The second woman who has accused Virginia Lt. Gov. Fairfax of sexual assault also says she was raped by a Duke MBB student-athlete in 1999. Blue Devils MBB HC Krzyzewski after last night's win over Virginia, "I think there was an allegation made, right? So, I'm not sure if it's true or not, but there is an allegation. I did not find out about until late last night. I had no knowledge. That (allegation) is hugely important and our university will take care of whatever actions and give whatever information that is needed. [...] Something like that is serious. Our school looks at it this way. We will do whatever we can to answer whatever questions are posed to us." Duke AD White: "Duke first learned of the allegations involving a student-athlete last night when they were reported by the media. Coach Krzyzewski confirms that he had no knowledge of the alleged conduct from 1999. The university is looking into the matter and will have no further comment at this time." (link)
Arizona AD Heeke spoke to the media during halftime of MBB's tip with Washington State last night. Heeke: "I want to be very honest, certainly can't talk about a lot of things that have gone on, but I want to be very, very clear that we support this basketball program, support these players, support the coaching staff. [...] I think I've been very clear in my support of Coach Miller & the leadership of this program. Anything that's been reported to the contrary of that is false." Follows-up with a couple of "I can't comment on that," including questions on if there's an active NCAA investigation, also, "When faced with situations, we will continue to do the right things. This is an iconic brand, a world class university, we're going to continue to do the right thing." "I think we all in college basketball are concerned about the image of all of our programs with the recent issues that are going on. We need to get through that so the game of college basketball can be at a better place. [...] Any time you're touched with that it's difficult and disappointing and it's hard to take, but again, we're very confident in this program going forward." 11-minute interview. (link)
MBB Tournament Bracket: Committee chair & Stanford AD Muir led the first roll-out of the Top 16 seeded squads before Saturday's action. Arguably the most important comment from Muir, "There are more than 1,000 games left in the season so there’s no telling what our top four lines will look like come Selection Sunday. Last year, 13 of the 16 teams we revealed in February remained in the top 16, and two of the three teams that fell out were on the 5 line. In 2017, 15 of the 16 teams remained the same. At the same time, there are teams dealing with significant injuries while others are getting healthy and improving. A lot can happen. I know all of us are looking forward to the stretch run of the regular season." (link); CBSSports.com's Palm: "Don't expect to see the formula for the NET this season. Since it is the first year with it and it is so different than anything the NCAA has used before, it will likely be reevaluated at the end of the season. It could even be tweaked for next year, and if I had to guess, that tweak would be to most likely to reduce the impact of an uncapped margin of victory." (link); Yahoo's Eisenberg doesn't think the committee is being "over reliant" on the new NET, which he says is bad news for some highly-ranked mid-majors. (link); Bleacher Report's Miller with five takeaways, "Q1 wins are still huge, conference records don't matter, road records do, student-athlete absences are being considered & the committee loves the NET." (link)
"Momentum is the best gift an athletic director could ask for in year one." That's Washington State AD Chun who reflects on his time in Pullman thus far that, as described by the Spokesman-Review's Blanchette, has ranged "from the unspeakably tragic to the wildly triumphant, with nearly every imaginable detour in between." Chun says he's confident the Pac-12 has made necessary changes to correct the FB instant replay review issues from this past season, notes that sustaining success is much harder than building it up, points to positive outcomes of the loss of FB student-athlete Hilinski, "If circumstances dictate that we’re the school that’s called to do this, so be it. It’s also reassuring that this isn’t a one-person initiative. This is more driven by our students and how much they care." (link)
ESPN College GameDay will again broadcast from Lexington next Saturday as top-ranked Tennessee visits Kentucky. The GameDay show will originate from Memorial Coliseum on campus. Ninth visit to UK. (link); Pretty neat coast-to-coast social media execution by Washington as its MBB's Twitter account asked UW fans what states they were watching from last night. The Huskies updated a national map as the answers rolled in. Very few states not represented. (link)

New Air Force AD Pine says he was most drawn to the opportunity to lead the Falcons based on "an all-around elite model" from academics to athletics to leadership development. "I really think this is a model for all of Division I." Calls fundraising "the lifeblood of any athletic department," mentions that he's seen it done successfully in a "number of different ways" given his stops at the likes of Cal, Maryland, Army West Point, Holy Cross & others, "We're going to need to ask folks to make investments here that maybe haven't been done in the past." More. (link)
Clemson FB HC Swinney indicates its possible the banned substance that led to the suspension of three student-athletes right before the College Football Playoff could have come from within the program. Swinney: "Oh yeah, I mean, there’s a chance that it could come from anything. They’re going to test everything and look at everything. And that’s the problem. As you really look at this stuff, it could be a contaminant that came from anything, that was something that was cleared and not a problem, and all of a sudden, it becomes there was something." Further, Swinney says he's only talked to Tigers AD Radakovich a little bit about the appeals process, "it's a huge undertaking." (link)
Interesting & blunt comments by Georgia MBB HC Crean after yesterday's loss to Ole Miss that dropped the Bulldogs to 10-13 (1-9), "It’s all on me. Because I’m the one who decided to keep these guys. And I get it, because the last thing I can do with making decisions on keeping guys in the program in the spring, is now overly get mad at them because I’m the one who made the decision. I live with that every day and it doesn’t mean that they’re not great kids. But very few programs, when there’s a takeover okay, when you guys who haven’t done it at any point really in their career, a lot of those guys move on. That’s what happens when there’s a job change. And I didn’t do that. And I’m not going to complain. And we’ve just got to do everything we can to fix it." (link)
The Tribune Star's Golden: "Was researching an article and came across a stat that kind of blew my mind. I compared MVC attendance from 2009 to 2019. Every MVC school in the league in 2009 has seen its attendance drop, many by a lot. The lone exception? Indiana State." Former Sycamores Assoc. AD for External Operations & current Drexel AVP for Institutional Advancement Burchette responds, "Can rationalize that conference realignment (losing Creighton / Wichita State) & that fewer 'brand name' non-conf opponents that are willing to play on the road vs the MVC play a role in overall decline. Impressive ISU stayed at similar per game range w/ less appealing opponents." (link)
New Mexico AD Nunez & Prez Stokes spent five-ish hours with state lawmakers yesterday & were further pressed on planned sport program cuts for the Lobos. Representative Martinez: "Why are we punishing the programs that have actually been successful?" Martinez also called FB a "money pit." House Appropriations and Finance Committee Chairwoman Lundstrom asked why the university didn't consult her about the cuts before coming to a decision, "I am (House) appropriations chairwoman, for goodness sake. If it’s about needing resources, wouldn’t I be the appropriate one to work with?" Prez Stokes: "I couldn’t work this deal out with you without truly alienating (faculty members)." (link)
East Carolina AD Gilbert is no stranger to improving Title IX situations, having been at Alabama when Softball was added to the Tide's portfolio and at Southern Miss when Beach Volleyball was introduced. As the Pirates embark upon their second Women's LAX season, Gilbert notes: "If we’re going to have a sports program, it’s important to support that sports program and invest in it. I think we have some very good women’s sports programs that are competitive. I want each of our sports programs to be competitive, and I think it’s important to invest in those programs to be successful." The program cost ECU $293,977 annually in operating costs, excluding coaches salaries and scholarship money. Comparatively, Volleyball runs $235K and Women's Tennis $190K. More Gilbert: "Part of that growth process is building a foundation, and it’s much like building a house. You’ve got to build a foundation, you’ve got to put the studs up and roof it in, put the sidewalls in and you can’t skip a step. So, as you’re building a new program like lacrosse, we’ve got to go through that same process to help them be competitive." (link)
Fairfield AD Schlickmann sits down for another 'From the Chair' convo, updates all things Stags, including footage of the new hitting & pitching facility for both Baseball & Softball. Looks like concrete is getting poured, "There's something cooking everyday. It's great to see progress. We have our foot on the gas." Schlickmann also points to the university moving forward with "increased rankings" & points to recently alumni visits he's made from coast to coast, "I'm inspired by the buzz." More. (link)
Also Noticed: Follow-up on yesterday's James Madison multimedia rights note, the Dukes are being assisted by Leona Marketing Group, who is doing the same at Southern Utah & UTRGV; Who knows if the new American Alliance of Football (AAF) pro league will make it long term, but a live feed of the replay official making his/her decision is pretty compelling content. Which college conference will be bold enough to try this first? (link); Check out the time-lapse video of the build from Colonnade's Venu+ Team for the NCAA MBB Final Four set up in U.S. Bank Stadium.
