Here's guessing the SEC will have more to say about the post-game activities from Texas A&M-LSU sometime soon, but until then Tigers analyst & former multi-spot HC Kragthorpe describes what went down from his vantage point, "(A&M AC) Dameyune Craig started the whole thing. Just trash talking and yelling and screaming a bunch of crap. I went up to Dameyune and said, 'Hey, Dameyune get out of here. You won. You don't need to be doing that. Move along.' And that's when I got hit. I mean, I got nailed. He was a young guy. I'm 53. I'm not going to fight him. I have Parkinson's, but even if I didn't, I haven't gotten in a fight since high school. […] I didn't go down, but I clutched over. I was like, 'Damn, he got me right in my pacemaker.' Then it started fluttering like he jostled it. I feel OK, but not as good as I was. I felt like he tore something in there. I will be seeing my neurologist in Baton Rouge on Monday." LSU Senior Assoc. AD for External Communications Munson says the Tigers are looking into the incident. SEC Assoc. Commsish for Communications Vincent indicates the league has been in contact with both sides. (link - article, link - more pictures)
Florida State Prez Thrasher has released a statement condemning a racist social media post directed at FB HC Taggart, the first African American FB HC in FSU history. Thrasher: "A recent racist social media post aimed at our football coach is ignorant and despicable. I speak for the entire FSU community in expressing our disgust and extreme disappointment, and I am glad the state attorney is investigating. Coach Taggart has our full support and as true Seminoles know, he is a respected member of the FSU family." George Washington to Inside Higher Education on the Deadspin article detailing alleged inappropriate behavior by former AD Nero & former MBB HC Lonergan, "The university takes seriously the safety and well-being of its students, including student-athletes, and it carefully and thoughtfully reviewed concerns raised in the past regarding its athletics program. The focus should properly be on the here and now. The athletics program, under new AD Tanya Vogel, is thriving and its leadership is deeply committed to the student-athlete experience." (link)
AthleticDirectorU announces its 2019 Collegiate Coaching Consortium to be held in conjunction with the MBB Final Four in Minneapolis next April. Last year's inaugural version saw six ACs in attendance land HC jobs as the event matches a cohort of top ACs with ADs & Deputy ADs from around the nation. Notable attendees on the AD & speaker side for 2019 include Ohio State's Smith, North Carolina's Cunningham, former Cleveland Browns GM Lombardi, General Mills Chief Human Resources Officer Williams-Roll, Learning Leader podcast host Hawk & many more. (link); ADU also releases an insightful conversation between Loyola Maryland AD Woodruff, Greyhounds MBB HC Hardy & Parker Executive Search's Parker that goes behind the scenes of the search process Woodruff executed last spring. Identifying & vetting candidates, the multi-round interview process & reasons behind Woodruff's eventual selection of Hardy are all dissected. (link)

The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament bracket was announced with Stanford, Minnesota, Illinois and BYU earning the top-four seeds. The Cardinal, the top overall seed, remain the only program in DI history to appear in all 38 editions of the tournament. The Pac-12 leads all conferences with eight teams in, while the Big Ten placed seven. Action starts Thursday. (link - release, link - bracket); The first bowl match-up is off the board as Toledo has been slated to play FIU in the Bahamas Bowl on December 21. This will be the fifth consecutive year Toledo has gone bowling while FIU now makes it two bowls in a row under second-year HC Davis. (link)

"I've heard colleagues say, 'Hey, I didn't want to do this, but I didn't feel like I had a choice. I really think most athletic directors, left to their own devices, would make different decisions. But a lot of places, you get outside constituents who are able to get involved and cloud the decision-making." That's an unnamed 'Power 5' AD to ESPN's Rittenberg, who gets comments from a number of ADs in a quest to figure out how the industry has gotten to this point of massive buyouts becoming the norm. Another P5 boss, "The agents have an advantage because you've got fans yelling. The pressure point is coming from your own fan base. The agents, they're good at what they do, but it's not like they're molecular physicist negotiators. They just understand, 'Hey, this guy is popular with this fan base and I want to get him more money. If I let it be known another school wants his services and is willing to pay X, I can probably get his current school to get to that same level.'" Pretty insightful comment from a third P5 AD, "The best thing that an AD can do is be comfortable with the fact that [he or she] might get fired one day. Because once you get comfortable with the fact that you might be fired, you start making really good decisions that have nothing to do with people's emotions." A "cataclysmic event" is described by an AD as a potential tipping point, one that impairs the financial operation of an entire institution. Lots more, including viewpoints from agents & you can probably guess their perspective. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz says the buyout total (see more below) is up to $48M+ for the current cycle. (link)
USC: Trojans AD Swann has announced the Trojans will retain FB HC Helton, writing in a letter to the fan base: "I am a strong advocate of consistency within a program, sticking by a leader, supporting them, and helping them and their team improve. One season does not define a coach. Remember, Coach Helton inherited a program in turmoil. He won 10 games, including the Rose Bowl, in his first year in 2016. He won 11 games and the Pac-12 title in 2017. He runs a clean program, he graduates his players, he recruits well, he produces NFL players. ... I have heard from many in the Trojan fan base. Some will be happy that Coach Helton remains our coach, others will not. I love our fans' passion about USC football. They have high standards, as do we." (link); According to ESPN's Markazi, the decision to keep Helton is at least in part a function of USC's not having a president, Helton's buyout, and the presumably high price of hiring a big name coach, especially one who is employed somewhere else. (link); Meanwhile, Yahoo's Thamel posits that Swann's decision to stick with Helton effectively signals the end of the AD's honeymoon period with fans: "Swann is now stuck in lockstep with Helton in the wake of this 5-7 season, which puts him squarely in the crosshairs of a controversy born of his administrative ineptitude and lack of experience." Moreover, Thamel contends, Swann "bid against himself" when extending Helton's contract to 2023 and the resultant $15M buyout left USC with few options other than retaining Helton. "In the wake of a self-inflicted administrative debacle, USC chose hoping for a reversal of recent history instead of addressing its grim reality. A charmed life of standing ovations and relentless cheers is about to take a hairpin turn for Lynn Swann. He’s now become the object of ire of the USC fan base. Or, at least what remains of it." (link)
Additional FB HC Decisions: Illinois boss Smith gets a two-year extension as Illini AD Whitman remarks, "I have studied our program extensively, and I see steady progress, both in the development of our current players and the talent we are adding to our roster. To date, we have remained one of the youngest teams in college football, with only nine seniors and nearly 80 freshmen and sophomores. As our players grow in strength, skill, and experience, more wins will follow." (link); Texas Tech AD Hocutt will hire a new HC & outgoing boss Kingsbury is owed $4M+ with no mitigation or offset. (link); North Carolina AD Cunningham will do the same & outgoing HC Fedora is owed $12M+ & there is some language on mitigation. (link, link); Add Western Kentucky AD Stewart to the list. (link); Football Scoop reports Ball State AD Goetz will stick with Cardinals HC Neu. (link)
More Personnel Notes: Florida AD Stricklin on FB HC Mullen's first year as HC in Gainesville: "When you’re at Florida you learn to have pretty high expectations. I’m incredibly pleased. I couldn’t be happier. It would be hard to have anticipated this first year going as well for our guys. Not just the win total but offense being turned around and it’s a lot of fun now." (link); DHR will assist Central Michigan in its search for a new FB HC. (link); Speaking of CMU, former leader Bonamego with a classy move yesterday on Twitter: "Get 100% behind the new Coach and go Kick Butt! I will be watching PROUDLY! Fire Up Chips Forever!" (link); Interesting nugget from Texas & Rivals reporter Richardson: "Former Kansas football coach David Beaty will visit Austin this week & help Texas prepare to face Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game, according to a source. Goal is to learn Texas’ offensive and defensive tendencies, signals that tip off opposing teams, & any other insight."  (link)
Michigan tops USA Today columnist Wolken's Misery Index this week following its lopsided loss to Ohio State on Saturday. Wolken observes that while the Wolverines have won at least 10 games in three of HC Harbaugh's four seasons, Harbaugh has yet to beat Ohio State, therefore, "how much does it really mean?" Wolken goes on to point out that Harbaugh has proven he can build a program that wins at a high level, but now the question is can he build one that wins at the highest level. "Until he does, Saturday’s disaster is going to loom large in the narrative around his program. Perhaps the Wolverines will overcome and grow from it, but for the next 12 months, until they get another shot at Ohio State, they won’t be able to get away from what happened Saturday." Other Misery Index selections include BYU, Wisconsin, Virginia and Auburn. Regarding the latter, Wolken cites Auburn's lack of splash plays on offense this year before asking: "Malzahn’s hefty contract will prevent him from going anywhere or the school from firing him, so the question going into 2019 is how willing is Malzahn to either hand over the offense completely or evolve?" (link)
Louisville has announced it will not charge admission to most non-conference baseball games this spring. After several years of not charging for tickets to Patterson Stadium, the Cardinals last year sold tickets to every game. This year, with the exception of matchups against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, attendance at all non-conference home games will be free. AD Tyra: "While we were incredibly happy with the success of last year’s season ticket packages, the opportunity to boost the number of fans in the ballpark on game days, while also engaging the baseball community of Louisville, were the keys to our decision for the 2019 season. We’re looking forward to some fan-friendly weather for the non-conference games early in the season as we begins our Road to Omaha in 2019.” Games will still be free for all students. Everyone hold the phone for a moment on Amazon's bid for the 22 Disney RSNs. From Fox Business Network's Gasparino, "UPDATE on @Disney's sale of Fox RSN's & @amazon's purported interest. Per sources: despite published reports, $AMZN was NOT a 1st round bidder on all 22. NOW just working w @YESNetwork on deal. $AMZN MAY bid on rest at some point but as of FRIDAY it was NOT a 1st round bidder." (link)
Also Noticed: Michigan vs. Ohio State scored an 8.0 overnight on FOX, up 19% over last year and the highest CFB mark of the season. Auburn vs. Alabama pulled a 5.4 on CBS while Notre Dame vs. USC did a 5.1. Oklahoma vs. West Virginia on Friday saw a 3.4 on ESPN, up 162% over last year, while UCF vs. USF managed a 1.2 (+140%) and Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss a 0.5 on Thanksgiving night. (link); Former Oklahoma Softball star Chamberlain posed for this year's ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue, saying "[Softball] taught me to appreciate my body and what it's capable of...we really need to focus on getting younger girls into sports so they can see their bodies working in a positive way." (link); Texas AD Del Conte says the Golden Hat will stay in Austin until the next Red River Showdown, regardless of Saturday's Big 12 Title game outcome.
