(Read) Michael Alford: Competitive Culture You Can Measure
Georgia Tech rolls out its new shade of gold, word mark, Adidas swag & more. Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury: "A lot of cases, whether it’s ‘SportsCenter’ or whatever it may be, it’s a fleeting image and especially as we look at extending our footprint from a recruiting standpoint, I think that consistency becomes really important, because you want to make sure that a potential recruit in Seattle, Washington, whether they see the ‘GT’ or a certain gold or look or whatever, that they know who we are." Director of Brand & Ideation Malone: "I think everything kept pointing us back to Tech Tower. That’s certainly a very old-school college-type font, but we also knew we had to make it modern. That’s where you see the blend there." Lots more. (link - neat dedicated microsite, link - article)
"We are in conversation. I very much would like an extension and have every indication that there will be one. I'm going to do this job as long as I can do it and do it the right way and do it with enthusiasm and I hope that's a long, long time." That's Penn State AD Barbour on her next contractual steps in State College as her current deal expires August 31, 2019. Barbour's original deal in 2014 called for $700K in base pay, plus another $200K in possible incentives. (link)
Want to be the next AD at The Citadel? If so, The Post & Courier's Hartsell believes these are the five "urgent matters" for the new boss: 1) Finish renovations to Johnson Hagood Stadium; 2) Make a decision on MBB HC Baucom's future with the Bulldogs; 3) Start moving forward with the facilities master plan; 4) Figure out how to improve a handful of Olympic sports; and, 5) Raise money. Now that there's a new Prez in place, the search for a new AD is expected to start moving, though no firm has been hired yet to assist. The internal search committee includes a cross-section of leaders within the college, plus key members of the Board of Visitors. (link)
New Mexico AD Nunez says he won't discuss the future of any individual sport within the Lobos portfolio because "it's still so early in the process [...] the fact is there's so many questions that have to be answered." What components will go into a decision to potentially cut sports to makeup for the lingering budget gap? Nunez: "What are they doing, positively or negatively, financially. What are they doing from a conference (standpoint), Title IX, what are we doing with donors. All those things are being taken into account." The article delves further into the ramifications of FB being discontinued. (link)
Speaking of cuts, a rally was held yesterday on the Eastern Michigan campus to protest the coming elimination of Wrestling, Men's Swimming, Softball & Women's Tennis. EMU coaches & student-athletes were part of the contingent. Former university regent & local judge Shelton says legal proceedings could be taken, but the university once again indicates the decision is final. Accounting professor Bunsis, who continues to say the Eagles will lose more money with the elimination of programs, spoke directly to student-athletes in attendance, "Our goal here, and your presence here, is meant to try and convince them to reverse their decision. Can we have a conversation about a better way to get to where we want to get to? We want to make sure you can pursue your education and your dream in your sport." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
NBA Commish Silver was on ESPN's new Get Up! morning show yesterday, "Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of school and Bill Gates did too and nobody told them they had to go to school at 18 years old." (link); Silver also pointed to potential changes to the WNBA that could include moving the season to more traditional hoops months instead of the summer. More: "It’s amazing where the league now is from over 20 years ago when it launched, but we still have a marketing problem. We have to figure it out. We have to figure out how to do a better job connecting to young people and get them interested in women’s basketball." (link)

Big Ten Commish Delany & family give back to his alma mater, North Carolina, to the tune of $1M with $750K going to an endowment for the Carolina Covenant, "which helps low-income students graduate from UNC debt-free." The other $250K will be routed to an endowment fund for law students. (link)
Indiana gets a $2M commitment from former FB student-athlete Tallen that will go toward renovations to FB's team space in Memorial Stadium, now to be known as the Terry Tallen Indiana Football Complex. Tallen: "My time at IU, particularly as a student-athlete playing football, truly shaped my life for success, and I’ve dreamed of giving back ever since I first stepped onto this spectacular campus. I’m deeply appreciative to be able to make this gift and place my name on this new state-of-art athletic complex. I am motivated to provide this gift to the greatest University in the world with the intention that it will be inspirational and aspirational for our current and future student-athletes interested in leadership regardless of sport." Tallen is the founder, CEO & chairman of Tallen Capital Partners, a leading retail and mixed-use real estate investment and development firm with offices in San Diego & San Francisco. (link)
Old Dominion brass say they're ready to get moving with Phase I of the $65M overall revamp to SB Ballard Stadium. ODU VP for Administration & Finance DuBois: "Fan comfort and high-quality amenities are the primary focus of this phase. The project will help us create the type of game-day experience fans want and will set us up for future expansions." Rendering images included via the link. (link)
Auburn now has all green lights to proceed with $11M worth of enhancements to Basketball, Baseball & Softball venues. War Eagle AD Greene: "I applaud President (Steven) Leath and the board of trustees for their unwavering commitment to invest in the holistic experience of our student-athletes. The linchpin to sustained success is the constant improvement of our physical footprint, including facility upgrades and new construction. Broadly speaking, our student-athletes deserve to train in world-class facilities and our fans expect a ‘best-in-class’ game day experience. As we raise the bar within our conference and beyond, our journey to create and execute a facilities master plan that excites the Auburn fan base is unequivocally in motion." (link)
Another facility note as Nevada will finally put shovels in the ground for the new grand entrance for Mackey Stadium that was initially supposed to go up this time last year. All indications are work will be complete before the September 1 home-opener against Portland State. UNR AD Knuth: "We’re trying to create a nice entrance from the north. Some 60 percent of our fans park and tailgate in the north side of campus and walk into the stadium there. […] Once you walk into the main gates, there will be a brick plaza area where people will meet and mingle and there will be a little bit of history and some of the background of the donors. It will be a nice way to show off the entrance to the stadium. It’s time for an upgrade." (link)
It's Personnel: Florida International AD Garcia turns to VCU AHC Ballard for his MBB HC opening. (link); Wisconsin MBB HC Gard, WBB HC Tsipis, Men's Hockey boss Granato & Women's Hockey HC Johnson all officially see their contracts extended through 2022-23. (link); N.C. State FB HC Doeren gets his new deal approved that was promised when Tennessee came courting. Pays a base of $3M annually through 2022. (link); South Carolina WBB HC Staley is now inked through 2025, will get $300K put in a trust per year in each of the last five of her deal that will pay out upon completion of the term. So, basically a $1.5M retention bonus. (link); Miami (OH) WBB HC Duffy gets an extra year added, which could keep her in Oxford through 2023-24. (link); Baylor has hired a new Title IX Coordinator in Georgetown (KY) (NAIA) VP for Student Life/Dean of Students/Title IX Coordinator Johnson. (link); Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Poser thinks the executive leadership exits at Nike are a much bigger deal than people understand, “You’ve got a $35 billion-dollar brand that is facing all of these departures that weren’t planned. And while [perhaps] these are talented people — who have been at Nike for years — moving into the [newly vacant] roles, they are now having to do different duties and [work with] different staff. So there’s going to be this huge learning curve at a time when the company really needs to be totally rocking and rolling.” (link)
Updates from Kansas State AD Taylor include further thoughts on the elimination of the student privilege fee in Manhattan. Taylor: "Obviously our enrollment was down this year so student fee dollars were down, so they came to us - we have a great relationship with our students, they're extremely important to us for gameday and atmosphere and all that - it was just time for us. We were going to phase it out anyway a year beyond that, but we said let's do it now and it helps them out. We're able to do that because we have such strong fan support, our ability to raise money through the Ahearn Fund - it's all tied together." Taylor also points to the continued success of the Ahearn Fund as a big reason why the Wildcats could fast track the student fee elimination ahead of schedule. Taylor notes Kansas City & Dallas as possible neutral site FB game locations in the coming years. More. (link)
The McNair trail still didn't get to opening arguments yesterday as the selection of alternate jurors took longer than expected yesterday. Openings now set for Monday. (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner on what weighs in the balance, "But proof of a flawed process … of personal vendettas … of unjust sanctions … of hypocrisy like only the NCAA can deliver — it would all make for a long-awaited victory in Trojanland." (link)
With Marquette MBB moving to the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center for home games next season, students will see an increase to how much seats cost. Though the tickets are technically staying at $99, there is a $2/game facility fee plus sales tax, making the real cost closer to $140. These additional costs used to be picked up by the athletic department. Seating will also be reworked so that more students can sit closer to the court, an idea inspired by the Golden Eagles run in the NIT, when students sat on both sides of the court and "it really created an intimate environment and an environment that Coach and the program really galvanized themselves around" per Asst. AD for Ticket Sales & Strategy Morgan. In all, 17% of the 17,500-seat arena will be reserved for students. (link)
American Assoc. AD for Compliance and Internal Ops Smith on the new recruiting rules: "Early recruiting has been a hot topic for years now. This benefits American specifically because we have such high academic standards. We were never able to recruit early because our admissions office never could say a student was transmissible in ninth grade. We need to see transcripts and test scores. This levels the playing field for us." Smith on the transfer policy proposal: "These transfer policies] are just recommended by the Division I council. The change that we know for sure is happening is that right now, coaches and departments have the ability to restrict students from speaking to other schools." (link)
Former Amazon Studios Head of Strategy Ball tweetstorms on his view of Apple's plans for video. "I think the answer is a more complex version of (B) (convert Apple Music to Apple Media), (C) (shift to subscription software/content) + (D) (drive hardware sales through exclusivity), brought together such that (A)'s (subscription video on demand) inadequacies irrelevant, while making it more distinct and viable in the consumer's mind. Specifically, I think Apple is trying to move to a more encompassing subscription model." (link); Scroll down for a neat chart from Recode that shows you what channels - including a number of sports options - are available on the competing OTT options & at what price points.
