New Utah AD Harlan is off & running, indicates starting a new job during the summer in college athletics makes for "a bit more strategy" since the pace is a slower. Harlan says he talks to Deputy AD Brennan around 20 times a day right now as he's trying to wrap his head & hands around the Utes' portfolio. Harlan also believes it's "critical" to build strong partnerships with FB HC Whittingham & MBB boss Krystkowiak. On an expansion of Rice-Eccles Stadium, "I think any big opportunity, big project, whatever it might be, my approach to things is to learn, understand and make a decision. That’s what I plan on doing with that project and other projects that are up ahead." More, including a continued commitment to doing a regular podcast or multimedia series from his desk, "I just kind of feel like people need to hear from the athletic director and what he’s thinking and I think it’s important that folks who invest, buy tickets, want to know what’s going on." (link)
Oklahoma boss Castiglione discusses the hire of new Kansas AD Long, "He has great knowledge, great perspective and exceptional character and integrity to go with it. He was great among our donors when he was here at Oklahoma because he gets to know people well and he has a really good personality. He loves to keep the energy high and for people to have fun at the same they’re working very hard to be successful. He really understands the role of the leader." Castiglione notes that the two friends talked last week & that Long asked him for feedback if an offer was extended. Castiglione doesn't reveal his advice, but also notes, "He has a great deal of experience and has made transitions before. So when he gets there, he will be able to fully focus on the important matters at hand." (link)
"There have always been advantages for Power Five schools, but it feels like they have grown. It’s not those schools’ fault. I’m not bitter or angry about it. Their job is to make their situation the very best it can be, just like my job is to make the situation at North Texas the best it can be." That's UNT AD Baker standing behind his comments after MBB's Selection Sunday after Middle Tennessee was left out of the Big Dance. This Denton Record-Chronicle piece goes on to dig into challenges for 'Group of 5' & mid-major programs within the current power structure, indicates the new TV deals for Conference USA delivered $400K per school, up from $200K the year previous. Baker & Western Kentucky AD Stewart point to things their brands can't do that P5s can, but recent competitive data shows it's not negatively impacting competitive results. C-USA Commish MacLeod with a solid quote, "All of us at this level relish the underdog role. We believe that any given day our teams can beat teams from the top P5 conferences. Are we going to beat them nine out of 10 times? No, we’re not going to be silly like that. But the day we quit believing we can compete, that is when we say, 'OK, what are we doing?'" (link)
SI's McCann digs into the subpoenas received by Maryland as part of MBB-FBI developments. One important note, "To be clear, Maryland denies any wrongdoing. It is likewise worth stressing that being subpoenaed does not imply wrongdoing. As noted above, a subpoena is a request that compels production of documents or witness statements relevant to a case or investigation. Many persons and businesses that have done nothing wrong can be subpoenaed." However, McCann's implications: 1) Maryland clearing itself of wrongdoing doesn’t clear Maryland of wrongdoing; 2) Even schools that fail to land the big recruit can be brought into the investigation and prosecution; 3) Adidas may not be the only apparel company implicated; 4) The potential witness list keeps growing; 5) The possibility of more prominent names being charged keeps rising; 6) The NCAA could suspend players who have been accused of wrongdoing and punish the offending schools; and, 7) Impact on coaches’ employment contracts and the potential of “for cause” firings. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
This seems to be a common theme during college football season, especially around the South, but yesterday's World Cup quarterfinal between England & Sweden coincided with one of the most popular Saturdays for weddings in Britain. USA Today compiled pictures on how wedding participants & guests dealt with the challenge, which included watching on cell phones while sitting in pews, the game score being updated on the hymn board & plenty of projectors & big screens at receptions. (link)

A seventh former Ohio State Wrestling student-athlete speaks up, says former OSU AC & current Ohio Congressman Jordan had to have known about inappropriate behavior by late Buckeyes physician Strauss. "Jordan definitely knew that these things were happening — yes, most definitely. It was there. He knew about it because it was an everyday occurrence. […] We talked about it all the time in the locker room. Everybody joked about it and talked about it all the time." (link); Yahoo's Adelson: "OSU sexual abuse charge makes it clear: silence is a thing of the past." Thesis: "Whether Jordan knew or not, this is a gathering crisis that could involve many hundreds of students at one of the biggest universities in the nation. And the willingness of former athletes to speak out now – especially in light of the scandal at Michigan State – may indicate a sea change in reporting is only starting. […] Part of the motivation for those who have come forward in this case – if not all of the motivation – is for sports facilities on campus to be better and safer for future athletes. That, we can hope, is a goal pursued long after this political maelstrom has subsided." (link)
Texas Tech System Chancellor Duncan believes Texas Tech AD Hocutt is getting more out of the Red Raiders' budget than Texas or Texas A&M gets from theirs. Duncan: "You'll see a good return on our investment." On getting FB over the hump, "It takes time to build a strong program in a league as competitive as the Big 12." Duncan also teases that a trophy is needed for the 2024 reunion of a TTU-Abilene Christian FB matchup, which hasn't happened since 1949. (link)
Nearly a month into his new gig, Idaho State Prez Satterlee continues to point to the importance of a winning athletic department. Satterlee: "I am a firm believer in what a successful athletic program can do for an institution. I’ve seen it happen. ... There is so much passion in this community for the program that I don’t need to help build that. People want the athletics program to succeed. … What we need to make sure is that every one of the constituents out there in the community that wants it to do well feels good about where it’s going, feels good about its direction, they’re proud of it, they like the direction we’re moving and why we’re moving in those directions." Satterlee's background at Boise State saw him heavily involved in athletics, as his resume boasts such claims as "chief negotiator through several rounds of conference realignment," resulting in retaining "specified television broadcast rights that increased revenue and national television exposure." Further, it says he was the donor/booster liaison during conference realignment, "primary drafter and negotiator for high profile head coach employment contracts," and that he "maximized the stadium naming revenue." Believes pitching the right "story" to the State's Board of Regents would better help budget approval requests and that he will never require "money games" on any Bengals schedule. Lots here. (link)
It's Personnel: Oklahoma State MBB HC Boynton says "money is overrated" and enjoys wearing his $6 wedding band, "ragged and worn" belt and a rotation of the "five shirts in my closet," despite his $1.6M annual salary. In his initial salary convo with AD Holder when Boynton was hired as the Pokes leader: "I really don't want to talk about salary. It's not important to me. Whatever you pay me is gonna be more money than I've ever made in my life, and I would do it for much less than whatever you're gonna pay me." (link); New Rutgers Softball HC Butler will earn $100K, better than predecessor Nelson's $92,908 salary last year, and new Gymnastics HC Salim-Beasley will get $95K, up from former HC Levine's 2017 salary of $86,521. Both newbies have contracts that include incentives, as well.  (link)
Missed this earlier in the week & it's a fun one from The Athletic's Feldman on how signals are stolen in college FB. An unnamed AC who has worked in almost every 'Power 5' league on the best signal stealer in the sport (also, of course, unidentified), "The level of espionage in this sport is insane, and he’s the best I’ve ever seen. You go from giving up 12- and 14-yard chunks to plays of negative-2 yards. He’s amazing." How about this, "The Athletic spoke to more than 20 coaches who estimated that 80 percent to 90 percent of college teams do some form of it." It's a super long read & Feldman talks to coaches who note the challenge of keeping things easy for players on the field, but also the risk of giving away signals. The aforementioned unidentified AC works on the defensive side of the ball & runs through obvious indicators from the sidelines that lead to certain plays (like a waving hand in front of a face for a screen pass). In closing from the signal-stealing guru, "The thought of signal stealing is really, really cool, but the practicality of it isn’t all that helpful. It totally is a game within a game, but sometimes you do wonder if the juice is actually worth the squeeze." (link)
Another from The Athletic is the potential impact of kickoff rule changes for the upcoming FB season. Stanford special teams coach Alamar does not expect many fair catches on kickoffs that land inside the 25, "You’ve got to remember it’s the first play of an offensive drive. This is an opportunity for us to score points. It’s also the opportunity for us, after maybe we’ve just given up a touchdown, and you start to feel momentum start to shift. It’s an opportunity for us to go out in one fell swoop, in one play, score a touchdown, make it all even and bring the emotional swing back toward your direction." Maryland HC Durkin also notes the unlikelihood of fair catches due to drops resulting in dead balls from the spot of the mishandle. There's also the possibility of more squib kicks & realization that deep returners simply don't like to fair catch & want to try to change the game with a dynamic return. However, the Ivy League has seen decreased concussions on kickoffs since it moved to a safer model. More. (link)
West Virginia's Heisman campaign for QB Grier is the product of a committee which has been strategizing and working since January on Grier7Heisman.com. Part of the push are Greer's seven character traits, including: The Will to Prepare, The Will to Love, The Will to Compete, The Will to Succeed, The Will to Lead, The Will to Give, and The Will to Finish. Mountaineers Football SID Montoro on the decision to launch the campaign: "Will Grier is the right person at the right time and he’s done the right things. ... It was [HC Holgorsen's] idea from the start. It started with him. He said Will had set himself apart. He’s the best quarterback in college football, the most valuable player." WVU Deputy AD Zinn noted as being instrumental in getting the ball rolling.  (link)
Also Noticed: The Washington Post is considering a one-stop shop for news and info on D.C. pro sports teams in an online subscriber-only model. Awful Announcing pitches this as the paper's attempt at directly competing with The Athletic. (link); ESPN removed the comment section from ESPN.com this week. The rationale from the Worldwide Leader: "Fans currently have more touchpoints than ever to voice their comments. We value their opinions, and feel that we are better able to serve them through our customer care team and our social platforms. In fact, we have and are continuing to create content for social that embraces these conversations and interacts with fans." (link); Remember Groupon? Looks like it's finally on the sales block.
