MBB-FBI: Duke HC Krzyzewski walks back his use of the word "blip" to describe the recent developments, "I should've said, 'For me, I went to West Point. I was an army officer for five years. I call it a blip on the radar screen of college basketball and that doesn't mean that that blip is not a serious thing. We should look at it real close.' For me, the college basketball scene has been pretty clean. I haven't encountered those things. ... We haven't lost a kid because I feel someone cheated for him. That's my explanation on it. Again, I apologize for shortchanging the answer." Coach K does see a future where name/image/likeness can be monetized by student-athletes. (link); Kentucky HC Calipari at the mention of current & former Wildcat student-athletes being involved, "Our administration and compliance are so thorough, doubly thorough, that I trust everything is fine. They get parents involved, they go to a point where it’s uncomfortable to me. You shouldn’t be having to do this. But then you say, I’m glad you guys do that." (link); The father of UK student-athlete Hagans, who was within the business plan created by agent runner Dawkins, "I don’t understand why everybody is trying to make something of it. Clearly, in the article, (Dawkins) said he planned (to pay players). ‘Planned’ means that’s what he wanted to do ...We don’t know this guy. We never met this fool a day in our life." Dawkins' attorney on his client taking a plea deal, "That was not something that Christian was interested in doing. He's going to deal with it like a man should. He's not going to rat out other folks. He's not going to cooperate. He has some integrity ... He's not going to be a snitch." (link); Kansas Board of Regents Vice Chair Bangerter says he's been in contact with KU Chancellor Girod & still has a bunch of questions surrounding the Jayhawks' dealings with Dawkins, et al. ESPN MBB analyst Bilas holds one of the most unique positions in college basketball, that of consistent NCAA critic & top-notch on-air talent. What would Bilas do if he were the Commish of MBB? 1) Change the mission statement to match the reality ("College basketball is a business, and it is a great, worthwhile business with positive outcomes in a number of areas. Let's admit that and treat it as the business that it is. And let's treat the players as an integral part of that business."); 2) End amateurism; 3) Allow players to come back at will; 4) Reduce the size of DI; 5) Hire officials as salaried employees; 6) Make some on-court rule changes (24-second clock, extend 3-point line, widen lane, move to quarters); and, 7) Unchain the coaches. Bottom line: "College basketball is great, mostly because basketball is great. We need to stop all of our made-up scandals that are not really scandals at all. They are just business." More. (link)
ECU Baseball HC Godwin, who is on the internal committee to help pick a new AD in Greenville, says he's not particularly worried about ties to the institution or Eastern North Carolina, instead wants the best possible fundraiser & leader. Additionally, "...somebody that can stand up, tell people why they made a tough decision and be transparent with it, and own a room. […] We need to hire the best person and I'm pretty adamant about it." (link)
West Coast Commish Nevarez Q&As with the Sporting News, wants to focus on elevating the league's story to generate more national appeal. To that end, "We are actually working on a strategic branding plan to really articulate the core values behind our brand. We have a lot of synergy and culture, it’s just drilling down and figuring out the DNA of our brand, then articulating that, then strategizing how we tell that story. And I don’t know that we’ve put our shoulder into that effort yet with regard to the league’s brand." Notes the need for FB or MBB oversight for women to get their next opportunity, one she had at Oklahoma under Sooners boss Castiglione. Mentions when she went to Norman some people asked about then-OU senior leader & current Texas A&M Deputy AD Rempe, "...everyone's like, 'What happened to Stephanie Rempe?' I was like, 'Hold your horses, she’s still there. Joe’s got two women on staff.' You know, gasp. (Laughing)." (link)
The ball is tipped & here we are, in Bret Just's world. Well, at least sorta, as USA Today's Wolken profiles the notable CAA MBB HC agent who reps the likes of UConn WBB boss Auriemma, USC MBB's Enfield, Nebraska's Miles, Texas Tech's Beard, Missouri State's Ford & a number of other college & NBA leaders. Wolken polled 100 coaches last summer on who the most important people were in MBB & Just finished fourth behind Big Ten Commish Delany, Duke's Coach K & Kentucky boss Calipari. Parker Executive Search's namesake VP & Managing Director of Sports on Just, "There’s only four or five agents in the college space that have the majority of the coaches. If I have a search, he’s one you call. He’s got a diverse group of coaches and he’s done a good job of building relationships with search firms and athletics directors, but also general managers in the (NBA). That takes of a lot of relationship skills to navigate both the college and professional ranks." Washington AD Cohen says dealing with Just never feels transactional, tells his clients, "You want me to have 30 coaches and act like I have three," recounts the tipping point of his portfolio when Enfield moved from Florida Gulf Coast to Los Angeles. Lots more. (link)
ESPN's Murphy writes on Colorado's Buffs4Life Foundation, run by former CU FB student-athlete Tufts. There's a ton here. Core: "To keep tabs on all those people, the Buffs4Life board recruited and selected three "captains" from each half-decade of graduating classes. That trio's job is to check in on their old teammates and to provide a point of contact if anyone in their group sees warning signs among their peers. They monitor four main pillars where symptoms of a bigger problem might appear: physical health, substance abuse, career issues and family issues. The captains gather every few months for training sessions with mental health professionals designed to help them learn how to spot red flags, respond constructively when they do, and arm them with a toolbox of resources to which they can direct someone in need." (link); WSJ's Bachman also dives into the growth of sport psychologists & mental health professionals around college athletic departments. The SEC announces alignment with Evolution Media & CAA as its exclusive media advisors with the SEC on CBS package top of mind for many around sports media. Evolution has a laundry list of big brand sports customers in its portfolio.'s Dodd notes the duo taking over where late "legendary" consultant Gerber left off. The Big Lead's Glasspiegel expects SEC on CBS to get at least a 4x increase to its current deal worth $55M annually, also adds, "I'm told CAA will also be advising the NHL on their next rights negotiations (which is with NBC for an average of $200M a year through the 2020/2021 season)." (link, linklink)

Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim has put tougher a tougher-than-normal non-conference slate for his Orange this season, says he's come around to upgrading his opponents after making the NCAA tourney from the bubble with notable non-conference wins over mid-majors. In addition to Oregon, Iowa & UConn, "Northeastern is picked to win their league. Old Dominion’s picked to be in the top of their league. Buffalo is picked to win their league. Arkansas State is good, St. Bonaventure is good. [...] Those five games, they’re as good as playing a lower team from a so-called Power 5 conference." (link); The Pac-12's fourth MBB tip from China goes down tonight (in the States, Saturday in China) as Cal faces Yale in Shanghai. Golden Bears AD Knowlton, along with NBA TMBO Prez & Chief Innovation Officer Brooks, alongside a notable list of others, took part in the China-U.S. University Sports & Education Summit. (link)

The Kansas FB HC search has already entered the flight-watching stage as Jayhawks boss Long & Deputy AD for Administration Lester were seen getting off a charter that originated in Phoenix, made a stop in Dallas & was supposed to touch down in Baton Rouge. Per the article, "those with knowledge of the flight itinerary" say things changed & there was no Dallas to Baton Rouge leg. Speculation centers around former LSU skipper Miles. (link, link)
New Minnesota WBB HC Whalen will coach her first regular season game tonight as New Hampshire visits Williams Arena. Whalen is already integrating some of the biggest names in the sport to her program as Minnesota Lynx HC Reeve spoke to the Golden Gophers last week & Whalen's Lynx teammates Fowles & Augustus (both former LSU stars) will be in attendance this evening. Whalen says Reeve has been an important sounding board, joking that early on she text Reeve, "Coach, did you drink a lot?" Whalen has also started working out again, this time as a stress reliever, though she had to assure Gophs AD Coyle she wasn't planning to hit the hardwood as a player anytime soon. Despite the demands of being an HC, Reeve thinks Whalen "is going to be exceptional at it." (link)
The story of UAB's FB success really can't be talked about enough. Blazers HC Clark notes how in late 2014, with the program basically disbanded, all he was worried about was finding spots for his student-athletes & making sure his staff could get new jobs. Clark points to using the subsequent down year to develop his players psychically, rehab injuries & get JUCO kids to buy into a team mentality. Moving forward, Clark points to Boise State as the model for UAB, "This should be a national team." Houston & Memphis are also mentioned as others who fit the aspirational category. Overall, "It was one of those things that if you had known it was that hard, you might not have done it." (link)
Seemingly half-joking, half-serious, Miami (OH) FB HC Martin lobbies for a trophy in the rivalry between his Redhawks & Ohio, a matchup Martin won on Wednesday night, "I was waiting for the trophy to come storming out, there’s no trophy for the thing? We talk about this rivalry, I just assumed there was a trophy! We hadn’t won, in, you know, 50 years! How can it be such a rivalry if there’s no damn trophy! I’ll pitch in, I think! It’s a pretty big deal! I’m like ‘Where’s the dang trophy?’ I guess it’s not that big of a deal if no one can afford a trophy for the rivalry. It just shows how cheap the schools are in this league." (link)
The Undefeated's Bembry compares the end for former UConn MBB HC Ollie to other HCs around the sport & concludes, "Let’s be real: When it comes to big-time college sports, winning is everything. And Ollie, UConn and the NCAA would not likely be in this place had the Huskies not finished 14-18 last season, putting together back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1986-87 (Calhoun’s first season as head coach in Storrs)." Bembry goes on to line up Ollie's treatment to that of his predecessor, Jim Calhoun, even points to differences in the AD chair on why things in Storrs may have been handled to date, "Perhaps the discrepancy in the treatment between Calhoun and Ollie lies with the difference in leadership at Connecticut. (Warde Manuel was the athletic director when Calhoun resigned in 2012 and was replaced in 2016 by David Benedict, who signed Ollie to a contract extension in 2017.)" More. (link)

All three will visit campus next week for open forums and closed interviews. (link)
Eastern Washington Women's Soccer student-athlete Valdivieso with an amazing assist during the Eagles flight from Spokane to Denver last week for the Big Sky tourney. A fellow passenger near Valdivieso was pale, unresponsive & didn't have a pulse, leading her to administer CPR & bring the passenger back to life. Valdivieso: "I knew I had some sort of impact, and I’m proud of myself for stepping up." Understatement of the day. (link)

Boston College AD Jarmond on hosting ESPN College GameDay tomorrow, "It's special. Every kid wants to compete at the highest level. And I talked to our recruiting coordinator about it. When (prospects) can see you nationally in the spotlight -- everybody watches ESPN -- they envision themselves, 'I can be that.' So it's huge. Because you can see yourself in the moment. [...] I wrote down two pages of notes. We have to make sure our students can make signs. Buy the materials, let them make signs in between classes. [...] This is the biggest game in 10 years and arguably before that." More. (link, link)
The Southland FB title race is in a bit of tricky spot as a number of programs could tie at the top with two losses. However, since it's an 11-team league, one member only plays eight conference games, while the rest play nine. Incarnate Word has the eight this season & the conference has determined that if the Cardinals end at 6-2, which they can with a win over Central Arkansas this weekend, the mark will count the same as others who may be at 7-2. Stephen F. Austin AD Ivey: "A lot of factors go into this situation. Wish it were as simple as a yes/no answer." Further, if UIW makes the FCS Playoffs, its December 1 date at Iowa State would likely have to be cancelled. (link)
Brown gets a $3M gift from alum Given to endow the Men's Hockey HC chair, and for a renovation for Meehan Auditorium with the aim of getting the Bears back to the top of the ECAC. Baylor officials commissioned a 2014 consultant study in response of a growing number of sexual assault complaints on campus. The resulting Margolis Healy, Title IX Review and Clery Act Compliance Assessment was a 115-page report that "reveals years of failures by University officials to fully adopt federal laws and guidelines governing student safety" according to KWTX in Waco. The MH report had 51 recommendations, which Baylor officials say were acted upon immediately, including the addition of 11 commissioned officers and two dispatchers to the BU Police Department as well as the hiring of a victim advocate to assist complainants throughout the investigative process. Waco attorney Dunnam, who represents 15 current or former alleged victims of sexual harassment or assault at Baylor says that school officials, not just the athletic department ones, deserve most of the blame for the failure to protect female students. Lots here. (link)
Facilities: UC San Diego has a renovated RIMAC Arena on campus, complete with a 50-foot-wide video board. The renovations ran $5M. His mother, Staci, revealed that on November 6 he ate his first meal by mouth since the incident and he is being moved to a brain injury rehab facility. (link); The Pac-12 extends with Audi and Dr Pepper for continued Championship Game sponsorships and adds Jack in the Box for the FB title game and the 2019 MBB Tourney.
