Towson FB HC Ambrose & Ferris State (DII) boss Annese chat with The Athletic's Auerbach on the challenges of a 16-game season to win a national championship at their respective level as debate around the potential for an expanded CFP continues. Ambrose says physicality, not speed, ends up being the difference, also, "I want to say that, the year that we did it, we played the same amount of games as the Baltimore Ravens. They’re professionals. They don’t go to class. They don’t have finals. We played 16, and that’s all through finals. So, there’s a big disconnect. What do you want to do? Do you want the kids to have a great educational experience? Or do you want to figure out who the national champion is?" Annese goes in on the importance of "saving bodies" throughout the season, indicates he took his starting quarterback out at halftime in five games with the longterm goal in mind, doesn't see that happen at the FBS level. Former Youngstown State student-athlete Dellovade on the long season mixed with finals, "It was really hard for some of the guys. But if I could go back and redo it, I would do it the same exact way again." (link)
The IRS & Treasury Department released interim guidance on excise tax regulations with state colleges & universities specifically subject under the proposed amendment. Of note, "The tax code defines a covered employee as 'any employee who is one of an ATEO’s five highest-compensated employees for the current taxable year or who was a covered employee of the ATEO (or any predecessor) for any preceding taxable year beginning after December 31, 2016.' Therefore, once an employee is a covered employee, the person continues to be a covered employee for all subsequent taxable years." Attorney for Miami (FL) MBB student-athlete Hernandez, who was deemed ineligible for the current season due to alleged contact with agency runner Dawkins, "As upset as I am over the unsupported and illogical determination by the @ncaa that Dewan Hernandez is ineligible, we are requesting  that the NCAA reinstate Dewan THIS SEASON. The NCAA can do the right thing here. Even if we disagree on the findings, he has served his punishment." (link)
The FCS title game will continue to experience Frisco & Toyota Stadium through 2025 with the Southland as host. Central Arkansas AD & FCS Committee chair Teague: "The Division I Football Championship game has been warmly embraced and supported by the City of Frisco for nearly a decade, and the committee has consistently received positive feedback from past student-athletes, coaches and fans." (link)

Tulsa AD Gragg moves Director of FB Operations Grooms to Assoc. AD for Internal Operations. Grooms has been with the Golden Hurricane for the last eight years "responsible for the football team's daily operations, practice scheduling and team travel arrangements." Grooms is also a former Tulsa FB student-athlete. (link)
West Virginia AD Lyons goes with Troy's Brown as the next FB HC for the Mountaineers. Six-year deal that ESPN's Rittenberg describes as "the highest-paid new Big 12 coach. Three other Big 12 schools made coaching hires this year: Kansas (Les Miles), Kansas State (Chris Klieman) and Texas Tech (Matt Wells)." (link, link)
Penn State MBB HC Chambers suspended for a game after his shove of Nittany Lions student-athlete Dread during Thursday night's contest against Michigan. Chambers: "I apologized to him. I was just trying to challenge him, just trying to get the best out of him, and hopefully I’ll do it differently next time. No, not hopefully — I will do it a different way next time." (link); "Are you stepping to me right now?" That was Samford MBB HC Padgett to headlining official Hess as the two got into it during a Thursday night tip with East Tennessee State. Padgett, post-game, "If we're out on the street he's running the other way just if he sees me walking by. It's not a threat. But I'm 6-9, maybe 280 right now, not a lot of people step to me. I think it was an unprofessional move." (link - article, link - video)
A bit of backstory on Houston's latest FB HC hire and this explanation for the change from AD Pezman: "It wasn't 8-4; that didn't make a difference. It was the energy and the trajectory of the program. We're down 7,000 season tickets since Herman left. It's not Major's fault, but that's almost $3 million a year, just in tickets. So everybody's like, 'How can you afford this?' I'm like, 'How can I not?'" Newly minted HC Holgorsen and mega booster Fertitta, who played a major part in making the hire possible, have a "great relationship" according to Pezman, who adds: "and that helps, because what it does, at this point, it eliminates the bulls---. This is real, this is happening, and I'm helping make it happen." Prez Khator on Fertitta: "He is enormously valuable. He expands our horizons, and makes us think strategically and take chances and take risks. Schools that have had that person, like T. Boone Pickens [at Oklahoma State]... or Drayton McLane at Baylor, when you have those people, that's when you have a chance to separate yourself from everybody else. I'm not naïve in understanding the significance of that for us." (link)
More HC Notes: Mississippi State Women's Soccer HC Anagnost resigns to pursue another coaching opportunity. AC Rife will serve as interim. (link); Total buyout bill for the FB HC transition at Kansas State looks to be $5M. (link); Washington State Volleyball HC Greeny extended through June of 2024. (link)
Alabama Executive Assoc. AD for External Operations Purinton profiled by the Tallahassee Democrat, as his stints at Florida State & in Tuscaloosa have included being a part of an astounding seven national titles. Purinton believes that while the leadership styles of Crimson Tide boss Saban & Florida State legend Bowden are different, the core for both is effectively communicating with student-athletes. Purinton credits former FSU AD Hart for pushing him to experience the business outside of the Seminoles department as he worked at the Orange Bowl for a single year before landing with Saban, thanks to a recommendation from ESPN analyst Herbstreit. Purinton on working for UA AD Byrne, "I’ve learned a great deal from Greg when it comes to leadership and how important it is to treat people the right way both inside and outside of the organization, because at the end of the day building relationships is the most important thing we do." (link)
Former Colorado Board of Regents member Bosley pens for the Daily Camera on how Buffs athletics benefits the university's overall mission. Bosley: "A university that aspires to excellence in academics should aspire to excellence in all it does, including athletics. Success in each of those endeavors is neither mutually exclusive nor a zero-sum game. […] Regarding fundraising, I know thousands of CU supporters in the Boulder community and have spoken with many donors whose initial interaction with the university, and often their first donation, was through athletics. Several of those people also fund academic endeavors or scholarships. Most have told me that were it not for the engagement though athletics they would not be engaged with the university at all. […] Athletics is also a window into the university and a touch point for many alumni. When football or basketball games are televised, networks provide commercials (public service announcements) that not only shine the spotlight on CU Boulder's academic and research prowess but also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in free advertising." ESPN's Anderson writes on the College Football Playoff National Championship between Alabama & Clemson & the situations of two former starting quarterbacks in the Crimson Tide's Hurts & Tigers' Bryant. Anderson sees Hurts & Bryant as prime examples of a new age in "player empowerment" as Hurts has handled the season impressively & insists his story is far from over, while Bryant will suit up for Missouri next season to further profile his talents. Anderson: "But just as Swinney acted in the best interests of his job and the program in elevating Lawrence, Bryant did the same in protecting his college career and NFL aspirations." (link)
Also Noticed: Per TicketIQ, the cheapest seat in Glendale for Alabama vs. Clemson in 2016 hit a low of $202, this year's matchup looks to have bottomed out around $120-140. Clemmons Arena. Upgrades include new bleachers in black and gold with the Golden Lions logo, a new court with new markings, and new basketball goals that feature the UAPB logo on the supports. (link)
Hogan Assessments Kimberly and Darin Nei team up for HBR: "Don't Try To Be the 'Fun Boss' - and Other Lessons in Ethical Leadership." Here are their suggestions for leaders for building trust with your team and the public: 1) Be humble, not charismatic; 2) Be steady and dependable; it will get you further; 3) Remember that modesty is the best policy; 4) Balance analysis with action; and 5) Be vigilant; vulnerability increases over time. Key point: "The personality characteristics that will get you chosen as a leader are not always the same as the ones that will make you effective in that role." (link)
