When will ECU hire a new permanent AD? Special Athletics Advisor & former multi-stop AD Hart: "The chancellor (Cecil Staton) will be the one that will make that decision, and at this point there is no definitive timeline." Hart also says no internal search committee has been created yet to assist with the process. On the FB front, Hart continues to point to a "week by week proposition" as the Pirates have performed well in some games under third-year HC Montgomery & not so well in others. Hart believes the lack of a permanent AD hasn't slowed down decision-making for the department, indicates he's in touch with acting AD/COO Workman every single day. (link)
The end of the first MBB-FBI trial may be near as the U.S. Attorney's office circulated a letter to participating parties indicating that both the government & defense will likely rest this Tuesday. The Courier-Journal's Lerner: "That means the case could be in the jury's hands this week." (link)
The Athletic's Spatola: The NCAA's rules are illogical, but most are still playing by them. Big Ten Commish Delany earlier in the week, "I would say as negative as it is — no doubt that they are storm clouds of a significant magnitude — we have 300 Division I institutions and we have 1,000 players that are being recruited every year. While these are not isolated, I think they are at a certain level of recruitment and at certain institutions appear to be a pattern. These are not to be dismissed (and are to be) taken seriously. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of players recruited properly and hundreds and hundreds of programs that are clean." Spatola's core argument, "Regardless of what this trial exposes, a perspective that we should all share is that there are a large number of people with high character in college basketball serving as guardians of not only the game but of what’s right." (link)
Yahoo's Forde with 10 takeaways from yesterday's gridiron action, includes thoughts on the College Football Playoff race narrowing with some notable losses, a number of fake kicks that made a big difference, Nebraska remaining as the only 'Power 5' winless squad & Iowa State HC Campbell continuing to excel in Ames. More. (link); USA Today's Wolken goes with 11, points to the likelihood that the Pac-12 will miss the CFP again, "Michigan has become really interesting," Baylor & UCLA "showing signs," also more. ESPN College GameDay is making its first trip to Washington State as the 5-1 Cougars host 5-1 Oregon next Saturday in Pullman. Lead analyst Herbstreit notes the always-visible WSU flag that has flown for 15 straight years at every GameDay location & now gets to do so at home for the first time. (link)

Boise State AD Apsey confirms he's working on a new deal for FB HC Harsin. Harsin's current base is $1.55M, a number that goes up by $100K annually for the next four years & automatically extends by a year for winning eight games (Harsin has never won less than nine since taking over in 2014). Apsey wants to add years, increase guaranteed comp & add a larger buyout should another school come along & want to hire Harsin away from the Broncos. Right now, there is no buyout if Harsin were to exit. Apsey: "It just protects us to be honest. […] Bryan understands that. The contract is what it is, it got to zero after the fourth year, but he knows that’s important to me. But at the same time we have to give a little also and he has to give a little and I think he’s willing to do that. I’m hopeful we can come to an agreement on something." (link)
USAT money man Berkowitz with yesterday's FB HC bonus updates: Buffalo's Leipold to get $15K for bowl eligibility. Texas' HC Herman picks up $25K, as do LSU's Orgeron and UCF's Heupel. North Texas boss Littrell a bit more, at $35K, while Florida's Mullen pockets $100K for the Gators' sixth win. (link)
Super testy moment in yesterday's Vanderbilt-Florida game in Nashville as Commodores HC Mason was on the field tending to an injured student-athlete & ended up jawing with the UF staff, including HC Mullen & DC Grantham. Benches cleared & headed to mid-field to have a chat. (link); After the game, Mason & Mullen were kosher. Mullen: "Derek and I are really close friends. He's great. He's done an amazing job here. Look at what he's accomplished, how they compete. He and I are close friends." (link - post-game handshake, link - post-game comments)'s editorial board believes college athletics needs "less barriers" to get females into key leadership ranks, like HC jobs. The position is in response to a study by the publication that recapped a low percentage of women-led squads for Syracuse. Thesis: "It's not a matter of filling a quota. It should go without saying that the best, most qualified person for the job should get the job. But women can't compete for a job if they're not in the pool of candidates. Women need to be on coach search committees, and the search committees need to cast a wider net to capture female coaching candidates. Wildhack says he'll conduct national searches to fill future coaching vacancies, to improve the odds that women are in the mix." (link)
The shortening tenure length of ADs is a data point we all commonly point to as evidence of the job's difficulties. The Wall Street Journal's Stoll goes in on the same trend line in corporate America, refers to a study by Temple's Fox School of Business professor Luo, "CEOs are most effective in the initial years because they are more open to outside opinions and less risk-averse." Co-author Andrews: "It eventually becomes a situation where the CEO surrounds themselves with a lot of ‘yes’ people. At a certain point, there are diminishing returns." Optimal tenure length, per the study, 4.8 years. (link)

Northern Arizona is in the midst of "massive upgrades" to its visual technology inside the Walkup Skydome, to the tune of $2.926M. Part of the renovation is being funded by the $75-per-semester-per-student fee while the rest is covered by "other revenue streams." Anthony James Partners assisted with the design while Daktronics is involved for the installation. Also stemming from this project is the creating of a student advisory committee, the purpose of which is to "work with athletics on using student funds, including the athletics fee, and how to make projects mutually beneficial for students and athletics." Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs Veatch on the proposed $50M baseball stadium for the Gators: "Conceptually, we’ve tried to make sure it looks like a Florida facility, with palm trees, and pines and all the things. We’ve got some good opportunities out there based on the functionality of the space." The proposal comes amid a campus-wide push for more green space, pedestrian walkways and defined/visible entry points around campus, while expanding the school's foot print by some six million square feet. The new stadium "could present a new campus gateway to the west" and UF has commissioned a transportation study to see how the stadium will impact traffic flow on that side of campus. Have any of you taken a donation or gift commitment in the form of cryptocurrency yet? Is it even possible within your institution? The Information's Victor details how a handful of schools - Harvard, Stanford, North Carolina, Dartmouth & MIT - have reportedly started to invest part of their endowments in crypto funds. Victor: "A move by endowments into funds that will directly bet on cryptocurrencies signals a major shift in investor sentiment toward the asset class, in the same way that institutions over the past decade became more willing to invest in private tech companies." (link)
Also Noticed: Alabama FB players generally pleased to hear Dixieland Delight again in Bryant-Denny Stadium yesterday, though some noted hearing some students still sing it "the wrong way." (link); Take a look at the new cannon for UTSA. (link); Sixty former FCS level student-athletes have signed to play in the newly forming Alliance of American Football. Each player gets a three-year, $250K contract with medical benefits and an "out clause" to go to the NFL. 50 players per roster, 10 week season, more details here, including the names of several former CFB HCs who will lead teams in the new league.
