Florida inks a new 10-year primary apparel partnership with Fanatics in a deal brokered by UF partner IMG College Licensing. New deal kicks off in 2020 as Fanatics will produce fan apparel and Nike will continue to make official team gear for the Gators with other licensees to be managed by IMGCL. Per SBJ's Smith, "It comes with a signing bonus and an annual guarantee, which the school did not disclose, but is believed to be in the same ballpark as Oregon’s $1.5 million signing bonus and $2.15 million annual royalty guarantee." Gators AD Stricklin: "The reach of Fanatics has grown to the point where they not only benefit from our brand, but we can benefit from their brand. The opportunity they give us to understand our customer base, through their analytics, is also really valuable in terms of knowing who and where our fans are." IMGCL EVP & Managing Director Moss: "The unique structure of the deal gives Florida a deeper commitment that a brand like Florida deserves, while keeping the University in control of brand management and marketing decisions that impact its fan base." (link)
New ECU AD Gilbert with his first 'From the Helm' letter to Pirate fans, points to focus on squaring away a sixth home FB game next season due to the Virginia Tech fall out, restructuring ticket prices, bringing back popular events & starting new traditions, as well as putting in place a new Pirate Club renewal program. Gilbert: "I have learned this is a resilient place, and that is in no small part because of you. Pirate Nation is strong, loyal and committed to excellence. Your love for and commitment to ECU is why we will continue to thrive as we move forward." (link)
North Carolina finished FY18 $2.1M in the black on $104.57M in revenues against $102.43M in expenses. It's the first time the Tar Heels have exceeded the nine-digit threshold. "Royalties, licensing, advertisement, and sponsorships" jumped to $12.3M from just $3M in FY17, ticket sales moved to $26.3M from $23.8M, which was helped, in part, by seven FB home games. $16.6M in scholarships, $19M in coaches salaries & benefits. FB surplus was $22.4M, MBB netted $15.4M. (link)
Northern Colorado will undergo a review process as part of the university's push to trim $10M from its budget to correct an existing deficit. Focusing on expenses, as opposed to a conference or division move, looks to be the route forward for athletics. Bears AD Dunn: "The university budget process is not complete so I don’t want to speculate on the outcome." The article includes a bunch of financial data for UNC as a review of where the cuts could come from. University Prez Feinstein: "We won’t know how much savings the divisions need to identify until I finalize the university-wide, cost-saving options." (link)
You're not a part of senior staff, but have the opportunity to present a big new idea to the group. Per CEO coach Nawaz for Harvard Business Review, here are some key tips: 1) "For yours to stand out and be useful to the CEO, it must solve a problem. Begin the presentation with the problem you’ve identified and spend time upfront creating context, surfacing the pain points, and building a sense of urgency around addressing the challenge."; 2) Be sure to thoroughly discuss the ROI of your proposal; 3) Leave enough time for questions & interaction; and, 4) Quadruple-check your numbers, "Once you present an incorrect number, your executives will tend to write off the rest of your data." (link)

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Auburn Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Experience/SWA Holland reflects on her path in college athletics. Holland reviews the importance of writing thank you notes & volunteering as key to getting in front of other influential leaders early in her career. Holland on Temple Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA & former Georgia Tech leader McElroy, "I owe Mary McElroy a lot for believing in me and giving me my first opportunity in athletics administration. However, we still have room to grow in our industry to be more representative of the different populations that we serve. I am thankful for the many opportunities I have been given and I have a responsibility to be an advocate for other minorities and women who desire to work in our field." More. (link)
Missouri WBB returns to South Carolina tonight, but Gamecocks HC Staley says she doesn't expect anything to go down similar to last year's drama, "That’s actually in the back of my mind. I don’t even think about that anymore. I’m a person who’s mastered compartmentalizing." Without providing details, USC AD Tanner indicates he & his team completed a review of game day procedures as required by the SEC, calls the atmosphere inside Colonial Life Arena best in the nation. (link)
Excellent watch on the importance of emotional intelligence with Azusa Pacific (DII) FB HC Santa Cruz. Notable takeaways, "When I was a young leader, I had to learn that I couldn't use the same tools to fix every problem. […] As leaders, our behaviors should be in alignment with our intentions. If you aren't self-aware, your intentions may be misinterpreted. […] Unfortunately as human beings, we take everything personal, and that is were emotional intelligence provides the most benefit. […] It all comes down to the leader...self-awareness on the organizational and individual level wouldn't have worked if I, as the head coach, didn't say that it was critical for our success." (link)
Dallas Morning News reporter Hoyt writes on what he sees as major inadequacies in the National Letter of Intent as six FB HC changes have occurred after the new early singing day. Houston, for one, granted releases to all those who signed under former HC Applewhite, but wanted out after the hire of new HC Holgorsen. Further, NCAA Director of Governance Peal points to 96% of the 1,272 requests being granted last year. Big 12 Commish Bowlsby's view, "The NLI has worked well. Can it be made better? Sure, there are probably ways it can be made better. But it is supposed to be a mutually responsible document and a voluntary document." More. (link)
Nebraska will continue with Pepsi as its "official soft drink" as long as the Board of Regents approves a new deal between the parties which have worked together since 1997. Some key terms: "$1.765 million per year, an increase of about 9 percent from its previous contract, which generated about $1.625 million per year. [...] The terms of the agreement would allow Pepsi to use university trademarks to advertise and sell its beverages. The agreement also includes environmental sustainability requirements, such as recycling bottles and cans and using energy-efficient refrigerated vending machines." (link); Syracuse & INFLCR expand their partnership from just FB to now also include hoops & LAX programs. Interesting read on health challenges for FB offensive linemen as The New York Times' Belson goes deep on the effects of weight gain for NFL players once their playing days are over. Former linemen, compared with other FB players and the general population, have higher rates of hypertension, obesity and sleep apnea, all of which can lead to chronic fatigue, poor diet and death. From 1942 to 2011, lineman gained an average of .75-2 pounds per year, which is twice the average gain for all NFL players. Further, the average weight of offensive linemen went from 249 pounds in the 1970s to 315 pounds in the 2000s. Lots here, including the personal journeys of several who suffered accordingly from their weight battles. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated comprehensive MBB rankings. (link); Mississippi State AD Cohen goes with Auburn AHC Armstrong to lead the Women's Soccer program in Starkville. (link); Evansville will sell 42 acres of land to partially fund and house a new wellness and recreation center. Hughes Hall and sports fields used by UE currently sit on that land. This will, in turn, free up space near the Armory for the soccer programs and potentially a new track and field practice space. (link); Saturday night's MBB game between Duke and Virginia did a 2.6 overnight, which is tied for the highest-rated college basketball game on ESPN since 2014. (link); Did you know: Lead referee in yesterday's controversial Saints-Rams NFC Championship Game Vinovich is also a DI MBB ref? (link); ESPN SVP of Corporate Communications LaPlaca: "Debut UFC Fight Night on ESPN+ - 568,000 new subscribers. Best prelim TV rating since 2013 on ESPN. Hard to imagine a more successful launch." BTIG Analyst Greenfield's counter: "Breakeven for UFC on ESPN+ is 2.5 million subs -- only 2 mm more to go (winking emoji)." (link, link)
