Washington State Prez Schulz indicates Cougar Athletic Fund totals grew year over year by $1M+, points directly to WSU AD Chun as the driving force, "We have an athletic director who’s not just telling people what to do, he’s leading the way. I’m really optimistic about the future on the fundraising side of athletics." Schulz also reassures campus that athletics is also doing its far share of budget cutting, "Some of our faculty and staff have said we don’t see any cuts. They want to know, if everybody’s supposed to cut spending why doesn’t athletics? And the fact is, they do." However, at the same time Schulz mentions "you can only do more with less for so long before it starts eroding quality and things like that." A bit more. (link)
Here's the segment from ESPN College GameDay yesterday on how the journey of notable journalist Maisel, whose son took his own life earlier this year, has intersected with the Hilinski family at Washington State. Valuable watch. Eight minutes. (link); ESPN VP of College Sports Fitting: "I’ve been involved with @CollegeGameDay a long time. The piece that @Ivan_Maisel just told on the show is as courageous and powerful a story as ever told. Continuous prayers go out to the Maisel and Hilinski families. The National Suicide Prevention Line is 1-800-273-8255." (link)
Iowa cuts the ribbon on its upgrades to the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center (GALC). 28K square feet of additional space & "abundant" natural light. Hawkeyes AD Barta: "We have a three-legged stool -- win, graduate, and do it right. This building gives us the opportunity to pursue these columns and the next step in life.  That is earning a degree and getting ready to be a contributor in life." Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services Tovar says some student-athletes have told her they want to live in the GALC, "That's exactly what we were going for with this project." (link)

ESPN's College GameDay will head to Fort Worth for Ohio State at TCU tilt next weekend. (link); Here is an in-depth look at what the U.S. Olympic Committee is doing to strengthen relationships with college student-athletes, as nearly half of the United States' medalists in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics were current or former collegiate-level athletes. Lots here from USOC Dir. of College Partnerships Wilhelmi, including: "I think that the relationship is vital for both sides. Team USA is dependent on colleges and I think Olympic sports at the college level are dependent on the success of our Olympic sports internationally. We both need to keep each other healthy and strong. We need to be vigilant to make sure we stay strong." (link)

Interesting read & interview from Recode with U.S. Asst. Attorney General for Antitrust Delrahim, who is believed to be a key player in the Learfield-IMG College deal review. Most of the conversation pertains to AT&T-Time Warner marriage, but there are more than a few things to note. 1) Born in Iran, undergrad at UCLA, law school at George Washington, then a Master's in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins; 2) Notable quote on vertical & horizontal mergers & acquisitions, "Sometimes these concepts can be complicated, but it’s relatively simple. Do those bargaining powers change with that type of a merger? Some people — including the merging parties — criticized us that it’s the first time we’ve ever enforced. That’s not the case because if people remember, Comcast and NBC in the prior administration, it was settled. It was a case that was actually filed and simultaneously settled with a seven-year consent decree that prevented Comcast from taking certain actions in violation of the antitrust laws. So, the issue wasn’t that it wasn’t. It was just not settled, and those settlements, I’ve given speeches, I’ve written about these, I think is actually not good for the consumer.; and, 3) Specifically in connection to AT&T-Time Warner, "I mean, I’d say probably 80 percent of the merger we found in our model and economic models, would be actually pro-consumer, pro-competitive. […] The area of sports was the area that our economists found and that’s what we did, but you know, the district court judge did not agree. The district court judge, you know, one of our issues on appeal is that there was some fundamental mistakes in logic that applied to that case. It’s laid out in our appellate brief." More. (link)
The current agreements between the SEC, ACC, Belk, Bank of America Stadium and ESPN expire after the 2019 edition of the Belk Bowl, but Charlotte Sports Foundation Executive Director Webb expects the conferences to sign six-year extensions by this winter. Belk is "still considering" their renewal options, while B of A stadium supposedly wants to keep the game. Visitor spending for the 2017 Belk Bowl was $9.3M. (link)
SBNation's Moriarty dives into what exactly happens during a weather delay in college football, a prevalent situation these first few weeks. Some of the concerns: 1) Coaches have a lot more to manage during a delay, 2) Things are even harder for the road team; 3) Feeding 100 players on short notice usually means fast food is the only option; 4) Players have to stay ready should the delay be lifted; and, 5) TV commentators also must stay ready. Moriarty dives into examples from around the country from the past few years and concludes that everyone have a plan ready for such an occurrence. (link)
The Oregonian's Canzano notes that even though Portland State picked up a $400K paycheck from its game against Oregon yesterday, the Vikings still need a stadium to call home, and approximately $50M to make that a reality. Canzano ran into Nike co-founder Knight at the game and afterwards imagined a different scenario for PSU: "I wish Knight had taken a wrong turn in the press box and ended up in Cleary's suite for a few minutes during the blowout victory. Would never happen on accident. He knows the place so well he could navigate it in a power outage. But if he did, maybe they'd talk about how Knight, now with a net worth $35 billion according to Forbes, used to teach accounting classes at Portland State. Or maybe how the 'Swoosh' was designed and born on the campus. I'm not suggesting that Knight and his wife should just hand Portland State a $50 million gift that would fund the construction of an 8,000-seat stadium. I'm just thinking that the sides might want to share ideas because nobody understands how to grow an empire out of the back of trunk quite like 'Shoe Dog.' Portland State is selling football out of a trunk right now." (link)
Executive coaches Kets de Vries and Balazs for the Harvard Business Review: "Understanding Why We Overreact at Work." The article summarizes the concept of transference, "Our brain acts as a sort of pattern matching and pattern generating machine, and when things aren’t already in patterns it tries to make sense of what it sees by fitting it into familiar shapes. Our previous experiences are used as a shortcut for understanding and interpreting new information." Similarly, our brain evaluates current relationships based on past ones, so perhaps your boss is not out to get you, but rather reminds you of a former coach or adult with whom you didn't have a strong relationship and you automatically transfer that resentment. The key is creating an awareness to such transference reactions and to get them under control. (link)

Notre Dame Prez Father Jenkins comments on the tenure of FB HC Kelly, "You know Brian was very successful when he came here. He's a great coach and he's put together a winning, just a great program. I think he'd say as your viewers know, there's been ups and downs but Brian's kept at it and Brian completely embraces what Notre Dame's about. He's not about getting players who are good but can't graduate. He's not about getting players who don't want to be at Notre Dame. He is about embracing Notre Dame and winning in a way that this university can be proud of. And I think he'd say that's been a learning curve for him, how to do that. But I think he's managed that and he and Jack work together well and I am very optimistic about even greater success in the future." On Kelly's 4-8 record in 2016: "I just give him all the credit for admitting 'Look there are some things are broken here and we got to fix them.' He did it and he moved forward in a way that fits Notre Dame in a way that we can be proud of. So much success in life is making mistakes and correcting those mistakes and moving beyond those mistakes. If I'm proud of anything in Brian Kelly's football program, it's that. He's been able to recognize mistakes, correct them and get even better and stronger." (link)
Never one to mince words, Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim offers this on former Cuse 5-star commit Bazley, who opted to forgo college and join the G-League: "I mean, he made a mistake. It doesn't do any good to talk about it. Everybody thinks I'm criticizing him. I'm not. I'm just telling it like it is. He made a mistake. He should own it. He's just not ready. He's just not physical. They're not letting him play in the G League because he'd get killed." Bazley announced last month he was leaving the G League and will train on his own in hopes of getting picked in the next NBA Draft. (link)
Also Noticed: On FB scheduling guarantee games (Oregon, Maryland & Georgia Tech this season), Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger: "Am I comfortable with it?. I’m very uneasy about it. ... We put a lot on the shoulders of our football program." (link); Former Auburn AD Housel missed his first home game for the Tigers in 53 years yesterday as he is recovering from double knee replacement surgery.
