In case you missed them, here is Saturday's D1.ticker & here's Sunday's.
UCF AD White submits a letter to ESPN College GameDay countering comments on the show from Saturday concerning the Knights' 20-game winning streak & challenge of gaining CFP access. White: "College Football has become a subjective popularity contest. The Knights represent all of the teams who – for reasons of history, geography or politics — are left out of the club. These factors will not define our bright future. Our student-athletes don't want anything given to them ... they just want a chance. No one likes having their accomplishments disrespected. UCF fans are knowledgeable and passionate, and I applaud them for using social media to have their voices heard." White closes by noting how the AAC is a partner of ESPN, asks if the Worldwide Leader will help fix a broken model. (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott met with the media during halftime of Saturday's Washington State-Oregon showdown, says of Cougars HC Leach's sharply-worded texts to league officials, "If there are ever accusations about integrity or personnel, we immediately go to the leadership of our university’s athletic department and ask if they’d like to have an inquiry or review and Washington State declined to do so." Scott also continues to say the instant replay issues are an isolated incident with the results of a full review coming in the next few weeks. (link, link)
West Virginia MBB HC Huggins doesn't believe the new NBA G League "select contracts" will impact programs like his. Huggins: "It could hurt Kentucky. It could hurt Kentucky and Duke. ... The majority of us don't do that anyway. I've had a few one-and-done's during however many years I've been doing this." More: "The NBA can’t make a change right now because of bylaws to let guys come out of high school, so this is the next best thing. There was a big movement that guys should be allowed to come out of high school and go right to the NBA if they could. If you look at the numbers, though, you look at the people from the schools that have had enough one-and-done's to really have that decent sample, there’s a whole bunch of guys that don’t make it now. ... We can sit here and argue is that good for them or should they have to stay in school? I don’t know. It depends on the individual. Some of them it’s good for, some of them it’s not. But that’s life, right?" (link)
George Mason AD Edwards & MBB HC Paulsen sit for a chat with AthleticDirectorU on how the two high-profile Patriots leaders communicate & work together on values & organizational culture. Of note from Edwards, "A great organization gets things from thought to execution with a high degree of attention to detail." As for Paulsen, "You have to stand on the shoulders of giants if you want to build a powerhouse, but you have to be comfortable in your own skin too. […] When your players start to enforce your culture, great things begin to happen." More. (link)

Airlines might be squeezing space these days to fit more seats on a plane, but most are upgrading their snack game to the delight of customers. Niche snack brands are winning, with the likes of Lorissa's Kitchen, Pretzel Perfection & Byrd's Cookie Kitchen all seeing purchases by major air players. Delta Director of Onboard Services Strategic Planning Berry: "We wanted to be on trend with our snack choices, and we think that smaller, specialty brands are definitely on trend." Byrd Prez Repella: "Our relationship with United has been a game changer for us. I get more than 20 calls and 40 emails a day from customers who want to buy our cookies." (link)

Former Kansas AD Zenger is helping coach his son's high school football team this season. Zenger: "This has been five of the most special months of my life. ...  I had hoped when I was 65 to retire somewhere and help coach the local high school team, but I'm doing that at age 52. ... When you get to do your favorite thing on earth, coaching football, with your son, I can't put words to that, really. " Free State is 8-0 on the season. (link)
West Virginia Senior Assoc. AD/Executive Director of the Mountaineer Athletic Club Murray notes how some donors reacted after FB's loss at Iowa State a week ago, "They're frustrated. They didn't want to lose, just like the team didn't want to lose, the kids didn't want to lose and the coaches didn't want to lose. They wonder why things happen certain ways. You get a couple frustrated calls and stuff like that, but they want to continue to support West Virginia football. They don't say, 'Hey, I'm never giving you another dollar. I didn't invest in this.' It's more of, 'I want to talk to somebody about why this happened' -- even though I have no idea. But they want somebody to talk to, and they're great about it." The gridiron result didn't impact the MAC's outreach efforts this past week and Murray also indicates the master facilities plan gives all fundraisers the same initiative to push. (link)
George Washington unveiled its first on-site baseball clubhouse at Tucker Field over the weekend. The $3.5M Fassnacht Clubhouse and Training Facility is 6,200 square feet and includes coaches' offices, a players lounge, locker room, and an indoor turf training space. (link); Here is a sneak peak of the new locker room for Ole Miss baseball, part of a facility that includes a large weight room and indoor practice areas. (link)
TV Ratings: Michigan-Michigan State on Fox did a 3.7, Purdue-Ohio State on ABC with a 4.2, LSU-Mississippi State on ESPN with a 1.7. (link); ESPN College GameDay from Pullman recorded a 1.4, up 17% from Week 8 last season from State College. (link); The Athletic's Walters argues Alabama FB's dominance makes for bad TV. Walters: "If the media is rat poison for Alabama football, as Saban claims, then Alabama is rat poison to college football. Maybe we will be proved wrong in two weeks in Baton Rouge (note: we won’t be), but the Crimson Tide’s utter indomitability has made the entire season one slow and inexorable slog toward January." (link)
Texas professor and notable author Markman for HBR: "How to Stop Delegating and Start Teaching." "As a manager, a central part of your job is to train and develop people. This includes people who want to move into leadership roles, similar to yours, one day. When you take on the mindset of a trainer -- instead of a manager delegating work -- you will naturally look for ways to give a little more responsibility to the people who work for you." Markman notes how your own productive will slow down with a more focused training routine, but the outcomes are key, "You will have created a team of trusted associates who can step in and help when you are overwhelmed or out of the office. And, as an added bonus, you have also groomed your successors. After all, as the old saying goes, if you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted." (link)

As New Mexico pushes for more state support, lawmakers who will have a say indicate they are going to dig deep on budget numbers. Representative Lundstrom, "The questions I am going to ask are about compensation packages. I want to know what benefits these coaches and the athletic director have. I want to know how much over their base pay they are receiving of taxpayers' dollars. […] When you hear the Athletics Director talk consistently about 'this is about my student-athletes and I want to help my athletes,' but at the end of the day, you see compensation packages that are unreasonable and questionable." Lobos AD Nunez defends incentives for his HCs, "I am a supporter of incentives because to me, it incentivizes people to do something. If they achieve it, some great things are happening." (link)
LSU AD Alleva is reportedly pushing the SEC to reconsider a targeting call on FB student-athlete White from the closing moments of the Tigers win over Mississippi State on Saturday night that would keep White out of the first half of the Alabama game in two weeks. According to's Miller, "Alleva has been on the phones with SEC officials since the targeting call was made on Devin White. There's no appeal process in place, but he's still working it. The SEC is reviewing the call, but with no formal appeal process in place there isn't a clear path forward." (link)
A new book due out tomorrow titled, "University of Nike: How Corporate Cash Bought American Higher Education," takes a look at Nike's historical role at the University of Oregon. In a review of the read, "The apparel giant's top spokesman, Michael Jordan, had abruptly retired from professional basketball ahead of the 1993–'94 season, and it was unclear how deeply Nike might feel the loss of its most iconic athlete. […] Access to college football programs would be a boon for Nike's research-and-development department, while access to the student body would offer affordable, unprecedented advertising possibilities." There's also a passage on Nike boss Knight's unwillingness to again donate to a cancer research cause championed by former UO Prez Frohnmayer after he allowed the university to be a part of the Workers Rights Consortium that called for better working conditions for overseas workers. Lots more. (link); Frohnmayer's wife says assertions that Knight withheld any donation is "patently false." More. (link)
Also Noticed: INFLCR adds Kansas to its list of clients. The Jayhawks are the first program from the Big 12 to use the software. (link); In a group of notes on updates at Ohio, it looks like an executive staff member in athletics will now have a dotted line reporting structure to the university General Counsel, but I can't quite gather from the article if it's Senior Assoc. AD/CFO Franchak or Senior Assoc. AD for NCAA Eligibility & Student-Athlete Success Duffy. (link); Former Colorado FB AC Tumpkin, who was charged with five counts of felony second-degree assault and three counts of misdemeanor third-degree assault, has been offered a plea deal by prosecutors, despite objections by his ex-girlfriend, who is named as the victim in the case.
