WDAZ's Kolpack believes "all vital signs" are pointing to Augustana (DII) joining the Summit League & the support of Sanford Health CEO Krabbenhoft is a key part of the story. Kolpack: "Kelby Krabbenhoft appears to be pushing for Augie to make a Division I move, it doesn't take a genius to figure out it's probably going to happen." Kolpack goes on to say the hire of new Vikings AD Morton from Michigan State is reminiscent of when North Dakota State brought in former AD & current Kansas State boss Taylor. Kolpack's view also centers around the need for a travel partner for the Bison as Augie MBB HC Billeter notes, "I like that they're talking that way. What I mean by that is you're always trying to grow, always trying to improve or whatever words you want to use in regards to that. I think we're a good product that is constantly trying to get bigger." (link)
Attorneys for former Auburn MBB AC Person continue to argue his alleged missteps don't equal a federal crime as they push for a case dismissal. "Straining to charge the alleged NCAA rules violation as a federal crime, without any conceivable federal interest at stake in doing so, the government has concocted unworkable legal theories that lack any basis in the statutory language and exceed the constraints of due process. The federal government has no business policing the NCAA rules, and the superseding indictment should be dismissed." Also, "It is no exaggeration to say that the government's new wire fraud theory (like its original theory) would criminalize nearly all undisclosed NCAA rule violations because every college coach and staff member routinely certifies compliance with the NCAA rules. ... One need not be a careful student of college basketball to appreciate the number of coaches or athletic department employees who have failed to disclose known violations of the NCAA rules but who have not been prosecuted for federal wire fraud." The Salt Lake City Tribune's Drew writes on the juxtaposition at BYU where a majority of Cougar fans want to stay Independent, but national pundits believe the best route is to rejoin a league. What does AD Holmoe think? Grabbing from previous comments, "When the broadcast companies look to renew the broadcast rights, at that point in time there will maybe be changes in the landscape of competition. [...] It is the same answer that I have always said: We are not looking right now to get into [another] league." Teeples Consulting's namesake points out a return to the Mountain West could result in a sharp decrease in FB revenues, "I understand why people want to relive the old glory days, but Utah and TCU are gone and the Mountain West is not the same anymore and does not generate enough revenue to be financially viable long term without heavy subsidies from student fees and state governments. Is that the company you want to keep?" (link)
Forbes' Dosh points to revenue increases for Alabama FB as a prime reason why HC Saban is more than deserving of another pay bump. Since FY08, ticket revenues are up 32.5%, contributions are upby 10.6%, rights/licensing fees by 208% & overall there's been a 40.8% revenue surge. Possibly even more important is the enrollment uptick in Tuscaloosa, "In 2007, the year Saban arrived, Alabama's enrollment was 25,580. By 2017, that number had increased to 38,563. And in 2014, out-of-state students outnumbered in-state students for the first time in school history - a rarity for a state university. By 2017, only 41% of the freshman class came from Alabama." (link)

NCAA WBB Committee member & Middle Tennessee Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Turnham is in Minneapolis during the WNBA's All-Star weekend checking out the Target Center & the rest of the city as a potential host location for a future Final Four (2021 through 2024 will be announced in October). Turnham: "This city is certainly appealing to us. […] You guys have a great tradition here, especially with the WNBA program. So we felt like we knew that already. Now we get to see it live and in person." (link); Check out the WNBA's All-Star Game Intro narrated by Tennis great King. Moving. (link)

New Mexico FB HC Davie on the recent financial challenges in Albuquerque & some of his own dips, "This is a crucial year for our athletic department. This is a crucial year for everybody. Without a doubt. […] I’ve been all over the country with college football. … Albuquerque, the state of New Mexico, it’s a little non-traditional, nobody can argue that. But, also nobody can argue what benefit having a good, solid football team and what that can do for the community. […] I was nervous. I’ll be honest. It was a very turbulent time. It still is a very turbulent time. […] We can’t keep going back. We can’t talk about issues forever. At some point we have to accept what is. Let’s move forward. That’s about leadership and that’s what I was hired to do. 'So, let’s go.'" (link)
Much has been made of the tweet sent by Arizona quarterback Tate on his reluctance to run the triple option that may or may not have played a role in the hire of former Texas A&M boss Sumlin in Tucson. However, the Arizona Daily Star's Lev points to UofA Prez Robbins & his "pathological" connection to sports, especially in the state of Texas, as a main reason Sumlin ended up with the Wildcats. Robbins, who was previously CEO of the Texas Medical Center & grew up in Mississippi, "If there’s a ball and a score, I’m a fan. But of course, growing up in the South, there’s really two seasons: There’s football and spring football." Zona AD Heeke says Robbins was engaged & involved in the FB search, "I really looked for his thoughts and his opinions. I certainly shared mine. And then we came to the conclusion of what we thought was the right direction for our program — what we want Arizona football to be." More from Robbins on his background. (link)
The phenomenon of Fortnite explored by The New Yorker's Paumgarten, "...there’s something new emerging around Fortnite, a kind of mass social gathering, open to a much wider array of people than the games that came before. Its relative lack of wickedness—it seems to be mostly free of the misogyny and racism that afflict many other games and gaming communities—makes it more palatable to a broader audience, and this appeal both ameliorates and augments its addictive power. (The game, in its basic mode, randomly assigns players’ skins, which can be of any gender or race.) Widespread anecdotal evidence suggests that girls are playing in vast numbers, both with and without boys." (link); Another angle, from WSJ's Leibovitz, "The game has satisfied a set of emotional and social needs the rest of the gamer world has largely ignored: It’s a multiplayer shooter game that revels in goofy, gleeful self-expression. […] It recognizes that even in a culture that presses young adults to grow up fast, there’s a lot to be said for a bit of immature and largely innocent mayhem. It’s as much about construction as it is about destruction, which makes it a more inviting environment for many who have found previous games too violent and stressful." More on the craze that has undoubtedly scooped up many of your student-athletes, too. (link)
It's Personnel: Southern Illinois Interim AD Kill hires former Salukis FB student-athlete Jones as Assoc. AD for Internal Operations. Jones calls Kill his mentor & extended father figure, will have oversight of Softball & Men's/Women's Golf. Quality profile of WBB analyst & all-time great Lieberman in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. Lieberman walks through her though upbringing & hoops maturation in New York City on courts like Rucker Park. "The guys loved that I was full of piss and vinegar. The ones who toughened me up in that park improved my game and changed my life. When people asked my mom how I was doing, she’d say, 'Oh, she scored a touchdown' or, 'She hit a home run.' She didn’t take me seriously until 1976, when, at 17, I was on the first women’s Olympic team in Montreal. She watched us win a silver medal. Then she became my biggest fan." (link)

West Virginia AD Lyons' appointment as chair of the DI FB Oversight Committee & addition to the DI Council should help Mountaineers FB HC Holgorsen, per the Charleston Gazette-Mail's Vingle. Holgorsen has been outspoken on the need for consistency across all 'P5' schedules. Lyons on that issue, "I don’t think it’s necessary every team plays nine conference games, but should every team play 10 Power 5 institutions? Some play eight conference games and some play nine. Some teams play eight and then play four Group of 5 schools. In some years we’re playing 11 [Power 5 schools]. It was my choice and that of my predecessor, meaning Oliver [Luck], but should we all not at least be at 10? Scheduling is a huge thing and it’s something that needs to be looked at. We need to be on the same page. Right now we’re not." A bit more. (link)
"We’re in the final stages. I’d say we’ll be done in the next couple of weeks." That's Georgia Deputy AD for Operations Brooks on construction of the West End Zone project at Sanford Stadium. Upgraded amenities will run the gamut from current student-athletes to recruits to fans. Brooks on that last cohort, "Improved restrooms, improved concessions. A lot of people that sit either in the west end zone or the lower levels of the south or north 100 sections are going to have greater amenities for restrooms and concessions." (link)
SEC Network's Finebaum inks for Time Magazine on "Memories from the South: The Church of SEC Football." Starts by noting impressive game attendance streaks by fans around the league, including one by an Alabama couple who missed their own daughter's wedding for a Crimson Tide kick ("We warned her!"). Thesis: "Perhaps the best way to understand the SEC is to think of it as football’s megachurch. It matters little if you are in the first pew or the last, you’re still part of the congregation." (link)
Also Noticed: Pretty impressive scene in Michigan Stadium for the International Champions Cup matchup between Manchester United & Liverpool yesterday. (link); New Mexico State-themed 'Pistol Pete's 1988' beer is now in cans & ready for FB season. (link); Speaking of beer, Anheuser Busch-InBev revenue continues to slip as consumer tastes move away from Bud & BudLight. Revenue down 3.1% in Q2. (link); Miami (FL) sure is using the word "Paradise" a lot on branding around campus athletic facilities. Is this a new thing? (link); Useful comprehensive FB TV schedule for the upcoming season. (link)
