"If Georgia gets in, that could certainly drive it, it could create another conversation." Yahoo's Thamel got that quote from an unnamed AD last night in connection to if a two-loss Georgia squad ends up being the fourth team in today's College Football Playoff rankings, which could lead to an expansion push. Another: "There’s a possible outcome where three of the five power conferences aren’t in. And that’s a big deal." Thamel wonders if the CFP TV deal with ESPN provides for a look-in at the mid-way point of the 12-year deal, which would be now. Also, would Big Ten Commish Delany & Big 12 boss Bowlsby be game for revamping a systems they helped build? Would the economic value of conference championship games be reduced with an eight-team CFP field? (link)
Delany on Ohio State's candidacy as the fourth team in, "If it's to be, it's to be. If it's not, it's not. I’m not making their case; that's the committee's job. Each year stands on its own basis. ... We'd love to be involved, and if we're not involved, we'll go out and have a great bowl season." OSU HC Meyer: "There should be a lot of merit to winning your conference, which we did. You look at the road wins we had -- at Penn State, at Michigan State, at TCU -- and then obviously the way we played against the fourth-ranked team in America, and the way we played tonight. So I don't know if we're in a position to start making statements about where we belong, but I know they've got a tough decision to make because we're a heck of a football team." (link); Oklahoma's Riley: "We'll let the committee do their job. They've got a lot of good things to look at from this team today. I'm sure they were tuned in watching this. And if they did, I think they saw one of the best teams in the country." (link); Georgia's Smart: "Well, it boils down to one thing: Do you want the four best teams in or not? It's that simple. [Alabama] sat at home last year and got to go in the game, while everybody else is beating each other up, and they had a good football team. Give that coach across the sideline [Alabama's Nick Saban] a vote who he doesn't want to play. He'll start with us. I promise you, [he] don't want to play us. It's not our decision. It's their decision. But you're going to put the four best football teams in." (link)
Washington State Prez Schulz took to Twitter for a quick AMA (ask me anything) of sorts. Commented on the four-part series from The Oregonian's Canzano that took a critical look at the Pac-12 & leadership of Commish Scott. Schulz: "I have read all of the articles - and I am sure most of my colleague Presidents have as well.  As Presidents - we will certainly be discussing many of these issues.  However, just because we don’t tweet about these conversations doesn’t mean we aren’t having them." Schulz also says to "stay tuned in 2019" for potential naming rights news as WSU "continues to work with several different groups." (link)
While in Argentina for the G20 Summit, President Trump & Chinese leader Xi agreed to chill on the tariffs & trade front for now. From the New York Times, "In a significant concession, Mr. Trump will postpone a plan to raise tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent, from 10 percent, on Jan. 1. The Chinese agreed to an unspecified increase in their purchases of American industrial, energy and agricultural products, which Beijing hit with retaliatory tariffs after Mr. Trump targeted everything from steel to consumer electronics." It's That Time of Year: All signs point to Colorado AD George hiring Georgia DC Tucker as the next HC for the Buffs. (link); Looks like Stephen F. Austin AD Ivey will reach back into his administrative history to hire Texas A&M-Commerce (DII) HC Carthel as the new boss for the Jacks. Ivey previously hired Carthel when he was AD at Commerce. (link); Tennessee Interim Prez Boyd tweets that he's not interfering in Tennessee FB's hire of a new offensive coordinator. Yes, really. (link); Ohio State FB HC Meyer's wife spoke to the media after the Buckeyes' win over Northwestern. On her husband's plans to continue leading OSU, "I can't talk about that, because I don't know. I don't know. [...] Yea, well of course I worry about him, because he's always been intense for as long as I've known him. [...] He's been feeling pretty good after getting all the headaches under control and we're feeling really good today. Really good today." (link - video)
Notable bonus earners as a result of yesterday's FB outcomes, as covered by USA Today's Berkowitz. $5K more for Clemson AD Radakovich, $55K for Ohio State AD Smith, $300K for OSU HC Meyer, $425K for Clemson HC Swinney so far, $100K more for Fresno State HC Tedford thanks to a Mountain West championship, Alabama's Saban with $525K on-field so far, Oklahoma's Riley up to $175K, $50K for NC State's Doeren, Virginia Tech's Fuente, and UAB's Clark. More. (link)
North Carolina Women's Soccer HC Dorrance wants to take full advantage of the soon-to-be-complete new soccer/lacrosse stadium in Chapel Hill. Dorrance: "I want to prove to my athletic director and my chancellor that we can be a revenue-neutral sport at North Carolina. In other words, you give me a nice stadium, you give me a marketing budget… because right now, the way the athletic departments work is they’ve got their football team, they’ve got their men’s basketball team, then they dump a fortune into women’s basketball to try to revive that dead horse to make it a revenue producer and it’s failed. ... I challenge all the athletic directors across the country to put the same marketing dollar into their men’s and women’s soccer programs [that] they put into their women’s basketball programs and see the return. Here’s what I will stand by: I will stand by that your men and women’s soccer programs, for the same marketing investment will make more money than your women’s basketball programs." UNC averaged 2,625 fans last season, which ranked 49th in the country. This year's average was 1,006 as the Heels played at Fetzer Field while their new facility was under construction. (link)
Some antenna were raised around sports media yesterday when ESPN College GameDay ran a piece in which Alabama stand-out student-athlete Tagovailoa said his father used a belt to hand out discipline if Tua didn't play well or failed to get necessary grades in school. GameDay analyst Howard: "I saw that his dad was like the Hawaiian version of Joe Jackson, there’s no way Alabama’s going to lose that game, cause out comes that belt!" (link); Interesting exchange between GameDay's Herbstreit & former Tennessee FB student-athlete/NFL star Foster. Herbstreit after the Alabama win, "What an INCREDIBLE example for kids out there that think leaving for greener pastures after seeing 1st sign of adversity is the answer!! Jalen Hurts has shown amazing fortitude all year and has been an AMAZING leader and SUPPORTER of his teammates! And NOW saves his teams dreams!" Foster's response, "don’t shame other kids for recognizing this system is exploiting them and they have a small opportunity to put film out there for the next level. you’re branding business decisions as character flaws." (link)
Notable ESPN expert & top-selling author Miller rapped with @SportsTVRatings & about halfway through the convo Miller provided thoughts on what rights packages the Worldwide Leader/ABC may go after in the near future. Miller believes the exit of longtime CBS boss Moonves will impact its future alignment with sports rights, including the SEC on CBS, which he thinks CBS will lose. Also, Miller says ESPN/ABC will go hard after CBS' NFL package, including the top-spot in all of sports TV, the Sunday late afternoon NFL game slot. (link)
UConn MBB is enjoying a 28.4% increase in home attendance through its first five home games this season, 38,614 vs. last year's 29,284 total. (link); Lots of good photos of Houston's new Fertitta Center that underwent a $60M renovation in recent months. Senior Assoc. AD for Capital Projects Meagher says it feels more like a pro arena now. New seating capacity is 7,100 including 700+ premium seats. (link)
Central Michigan police are investigating former Baseball Strength & Conditioning Coach McLatcher for allegedly stealing adderall pills from student-athletes lockers. Three victims are listed in the report, with incidents from December 2015 to March 2017. Accusations are also swirling that CMU AC/pitching coach Opalewski knew of the accusations, but did nothing before the police became involved. Chips AD Alford: "Once we heard a credible complaint, we immediately contacted the police, cooperated fully with the investigation and placed Mr. McLatcher on leave. It’s something I take very seriously. I care about the treatment of our student athletes." McLatcher's investigation began in May 2018 and he left for Davenport (DII) in August. Davenport relieved McLatcher of his duties in light of the CMU investigation. (link, link)
