With the FB HC changes at Houston, Miami (FL), Temple & (seemingly very likely) West Virginia all right after the early signing period, notable attorney Mars says his phone has started to ring as some of the collective 66 signed student-athletes want to rethink their situations. National Letter of Intent Director Peal expects to see some requests for release in the coming days, but doesn't think it'll be more than 25 as some believe. Potential down side of changing the rule & allowing signed student-athletes out when the HC leaves? Via CBSSports.com's Dodd, who sources someone close to the NCAA Transfer Working Group, "All these kids better make sure they have a place to land. Everybody needs to be a little careful. … The new coach can come in and say, 'I didn't sign you. I don't want you.' I guess we'll test that proposition." (link)
"I think the most important thing that’s happened over the last 30 years — and it’s come in fits and starts — is those of us that have membership in FCS have become comfortable in our own skin." That's longtime Missouri Valley Football Commish Viverito on the evolution of the FCS landscape. Appalachian State's 2007 upset over Michigan in Ann Arbor pointed to as a watershed moment for the subdivision, but ESPN GameDay Coordinating Producer Gallagher says of his show & network's coverage of the FCS space, "I just think people realize the line of demarcation between FBS and FCS is clearly not as great as it once was. Maybe it was always this close and people just didn’t realize it." Central Arkansas boss & Playoffs selection committee chair Teague on the added visibility, "There are just a lot of things that have fallen into place." (link)
Compelling piece from the Star-Telegram's Engel with Texas AD Del Conte talking about the murder of his father back in October of 2000, which Del Conte calls an "accident." Del Conte reflects, "You need time to mourn and I never did. The pain is the same if you lose someone whether it’s cancer, but there is a chance to say goodbye. This was so violent and the opportunity to say goodbye is not there. There will be a lifetime of hollowness. I used to call him all the time for advice. I find myself weepy at weird times. Big events. Maybe it’s my age. Just ... missing my dad." Also, "How do you reach forgiveness for the person who did that? But, more importantly, how do you let that go? That was a long time. Do I forgive an individual and believe in God? You question that. For a long time I did. You’re talking about a guy who gave his life for serving others to be killed in that manner." More. (link)
As of yesterday the cheapest tickets for next Monday's CFP title tilt between Alabama & Clemson was just $245, compared to $1,700-ish this time last year. TicketIQ Founder Lawrence: "It will be interesting to see if it’s completely sold through. I think it will be dicey. I think there’s a pretty good chance it doesn’t sell out or there’s empty seats. I actually think it has less to do with fatigue than it does just distance." Good chart at the bottom of the cheapest get-in prices for college championship games since 2011. Last time it was this low was Crimson Tide-Tigers from Glendale in 2016 ($202). (link)
Air Force scores an outdoor NHL Stadium Series game in February of 2020 as the Colorado Avalanche will host at Falcon Stadium. Second such service academy involvement as Navy hosted a game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium last year. (link); Dallas & NHL brass talk about the novelty of bringing an outdoor Winter Classic game to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, which will also go down in 2020. Dallas Sports Commission Executive Director Paul: "I think the Cotton Bowl has a long, storied history on Jan. 1 that we kind of lost." NHL EVP of Creative Development & Programming Mayer: "I had grown up with the Cotton Bowl, I had always thought in my head, how cool would it be to bring the Cotton Bowl back to January 1?" (link)

Oklahoma AD Castiglione awards FB HC Riley with an extension, which should quell some talk about a jump to the NFL. No specific terms communicated to the marketplace as Riley was due $4.9M in 2019. Castiglione: "We're obviously appreciative of what's already been accomplished in such a short time, but strengthening our relationship with Lincoln is also important as we collectively focus on the larger goals of our program. He has proven to be one of the most innovative minds in the game today as well as a very successful leader for his student-athletes." (link)
Outgoing Ohio State FB HC Meyer after his Rose Bowl win over Washington, "I don't believe I'm going to coach again." Meyer's wife, Shelley, "I would be ecstatic if he didn't [coach again]. I'm done. I want him to be done. He's too intense. […] I'm sad, but I'm really happy for him because this is what needed to happen right now. He's been fun again. He's back to the Urban I knew when he wasn't so stressed out and anxious and having headaches." (link, link)
ESPN's Khan Jr. reports Houston is finalizing a deal with West Virginia FB HC Holgorsen with an announcement that could come as soon as today. Khan Jr. says Holgorsen & his agent have been trying to negotiate a new deal with the Mountaineers "but...asked for more than West Virginia was willing to offer." Also, interestingly, "Another source told ESPN that Holgorsen has not been in touch with his coaching staff since the 34-18 loss to Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl. Holgorsen stayed in Orlando after the game instead of returning to the team." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz with the bowl bonus tracker: Texas HC Herman gets $50K for his Sugar Bowl win, ends the season with $100K extra. Ohio State ACs combine for $2.3M (more than 50 FBS public schools paid in regular compensation to their 10-man AC staffs this season), topped by DC Schiano's $446K. Retiring HC Meyer, nor his Rose Bowl counterpart Petersen at Washington, picked up any additional bonuses for yesterday's game, but finish with $350K and $450K, respectively, for the season. Kentucky HC Stoops with $250K for the Citrus Bowl win, plus a one-year extension. "With Kentucky winning 10 games this season -- a first for the program since 1977 -- Stoops has triggered two years' worth of contract extensions. That will carry him through June 30, 2025 and add $10.75 million in basic value to his deal, 75% of which is guaranteed." Season's worth of bonuses total $1M. Penn State HC Franklin earned $200K for the Nittany Lions' bowl appearance. If Iowa finishes in top 25 of final Amway Coaches or AP poll, HC Ferentz will get another $125K. (link)
An update in the lawsuit involving College of Charleston AD Roberts brought by former Baseball HC Heath. Heath's camp is now alleging Roberts deleted communications between he & now-HC Holbrook, as well as lied to the court about his actions leading up to Heath's exit. Roberts' cell phone records did show a string of calls with numbers associated to Holbrook in June of 2017, as well as communications with parents who later submitted emails questioning Heath's treatment of student-athletes. "Heath is asking the court to set aside the settlement agreement which was on the table, so he can renew his lawsuit against the college." (link)
Northwestern State unveils plans for a new $3.4M strength and conditioning space for student-athletes from all 14 sports to enjoy. Construction timeline: ASAP. The facility will include a new weight room with space for 100+ workouts occurring simultaneously, a 25-foot artificial turf pad and a new nutrition center. Demons AD Burke: "This will further enhance the recruiting process, and as you do that you get better student athletes. When you have that higher level of success...it’s not all about the athletics, it’s about the University." Burke thinks donors won't have a problem committing to the cause. (link)
Our thoughts are with the family of Wagner FB student-athlete Johnson, who was shot and killed on Sunday evening. FB HC Houghtaling: "This has obviously been an extremely difficult day for everyone associated with our football program and Wagner College as a whole. Above all, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the Johnson family. I feel inadequate right now as far as finding the right words to describe Tyamonee and his incredible spirit. 'T' had a way of making everyone feel better, no matter the situation. I will be forever grateful for all the lessons he taught me and so many others." (link); More condolences, as 20-year-old Purdue super fan, Tyler Trent, lost his valiant battle with a rare form of bone cancer yesterday. (link)
Also Noticed: I'm sure you've seen this as a bit of a dangerous scene played out before the Sugar Bowl as Texas' Bevo went after Georgia's Uga. (link, link); Goodyear inks a multi-year extension to continue as the title sponsor of the Cotton Bowl. The tire brand will also remain as an Official Sponsor of the CFP. (link); Athlon Sports' Fischer breaks down the bowl records not only by conference, but by divisions within a conference, where applicable: SEC West: 4-1; B1G West: 4-1; Big 12: 4-3; SBC East: 3-0; ACC Atl: 3-1; Pac-12 N: 3-2; CUSA East: 2-1; CUSA West: 2-1; Indep: 2-1; MWC W: 2-2; SEC East: 2-4; ACC Co: 2-4; MWC MT: 1-0; MAC East: 1-1; B1G East: 1-3; AAC East: 1-3; AAC West: 1-2; Pac-12 S: 0-2; SBC West: 0-2; MAC West: 0-4 (link); Looks like CBS & Nielsen still haven't reached a deal. Ad agencies will still get ratings for CBS shows, but the network itself won't be able to directly see the same data. (link)
A trio of Dublin City University professors contribute to this HBR piece: "How Companies Can Ensure Maternity Leave Doesn't Hurt Women's Careers." "While most organizations spend heavily on onboarding programs for newcomers and graduate recruits, we found that almost none pay the same level of attention to reintegrating employees after parental leave." Here are three recommendations for leaders: 1) Support a culture that positions parental leave as a brief interlude, not a major disruption; 2) Offer phased returns; and, 3) Set up mentoring programs for returning employees, matching more experienced caregivers with new parents. Also, three pieces of advice for managers: 1) Create an open dialog with returning women; 2) Don't assume you know what a new parent's career or family priorities are; and, 3) Be aware of how deeply personal and individual the transition can be. (link)
