Maryland: Terps AD Evans penned to the campus community, "I have been clear in the values that should define everything we do, and these reports are not reflective of the culture we seek to build here. I am committed to swiftly examining and addressing any reports brought to our attention. […] Let us not forget Jordan McNair, because he will forever be a part of who we are." (link); The McNair's attorney calls for the dismissal of FB HC Durkin, "No. 1, what he did. No. 2, what he didn't do, and No. 3, the impact on this football program." Sounds like there's also a high likelihood of a civil suit being filed against the university & individuals involved. Also, there's video footage of the workout when McNair became ill, but the family has yet to see it. ESPN has filed an open records request to gain access, as well. (link); Some prospective student-athletes who have committed to play for the Terrapins are reconsidering their pledge. Others, like highly-rated running back Houston, are sticking with UMD, "We are just trying to go in our home state and help rebuild, and now that this is happening this is even more of a reason of why Maryland needs us. So now all this happening, I know a lot of kids won’t want to choose Maryland, but this is even more of a reason why we should go there and why they need us to help rebuild." (link)
Viewpoints: USA Today's Wolken questions closed practices, limited media availability & overall secrecy in college FB, "Over the last several years, coaches have been allowed that leeway to reject the media’s role as a watchdog because they feel — and perhaps rightly so — that it doesn’t benefit them to operate under that kind of scrutiny. And certainly an athletic director, who is technically the boss but might make 20% of the football coach’s salary, is in no position to argue. Nor is there any pressure from the public, which isn’t disposed to cheer on the media generally and has largely dismissed complaints from reporters about access. But it’s become clear that the secrecy with which these overly powerful coaches are allowed to run their programs has become a burden on the sport, the potential safety of players, their own careers and the schools for whom they profess so much loyalty." Wolken is clear to say media access to practices or workouts may not have saved late Maryland student-athlete McNair, but, "Do you think Rick Court, the Maryland strength coach who allegedly threw weights or objects at players as a motivational tactic, would do that if there were eyeballs on him? Do you think coaches generally would engage in the kind of verbal abuse alleged at Maryland if there were reporters around to ask questions?" In closing, "It’s not hard to understand why coaches want the media to stay out of their business. But in some cases, they might merely be preventing questions that desperately need to be asked." (link); Former CBSSports.com headliner Solomon in response to Wolken, "1) While it would be great for media to have more access, I don't think that solves this issue. College athletes would be better served with independent advocates for their rights so they have a voice and know how to use it.; and, 2) Many media in college sports could be more aggressive digging into what's really happening behind the scenes with athletic departments. Reporters worry too much about page views, fan backlash and loss of access. If media shows little interest, why would players come to them?" (link)
Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann updates on the Maryland situation with five key questions. McCann starts by detailing why FB HC Durkin was placed on leave with pay & why it hasn't been labeled a "suspension," "...in the wake of the controversies is clearly designed to minimize opportunities for Durkin to later claim that he was treated unlawfully." McCann believes a settlement is likely if the university decided to part ways with Durkin. Continuing, before the McNair family files a lawsuit, a demand letter would be sent to the UMD General Counsel's office for consideration, but if a lawsuit is eventually filed it would be for wrongful death, where the family would have to argue significant future economic loss was in play beyond a $2M max for pain & suffering. McCann believes it's highly unlikely criminal charges could be filed. More. (link)
North Carolina Central AD Wicker McCree & College of Charleston boss Roberts chat on how to turn a university's marketplace into an asset for athletics for AthleticDirectorU. Wicker McCree: "I was very intentional with my senior staff in making sure we all were engaged in the community by being on local boards and helping with organizations, so now we have access to people from all walks of life in our community. […] When I start seeing young people from our community apply and attend NCCU, it means our efforts at engagement are working." Roberts: "Engaging your local community starts like anything else you do - putting together a plan and telling a compelling story that will resonate with people. […] With a variety of social challenges in society, it isn’t our job as administrators to guide our students in their beliefs one way or another. Our job is to give them a voice, expose them to different thoughts and make sure they are growing academically, athletically, as well as socially." The Athletic's Dochterman believes you'd have to travel to Ames, IA to find the most underrated fan base in the nation & he advises Iowa State opponents to not sleep on the Cyclones this FB season. HC Campbell: "When this job came open, coming here and seeing it and feeling it when our Toledo team came out here, it was like, 'Gosh, the energy in this stadium and this environment — why are these people continuing to come and be involved in this?' It didn’t take long to figure out why." Dochterman also reviews strategic decisions by ISU AD Pollard, including the statewide caravan & a kids club that now boasts 5,000+ members. Pollard: "Our culture has got to match what our constituents’ culture is. People say that person is a good fundraiser or that person is a good marketer, and I say bunk. People give their time and their resources to organizations and cultures that they identify with. It’s not because someone is a smooth talker. That can be really shallow." More. (link)

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Collier pens on what he calls the "importance of 'minor' collegiate sports."  Pittsburgh AD Lyke played softball at Michigan and understood that while her crowd may top out at 5K for a softball game, it wasn't uncommon for a football student-athlete to see 100K fans in the stands for his games. With eight head coaching hires under her belt in 17 months on the job, some in "revenue sports" and others in "non-revenue" ones, Lyke emphasizes the importance of bringing everyone together: "Obviously, one the biggest challenges is building a culture within an athletic department. We don’t all work in the same places. We don’t see everybody every day. ... We wanted to bring all of our student-athletes together because we’re all in this together. You have to be a little intentional on that. ... I think it’s extraordinarily important because diversity is important in life. You bring talent from all over the world. We don’t have a band filled with just trumpets or with clarinets. It takes all kinds to make it go. They all work just as hard as one another and they’re unbelievably committed. There are unbelievable expectations on them and they have to balance their academics and athletics, so they share so much in common." Also, Lyke says she hopes the FB rivalry with Penn State returns "sooner rather than later." (link)
USF FB HC Strong, who is back for his second year with the Bulls: "I don't know the number, but we have to have a good year. We had 11 wins and 10 wins the last two seasons. … No, 7-6 won't work this season. ... What people need to realize is that I'm not here to run out. People think I'm going to run out. Once people see I'm here to run this program, we can build on it. I want to be here. I really am happy to be here." Quips that he is the vet among a handful of schools in the Sunshine State (FSU, UCF, UF), "It hasn't been easy. But we just haven't built that consistency year in and year out, where fans know we're going to be good. It's a tough sell. Even with the media. But if they see something good in the program, they'll jump on board. … It's about gaining a foothold." Believes "there's an effort being made" toward a FB indoor facility and also points out that he told former AD Harlan he wouldn't have made National Champion claims, like their rivals over in Orlando, had the Bulls finished undefeated last year. (link)
Boston U. recorded its best ever Annual Fund year with $2.168M stacked up in FY18. Overall, the Terriers received $3.51M in donations, which also includes $1.33M in capital projects & endowment monies. Also of note, Giving Day alone did $1.293M. BU AD Marrochello: "The collective momentum built from Terrier Nation as we enter the final year of the Campaign for Boston University is nothing short of tremendous and allows us to continue to build upon the experience we offer our student-athletes." (link)
It's Personnel: Washington State AD Chun joined Prez Schulz in helping students on move-in day. (link); FAU with a unique contract incentive, says it will buy FB HC Kiffin's house if he stays for five seasons. His original contract came with a $2M home loan that he does not have to repay should he still be the Owls boss after the 2021 season. Kiffin paid $2.1M for his home last May. (link); Missouri State Prez Smart gets an eight year extension, salary will increase to at least $380K July 1, 2020. More details of deferred comp and retention bonuses included. (link); Colorado State Prez Frank gets a $25K raise and an additional $150K incentive to bring his total comp for this school year to $775K. Continuity on the Clemson FB staff has been one key ingredient to the success of the Tigers under HC Swinney. Co-OC Scott believes it starts at the top, "I’ve seen (Swinney) purposely walk into a staff room and send a coach to watch his daughter’s recital at school, and we’re on Wednesday getting ready to play Florida State. And he said: 'Hey, I’ve got 14 other guys in this room. If they can’t handle it for the next hour, then I’ve hired the wrong guys.' And so that’s a very strong message not just to the coach he’s allowing to leave but to every other coach in that room that he truly does value the families, and I think that’s important." Fellow co-OC Elliott notes how families ride the team bus, says of Swinney, "I think a lot of people that are in positions of authority sometimes are intimidated by talented people beneath them, but he’s not intimidated by anybody. He genuinely wants to see people be the best version of themselves, and he’s a man of faith and he understands that what’s for you is for you, and he just wants to be a good steward of his position and his resources to help people be the best version of themselves, and that’s the bottom line." (link)

Florida Atlantic AD White Q&As with the Palm Beach Post's Elman, highlights that FB season ticket plans that are up by 20%, but wonders what the numbers could be a couple of years from now with continued on-field momentum & off-field relationship-building. Points to 'Paradise Pricing' as a key to understanding what fans want in order to attend a game, believes FB's success has buoyed the overall university brand, plans to bring in an expert to engage Owl student-athletes on appropriate & effective social media use. (link)
West Virginia unveiled its multi-million dollar revamp to the FB team dining room in the Puskar Center Complex and the team's new training room earlier this month. HC Holgorsen calls the dining area "spectacular." New Mountaineer staffer Lile, the director of sports nutrition, organizes and plans the players' meals, "We’re making sure the quality overall is improving. We’re making sure things are in season, things are fresh. It makes things exciting for the players to want to eat." Behind the scenes video included. (link)
Miami (FL) Dir. of Digital Strategy Brogdon uses INFLCR, a Birmingham-bases SAAS startup that gives programs a "platform to store, track and deliver their content assets to the mobile devices of their student-athletes, coaches, alumni and other influencers who can then share this content on their personal social media channels." Just a week into the partnership, 55 different Canes have downloaded and shared 511 content items, generating 68K+ likes on Instagram alone. Brogdon: "We wanted to give our student-athletes a tool to showcase and build their personal brands while also helping grow the Miami Hurricanes brand at the same time. We want our student-athletes to leave Miami with a social brand that showcases who they are, what they’re about and to make sure they’re ready for the real world, no matter their profession once they graduate from The U." The Canes are the company's first ACC client, but INFLCR works with Kentucky, Auburn, Kansas, Purdue, and Troy, as well. (link)
