The DI Committee on Academics will focus its review of the APR on "which student-athletes are included in the rate, transfers (before and after graduation), how the rate is calculated and how penalties are assigned." Overall, the goal is to get a fresh look on how the APR aligns with its focus of overall academic performance & progression toward degree completion. The leadership group says it will adjust APR only if GSR can be improved. Results of the review may be ready next Spring. (link)
North Texas' FB match-up with Southern Miss over the weekend was delayed by a storm in the area & once action got started there weren't too many folks in the stands. Mean Green AD Baker with a subtle nudge to the UNT fanbase, "Very grateful for all @MeanGreenSports fans that made it out today. But to be a championship program we need everyone doing their part. Rain kept too many fans away today. @SethLittrell, our players & coaches are doing their part. Buy your tickets now for 10/27 Homecoming vs Rice." Baker was also active in response to feedback from his tweet, including this to one detractor, "And we appreciate your support. Fans like you deserve to see a team that's 6-1. Last time you had the chance was 1988. Building consistently strong attendance is imperative to the long term future of the program if the goal is to build a team that competes for championships." (link)
Temple AD Kraft & Louisiana boss Maggard review the challenge of navigating their daily schedules to ensure key priorities move forward. Troy Deputy AD for External Operations Jones moderates the ADU conversation as the pair also touch on their approach to delegation, the importance of a solid administrative assistant & more. Kraft: "Everything goes back to communication. Everyone on your staff, specifically your leadership team, needs to be aligned and know what we are doing as a department. […] I tell my staff to attack their responsibility. If you make a mistake, make a mistake at 100 miles per hour." Maggard: "I schedule my priorities versus prioritizing my schedule. Because if I do the latter, a lot of junk will fill up that schedule. […] The Administrative Assistant is of the utmost important. I needed someone who can stay ahead of me." (link)
The Boston Globe has released a new multi-part series of the life of former New England Patriots tight end & former Florida FB student-athlete Hernandez. Part II includes background on Hernandez's time in Gainesville, where he arrived as a 17-year old after graduating high school early. There's all sorts of details on Hernandez's run-ins with the law, drug usage & high-level play on the FB field. Former Gators HC & current Ohio State boss Meyer on Hernandez & what he could have done differently, "I really don’t know. I saw a distressed person when he came to our place, we tried to surround him with really, really quality people and we monitored him very closely and then he went on to an NFL career. So I’m trying to think...That’s a tough question." Lots more. (link)

Impressive response by a student-athlete on the role of a HC. LSU FB student-athlete Moreau in defense of Tigers HC Orgeron's approach, "What is the job of a head coach? You have to think about that. You know, we have incredibly high paid, incredibly tactile coordinators who do an incredible job and create incredible game plans and have us always ready to play. So, what room does that leave for the head coach? He's gotta make sure, every Saturday, that we are ready mentally, physically, emotionally. He has done that every Saturday I've been around here. It might be a different thing, it might be a different wrinkle. He might cut practice by five minutes. He knows what he's doing. People just hear his accent and think, 'Oh, this guy is just all rah-rah, he just gets people pumped up.' But, the lengths he goes to make sure we're ready to play on Saturday, it's astounding." (link)

The AP's Russo: Why schools rush to extend coach contracts. Russo points to Auburn FB HC Malzahn as the current prime example. According to Spencer Fane, 35 FBS HCs & 21 'Power 5' HCs received some sort of amendment to their deal before the end of last year & the beginning of this one. Spencer Fane's Lattinville: "If we have a good coach or we think we do, we're probably better off extending him because if we don't, we have to let him go for whatever reason because he went to greener pastures, well, then we had the one coach that got away and it's going to be expensive for us to pay off all the assistants who otherwise didn't find a job and hire a search firm and hire a new coach and then pay market-grade for that particular coach. I think that that's mistaken. [...] You make the bad hire and you can end up getting fired. If I've got somebody who's good or good enough that's a whole lot better than risking your career on the next hire you make." Some perspective from Oklahoma AD Castiglione, "For some reason, we have some large swings in the marketplace and then it seems like a number of (contracts) start to get adjusted based on a wild swing in the marketplace. Whether or not they might be justified. But there are other forces at work. I don't mean to sound like I'm commenting against anyone but agents are crafty. They know how leverage works. They can manipulate the marketplace at times to the advantage of their clients. They're doing their jobs." More. (link)
Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger makes the first FBS move of the season as he'll replace outgoing FB HC Jinks. Compounded $437K annual base is due to Jinks through the end of his contract which runs another 2.5 years, though it does include mitigation. (link); The Athletic's Vannini takes a look at who may be in the mix for the BGSU spot: Notre Dame ACs Elston & Polian, Michigan AC Warinner, Ohio State OC Wilson, Mount Union (DIII) HC Kehres, Youngstown State's Pelini, others. IDEO Portfolio Director Brown for the HBR: "How One Company Got Employees to Speak Up and Ask for Help." Follows one company, which had grown so quickly they couldn't keep up with call center demand, and how they fixed slipping customer satisfaction scores: 1) Start with Experiments - the company took a month-long "experimentation vacation" where the goal was to change whatever it takes to prevent clients from living by the three-call rule; 2) Don't Wait for Perfect Ideas - one of the most ridiculous ideas ended up becoming the company's best experiment; 3) Iterate Until It's Great; and 4) Make It Safe to Ask for Help. "As a leader, if you want to create an environment where it’s okay to ask for help, how can you show that even you need help from time to time? How can you publicly celebrate people giving and receiving help? If you want people to start asking for help, then they need to see everyone else doing it too." (link)

More from Alabama AD Byrne on bringing back the popular 'Dixieland Delight' tradition to home FB games, "Never did I think ‘Dixieland Delight’ would carry so many of my conversations in my time at Alabama. From the time I got here… I think I probably heard about it the first day. […] At the beginning of the football season, we started having some discussion internally. […] About three or four weeks ago, we started saying, 'Ok I think we can make this happen.'" (link)
In follow-up to the exit of former Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Toliver on the grounds of sexual misconduct claims, UNLV leaders detail how the institution has improved its policies & processes on the important topic. Rebels AD Reed-Francois: "We want our student-athletes and our coaches and our staff to feel empowered to come forward without fear of retaliation. We have 480 student-athletes and 242 staff members; we’re going to have incidents. How we react to those incidents is how we’re going to be defined." Specific programming applications for the university & the athletic department include One Team, LawRoom education sessions, CARE Advocates, Green Dot, Girls on Guard & It's On Us. More. (link)
Western Kentucky MBB drew an average of 5,487 fans to E.A. Diddle Arena last season, a significant increase over the previous year's 3,915 average. By the end of September, the Hilltoppers had surpassed last year's ticket sales numbers and as of Thursday, less than 500 season tickets remain. MBB HC Stansbury to the Bowling Green Rotary Club last week: "Let’s make sure that first game … that there’s not a ticket available nowhere, that people are having to knock on those doors to try to get in that place. That’s the way it’s got to be." With a Hilltopper Lounge area on the upper concourse and new seating areas the building's capacity is up to 7,523. New HD videoboards and an upgrade sound system also await fans inside Diddle this season. Stansbury: "Remember, I said two years ago, 'If you don’t have a ticket, you better get one. There’s going to come a time real soon there won’t be one for sale.' We all know that time is now." (link)
Thirteen organizations at Dartmouth are facing hazing allegations, three of which are athletic programs and under investigation. University spokeswoman Lawrence: "The college is taking these allegations seriously and has retained an external investigator to conduct interviews and engage in a fact-finding process. The information has been shared with the Hanover Police Department per our protocol. Reporting activity that may be harmful or dangerous is the responsibility of every member of our community and we are heartened by those who have come forward. The information gathered through this process will inform the college’s next steps including any interim measures and/or disciplinary processes." No indication on which sports are involved. (link)

(link); From Law 360: "Plaintiffs alleging Baylor University mishandled or ignored sexual assault allegations, including many against its football players, may ask the university more questions about a controversial 2015 internal investigation by Pepper Hamilton..." More behind the paywall. (link); The Athletic's Brown looks at the history of the AP Top-25 midseason polls and how they compare to the end of year standings. Lots of data here, but consider this: "Of the 33 national champions since 1989 (including split champs in 1990, 1991, 1997 and 2003), 27 have been ranked in the top five of the AP poll in mid-October. No team ranked No. 6 or 7 at this point in the season has won a national title in the past 29 seasons, and teams ranked No. 8 (2015 Alabama), No. 9 (2006 Florida), No. 10 (2003 LSU), No. 11 (1990 Georgia Tech), No. 13 (2014 Ohio State) and No. 14 (1990 Colorado) have claimed one title each."
