initial thought when the news started circulating was, "Someone misconstrued something. Someone took something a little a too far and it got caught up in the social media world." Florida State Softball HC Alameda on Cain, "He’s so professional, he’s almost like a big brother to the girls. They can call him at any moment. He gives his cell phone to all of them and they can call him at any moment and he can work them through when they’re struggling." More. (link)
Forbes contributor Baker wonders if the denial of former USC FB HC Sarkisian's lawsuit against the institution will change how schools approach firings for cause. Baker points to Sarkisian & how Louisville is approaching its lawsuit with former MBB HC Pitino as examples on one side, settlements at Florida, with former FB HC McElwain, and Arizona, with former FB HC Rodriguez, as examples on the other side of the table. Baker: "The Sarkisian arbitration may provide a form of precedent for future firings based on coach misconduct. Granted, the term 'precedent' in this context doesn’t apply to specific applications of law, but instead to a factual trend in which NCAA programs programs may decide to stand their ground in court cases (or arbitrations) that challenge decisions to terminate coaches for cause." (link)
Eastern Michigan on the wire, this time with the Office of Civil Rights looking into if the Eagles provided enough opportunities for females compared to those for male student-athletes. EMU brass continue to say the decision to cut four sports will not be reversed, requests a stay in the on-going lawsuits brought by former student-athletes, given the OCR's current involvement in the situation. Alabama AD Byrne on the facility needs for the Crimson Tide: "We have to continue to reinvest in our success and see what our next steps are. Sometimes they're just little minor projects, sometimes they're bigger ones. We don't have a secret pot of gold where all of a sudden you write a check and you build a $200 million facility. We have to have a model that works between fundraising, ticket sales and maybe some bonding to pull this off and make this thing work. That's what we're trying to balance right now." Notably, more space is needed for Football accolade displays outside Bryant-Denny Stadium and Coleman Coliseum is 50 years old. (link)
As UConn leaders engaged on their annual "roadshow," bouncing back from down attendance figures in FB & MBB were front & center. Huskies AD Benedict: "We’re doing a lot of different things. Part of it is ultimately in football it’s been a while since we’ve had success. … It’s the same with (men’s) basketball in a way, where unfortunately the past two seasons were two of the worst in the last 30 years. That’s had an impact." The hire of new MBB HC Hurley has reinvigorated the hoops fanbase, but Benedict also points to building more competitive non-conference schedules as another key to putting butts in seats. Aspire Group COO Fagan notes the importance of group ticket sales & flex season packages, says his group is pushing to reengage the entire state to attend games. (link)
The Athletic's Snyder runs through advantages to a nationwide injury reporting protocol given the introduction of legalized sports gambling in a growing number of states. Snyder: "The NFL’s mandated weekly injury reports and list of Sunday inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff haven’t given one team an edge over the other. Colleges wouldn’t even have to go to such detailed lengths of specifying what the injury is and wouldn’t need to supply multiple injury reports throughout the week. Something as simple as 'Available' and 'Not Available' would be a start. With HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) in place — and colleges needing to protect athletes by not disclosing protected health information that, per HIPPA’s policies, 'poses a significant risk of financial, reputational or other harm to the affected individual' — it would have to be a simplified injury report. Getting players to consent may be the toughest hurdle to clear." (link)
