He's the only person to ever lead two different 'Big 5' athletic departments in Philadelphia, but come the end of June he's officially stepping away. Outgoing La Salle boss Bradshaw on his return to the Explorers three years ago, "It was going to be heavy lifting. The president described it to me that way. It wasn’t a retirement job." Interestingly, Bradshaw, who also served as AD at DePaul & Temple, says Owls MBB HC Chaney was the most low-maintenance HC he ever had to deal with, "When I say that, people don’t believe me. He was. But when he was in front of a microphone, he was a terrorist. I told my wife, 'I can miss the game, but I can’t miss the press conference.' La Salle indicates it will launch a national search in short order for Bradshaw's replacement. (link, link)
$219M. That is Texas' reported FY18 operating revenue versus expenses of $206.5M. The latter number is $31M+ more than any other department has spent in the 13 years USA Today has been keeping track. Transfer to the university: $10.8M. Overall FB revenue: $144.5M. Check this out, "Texas’ football revenue alone was more than the total athletics operating revenue reported for fiscal 2017 by all but 12 NCAA Division I public schools." A bit more. (link)
Hancock Whitney Stadium is the new name of South Alabama's coming on-campus FB stadium set to open in 2020. It's a 10-year deal, during which "Hancock Whitney will provide the University of South Alabama with an array of financial and investment services." Jags AD Erdmann: "Hancock Whitney Stadium will propel South Alabama football and all Jaguar athletics programs to a new level of excellence, success and prestige. We have been deliberate and meticulous in planning every aspect of this stadium project, and our students, alumni and fans will be proud to call it home." No specific financial details mentioned in the release. (link)
2018 gross alcohol sales for Purdue FB home games eclipsed the $1M mark at $1.063M. Three night games - Northwestern, Missouri & Ohio State - averaged $187K, while the four day games - Eastern Michigan, Boston College, Iowa & Wisconsin - averaged $125K. 2017's haul was $567K, but with only six home kicks. Comparatively, the Boilermakers did $263K for the entire 2017-18 MBB season. "Net sales" data doesn't appear anywhere in the piece. (link)
TV Landscape: The New York Post reports the Department of Justice may allow Disney to spin out its 22 RSNs into a new company or into a unit with separate control, which could avoid Disney having to fire sell the assets. Key: "A spinout, however, would not guarantee a higher price. It could even jeopardize the RSN business model in that the new majority owner would lack Fox’s clout to ensure cable companies carry the networks on their basic tiers." (link); New Fox won't buy the RSNs, nor will it acquire the Big 12 FB championship game in '19, '21 or '23. CNBC reports New Fox is solely focused on being a "growth company." (link); Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak writes on the Big 12 FB title kicks, thinks Fox will air college basketball in the windows the Big 12 previously played in. Cal AD Knowlton hires Rice Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Development Officer Mann to the same role in Berkeley. Knowlton: "Brian has led fundraising at two high academic institutions (Rice & Dartmouth), and he has significant major-gift experience both in athletics and at the central campus level, which will be critical as we move into our upcoming comprehensive campaign." ACC Senior Assoc. Commish for WBB Finch will retire at the end of the current academic year. League Commish Swofford: "Nora Lynn has successfully served the Atlantic Coast Conference and our member schools with integrity, enthusiasm and energy. Her contributions to college athletics, and specifically women’s basketball, are national in scope. Her career accomplishments are extraordinary and I congratulate her on a truly outstanding career." Finch has been with the ACC since 2008 after 30 years at N.C. State in senior leadership. Cool fact: Finch was the chair of the first ever NCAA WBB Tourney selection committee in 1981, served in the role until 1988. (link)
Former USA Gymnastics senior leader & Florida HC Faehn paid $15K for her four days of work as part of Michigan's program before Wolverines AD Manuel decided to reverse course. Faehn's deal called for monthly pay of $15K through the end of May that could be terminated at any time as long as one month's notice was given. (link)
North Carolina AD Cunningham is going to have a new boss quicker than outgoing Chancellor Folt planned as the university's board decided Folt will exit by the end of the month, not at the end of the semester. BoG chair Smith: "She resigned, we accepted it. We just felt it was better to compress the timeline and then work more toward a healing process." (link); Interim Michigan State Prez Engler, during an interview with The Detroit News late last week, "You’ve got people, they are hanging on and this has been … there are a lot of people who are touched by this, survivors who haven’t been in the spotlight. In some ways, they have been able to deal with this better than the ones who’ve been in the spotlight who are still enjoying that moment at times, you know, the awards and recognition." Conference USA has completed its review of the Rice-UTEP MBB ending that included some questionable calls & timekeeping. While errors were made, the result - a last-second UTEP win - will stand. Commish MacLeod: "We determined the clock did not start on time. All video replay processes will be reviewed to ensure the best possible information is available to our officials on site." Rice AD Karlgaard says his camp is disappointed with the outcome, but "it's time for us to move on. We've got a really exciting basketball team that's very young and rapidly maturing. The Washington Post's Bump writes on Clemson FB's visit to the White House amid a government shutdown as the Tigers were served fast food by President Trump. Pump does the math, says Trump paid nearly $3K for the food. "...we can also determine how many calories were waiting in that room: About 310,000 — excluding sauces and dressing. The spread also made up somewhere around 16,000 grams of fat. In other words, each player could eat about 2,600 calories of food assuming our counts and estimates above are correct. Football players apparently need about 50 calories for every 2.2 pounds each day when undertaking their heaviest workout periods, meaning the spread covered about half the team’s necessary caloric intake for the day of the championship, if not a few weeks after. (link); Here's the table layout & pricing review from WaPo on Clemson's visit. Nike's big unveiling yesterday was indeed a new smart sneaker - 'Nike Adapt' - that will retail for $350, self-tighten, track performance in real time & offer a bevy of feedback to the user. Key, from Bloomberg's Novy-Williams, "Nike is in the midst of a digital transformation. A large part of that is trying to get more of its customers to become members of the NikePlus loyalty program. The company has found members spend three times more than nonmembers when they shop at" (link); Schutt Sports launches a new custom-fit helmet, the F7 UR1. Sports Gambling: The Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel reverses its opinion on the Wire Act that in 2011 it said only applied to sports gambling. Now, "The new opinion now makes the Wire Act applicable to any form of gambling that crosses state lines, including online gambling and online lottery." TBD on the impact of the change. (link); New York Governor Cuomo pushing forward on legalizing sports gambling around the state, "We invested in upstate casinos. Let’s authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos. It’s here, it’s a reality, and it will help generate activity in those casinos." (link); Turner boss Levy says those who have gambled on a particular game are 80 to 90 percent more likely to tune in.
