D1.jobs: New opportunities below at South Carolina & Ole Miss. Post your openings here.
USA Today's Berkowitz gets us caught up on early proceedings in the Alston case. Here's the starter, "Plaintiffs' written opening in Alston case shows they're building off testimony from NCAA exec Kevin Lennon that, in addition to cost-of-attendance-based scholarships, athletes now get numerous 'incidental-to-participation' benefits 'not related to the principle of amateurism.'" Plaintiffs are pushing for an injunction that would leave additional compensation at the feet of conferences, though there's also an argument for the NCAA to set limits "that involve 'cash sums untethered to educational expenses.'" The plaintiffs are also pointing to deposition testimony by Big 12 Commish Bowlsby, Clemson & Alabama FB facilities context & former Wisconsin FB student-athlete Jones, who put a portion of his monthly $700 stipend into savings. On the NCAA's side, "In opening argument in Alston, NCAA lays down significant marker for appeal, noting that Judge Wilken's summary judgment ruling on relevant market and anticompetitive effects may run counter to more recent Supreme Court ruling in American Express case involving two-sided markets." Lots more. (link)
According to Google Maps, a drive from Savannah, GA to Fairbanks, AK includes more mileage in Canada than it does in the continental 48 states (total = 4,429 from campus to campus). Savannah State AD Steward is headed on that exact path as he exits the Tigers' department to take over the Alaska Fairbanks portfolio. Steward: "I pledge to Nanook nation that I will bring all of the athletic experience and knowledge that I have gained over the past 20-plus years in hopes of continuing the development of student-athletes while simultaneously winning championships. I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life, as well as my career." (link, link)
College Football Playoff Executive Director Hancock again asked about the status of Ohio State AD Smith as part of the committee given the last couple of weeks in Columbus, "Yes, there has (been conversations about Smith’s status). Of course, we’re all appalled by all forms of abuse, and particularly how it’s handled by officials is always important. The University is taking action on the matter. He made a mistake of judgment, which he acknowledged. We have full belief in Gene’s ability to make decisions in the selection process. […] I suppose we do (hold the power to remove members). We haven’t done that, but I suppose we do. Since we appoint the members, we would be able to say (whether someone) is not the right fit, but it didn’t come to that. It didn’t rise to that level. If it had, we certainly would have discussed it, but it didn’t." (link)
Kansas State unveils its new strategic plan. Mission: "Our mission is to foster a culture in which our student-athletes have every opportunity to reach their maximum potential academically, athletically, mentally and socially while operating an organization that is anchored by a genuine commitment to K-State, our supporters and each other." Strategic Priorities: Support Student-Athlete Success and Well-Being, Win Championships, Provide the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, Foster a Positive and Inclusive Department Culture, Grow and Efficiently Manage Financial Resources, Encourage Diversity and Inclusiveness with All Student-Athletes, Coaches and Staff, as well as Cultivate and Promote an Atmosphere of Compliance. Key Values: Family, character, diversity, innovation, excellence, engagement & hard work. (link); Watch: 'Ask the AD' segment with Wildcats boss Taylor on the new plan. (link); Check out the 2:40 video leading the roll-out. (link)
Northern Iowa AD Harris also rolls out a new strategic plan for the Panthers, which looks to be the first such effort in department history. Core values: academic excellence, community engagement, competitive excellence, diversity & inclusion, financial accountability & integrity. Competitive goals include finishing in the Top 100 of the Learfield Directors' Cup, within the Top 10 of all FCS institutions, winning the MVC all-sports trophy & every program finishing in the league's top three. The plan also calls for the Panther Scholarship Club to raise $2M annually, increase season ticket sales by 50% & the completion of a number of facility upgrades. Harris: "We can’t control (everything) ... but you really do control how high you are going to set your bar. You control the passion, tenacity and consistency with which you go after those goals and that is what we are going to do. We’re going to go after it." More. (link - article, link - full plan)
Texas A&M AD Woodward is pretty clear about how his leadership tenure will be measured, "I accept that – it's part of the territory. Football supports everyone else and everything else. It's very important to what we do." Woodward also says a return to LSU, should the Tigers' top spot ever become open, is not in the cards, "I have no intention and no desire to go anywhere else. People forget that I've been gone (nearly) 15 years now. I love it here. I love the people, the university and the commitment to education. Until they don't want me, I want to be here." (link)
All the elements needed for a FB Saturday are ready to roll in Arkansas' new north end zone digs. Hogs AD Yurachek notes some office work that still remains, but, "Everything else will be ready, and it will be finished within the $160 million budget which has been the case since this project started." In total: 40 suites, 70 loge boxes, 1,967 new seats. Lots of pictures via the link once you scroll down. Pretty impressive look. All suites & loge boxes are sold. (link)
South Carolina AD Tanner indicates the Gamecocks are in the "fourth quarter" of their fundraising effort for the new $50M Long Center that will serve as FB's operational home. USC's Development team has generated 20 gifts of $250K or more, along with 104 at $1K+ & 31 naming opportunities. Tanner also points to use of the space FB will vacate once the project is done, "Look for some creative changes coming down the road to make our gamedays in Gamecock Country even better." (link)
Notable hoops data expert Pomeroy inks on the NCAA's new NET model, points to the strength of schedule metric as one the RPI-conditioned coaches, administrators & fans alike think was an input, when really it's an output. Pomeroy understands why the NCAA isn't going to apply NET to past seasons, but, "It is not as important to know how the NET works as it is to know that it works. And seeing how the NET viewed past seasons would go a long way toward providing that comfort." Ultimately, at the core of March candidacy, Pomeroy believes teams will be measured heavily on their best wins & worst losses. A bit more. (link)
TV/Cable/Streaming: The Athletic's Deitsch with 3K+ words on how networks will present the upcoming FB season, along with a number of thoughts on the state of the game. ESPN VP of College Sports Fitting does not believe the controversies at Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan State & elsewhere will impact interest in the on-field competition. ESPN/ABC lead analyst Herbstreit: "We’ll see where we go from here, but, yeah, this has been a rough summer for the sport for sure." Lots more on executives expecting a ratings up tick, broadcasting crew dynamics & additional thoughts on suspended Ohio State HC Meyer. (link); Arkansas professor Dittmore writes on the Big Ten Network-Comcast resolution & the market positioning of Stadium, "When the Big Ten Network launched in 2007, cable and satellite distribution was at its peak. As cord-cutting and other disruptions have changed the marketplace, legacy media networks are frequently finding themselves at odds with distribution systems. How would the ecosystem be different had the Big Ten, SEC, NFL, and other league-branded networks taken Stadium’s approach and made their content accessible anywhere, rather than putting content in one place and hoping it is distributed without issue?" (link); It's finally official: 600+ OVC games are headed to ESPN+. (link); Northeast Conference Commish Morris chatted with 1.Question's Brown on creating NEC Front Row, "We wanted to create a digital network that was our own. We wanted to have full control over the content, the design, the look, and the amenities provided. […] I get emails from parents who are overseas and really appreciate the ability to watch their kids play even though they can't attend the games. […] We pride ourselves in telling our presidents that we're giving the conference the same service that other conferences have but we're doing it without breaking the bank." (link); Looks like the Chicago Cubs are going to create their own network after October of 2019. Lots of eyes will be watching. (link)

Notre Dame AD Swarbrick with part two of his three entry series with The Observer, this one with reviews of his five off-season HC hires. On longtime former Men's Soccer HC Clark, "He was the department’s sage. He brought a lot of wisdom to this place, helped shape its culture — he was the coach most of our other coaches would go to for advice. So we’ll miss him greatly." Says new HC Riley has done an excellent job of striking the right balance between reverence for Clark's ways & establishing his own program. Internal hires highlighted four of the five changes, though national searches were executed, "There’s undoubted importance of having a sense of this place and its uniqueness and how it works, but having said that, that’s not the only reason to hire a coach. You want the best coach you can find — one that can lead, educate and win national championships — and we think we found them in those coaches." (link)

Maryland Senior Assoc. AD for Communications & Media Relations Bolno is headed to Fairfax as the new Deputy AD of External Operations at George Mason. Bolno's last day with the Terps is this Friday. GMU AD Edwards: "I identified Zack for this important leadership position to help develop, evaluate and implement the overall strategic plan of the Athletic Department. His strong and diverse background in both collegiate and professional sports will help us cultivate impactful relationships on a local, regional and national platform." (link)
The Idaho State Journal Editorial Board notes some strong moves by new Idaho State Prez Satterlee, which late last week included the exit of Bengals AD Tingey. Within the editorial, "And to be fair, it's not entirely clear what triggered Jeff Tingey's removal. The poor performance of ISU's sports teams during his tenure has been well documented along with the multiple controversies that have happened during his watch. That being said, Satterlee might want to provide a little more information on why he made the change just one week before the start of the football season. The local rumor mill is in overdrive regarding the reasons behind Jeff Tingey's removal and Satterlee should clear the air. […] In any case, we hope removing Jeff Tingey reverses ISU's image as being a loser when it comes to athletics." (link)
HuskerOnline.com's Rosen says Nebraska is set to launch an overhaul of its Husker Athletic Fund today "to attract more annual gifts from fans, boosters, and potential boosters. One of the goals is to lay the financial foundation for undisclosed major athletics projects that loom ahead." Rosen indicates one push will be to fill the funnel with more low end donors. Five levels: Walk On ($100 to $499), Blackshirt ($500 to $1,499), Captain ($1,500 to $4,999), Director ($5,000 to $9,999) & All American ($10,000 to $24,999). Goal is to get to 22K donors annually within the next five years (currently at 16,700). Lots more. (link)
The Star Tribune continues its look at Minnesota's ticket sales & though the 'Big 3' of FB, MBB & Men's Hockey are down a touch, lots of non-revenue & Women's programs are up for the Gophers. Since 2014, Baseball is up 49%, Wrestling +24%, WBB +4%, Gymnastics +30%, Women's Hockey +20%, Soccer +22%, Softball +444% & Volleyball +91%. Overall, Women's sports have increased ticket sales by 40% since '14. (link)
Ohio State FB DC Schiano was asked yesterday about nearly becoming the new HC at Tennessee, "Certainly things like that are tough to stomach, but now is not the time to talk about it. There will be. There will be a time, but now is not the time." (link); Interesting oral history on the search process that landed current Iowa FB HC Ferentz the job in Iowa City back in 1998. Then-UI AD & current Big 12 Commish Bowlsby held hotel rooms in the initials of his children & switched private plane plans once in the air to throw people off the search committee's trail. Bowlsby on Ferentz, "Now, he enjoys a position as the winningest coach in the history of the university. But I would be less than honest if I didn’t say that there were some long afternoons as he was getting his program established." More. (link)
More Personnel: Former Texas A&M turned Arizona FB student-athlete Marchiol has now left the Wildcats after allegations of his use of racial slurs in a Hudl clip have surfaced. (link); USA Today's Nightengale digs in on the MLB managers "salaries in free fall" and general lack of job security in the profession with as many as 10 potential vacancies after this season. Three among the group make $6M annually (Angels' Scioscia, Cubs' Maddon and Giants' Bochy) while the Cardinals' Shildt and Reds' Riggleman, both of whom are interim managers, make only $.7M in their prorated deals. Complete list included, which enables you to see that Oregon State Baseball HC Casey makes more than 13 managers in MLB. (link, link); Kennesaw State extends FB HC Bohannon by three years, taking him through 2023. (link); UTSA AD Campos hires former Northern Arizona and Southern Miss HC Kroll as the new Women's Tennis HC for the Roadrunners. (link); Maryland Eastern Shore removes the interim tag for Callarman who will now be the HC of volleyball. (link); Northwestern State AD Burke extends Baseball HC Barbier through 2022 and Softball HC Pickett gets an extra year on his deal, which now goes through 2021 with an option for 2022. (link)
New Arizona State FB HC Edwards plans to leverage data & analytics for his in-game decisions, which could include some non-traditional moves, "We’ve been practicing it and looking it and seeing how it works. I think everybody is going to it. It’s just, how much do you believe?" The Sun Devils talked to Louisville-based EdjSports, which does considerable work in the NFL & has a growing presence in the college game, but didn't end up doing a deal. Edwards also notes his understanding of the game & "gut" ability to read a situation. (link)

The Sports Group's Jackson apparently took to Facebook to air out more concerns about his interactions with leadership at Maryland that were prominent in the news late last week. Jackson: "The University of Maryland Department of Athletics is a dysfunctional viper pit. The unfortunate thing is that the political gamesmanship, internal backbiting and administrative incompetence compromise the health, safety and development of Maryland student-athletes. […] Every employee seemed to (figuratively) carry daggers that they were prepared to thrust into the backs of their co-workers. University of Maryland student-athletes deserve better." (link)
"You voluntarily throw yourself down a flight of stairs, and as you’re going down hitting step by step, you’re bumping your head, you’re banging your back, you’re hitting your elbow, you land at the bottom and you’re like: Oh, I got a headache, that hurt, I’m exhausted. You stand up, brush yourself off and you’re like, let’s do it again. Every day is basically throwing yourself down a flight of stairs. There’s this adrenaline rush, you get beaten up, you’re tired, you’re exhausted, your body hurts, you’re always grinding trying to figure out how to do something different, how to do something better. And you end the day and you’re completely spent." That's how Auburn AD Greene describes his first six months on The Plains. Ultimately, Greene says he's in it for the long haul. All part of the "Driving Plains" interview series with Auburn Undercover's Marcello. 10-minute watch. (link)
Greene's FB Tigers will take on Washington in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon & The Athletic's Mandel looks at the the true benefits of "playing up" in non-conference slates as CFP boss Hancock says the committee still highly values OOC opponents. However, Auburn HC Malzahn & UW boss Petersen aren't so sure. Petersen last week, "They knocked our schedule a few years ago (2016), and we went to the playoffs, so I don’t know. We just try to win the games that are in front of us. … You win all your games, you’re going to the playoffs. That’s how I think." (link)
Liberty: The growth of LU as an institution & athletic department isn't lost on Flames Assoc. AD for Communications Wetmore, who says of the mid-1999s, "I remember at times you were not sure if your paycheck would be good. There were some difficult times in those days. There has certainly been an explosion in progress here since that time." Now with an endowment of $1B+, AD McCaw notes the move to the ASUN, "Our program is at a point where we felt like we needed to step up to a higher level of competition and we saw that in the ASUN. The quality of the academic institutions in the ASUN was another factor. Also, the TV markets in the ASUN are very attractive to us and the ASUN’s overall footprint in the Bible Belt states really fits us." McCaw says athletics has just "scratched the surface" & "we're very excited to see where we can go in the next 5-10 years." (link); In a deal with ESPN, all six of this season's home FB games will be seen on ESPN3. (link); Liberty & New Mexico State will meet four times in the next 14 months on the gridiron. Scheduling expert/consultant Brown says LU's path to building a full FBS schedule in such a small window is pretty remarkable. More. (link)
Birmingham-based Clutch! LLC is a peer-to-peer gameday parking app company that thus far has raised $680K+ of its $750K goal in this offering. Most interestingly: Former Alabama AD Battle is on the company's board of directors. Clutch! CEO Strickler: "While we all love our college football here in the South, there are parts of the gameday experience many of us dread, like fighting traffic and finding a convenient place to park. The Clutch! app provides a way for more fans, regardless of donor status, to secure a reserved parking pass for games. By allowing fans to reserve space for parking and tailgating offered by students, churches, and local businesses near campus, we’re giving fans a much better alternative to driving in circles looking for someone holding a cardboard sign." Clutch! will launch in Tuscaloosa this season. (link)
Also Noticed: The Title IX complaint against Eastern Michigan, alleging discrimination against female student-athletes for the elimination of the Women's Tennis and Softball programs, has been dismissed by the Office of Civil Rights. (link); Headline: Baylor denies claims it used 'mole' to infiltrate sexual assault survivor groups (link); Oregon is guaranteed $4.5M to play in the 2022 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game against Georgia. Comes with a ticket allotment of 6,052, valued at $1.275M. Also, the Ducks will get $3.5M to open next season against Auburn in Arlington. (link); Texas AD Del Conte maintains that MLS games will not be played in Myers Stadium or Darrell K Royal- Texas Memorial: "There’s nothing new. They’ve got to get all their stuff completely finalized before we enter any negotiations. I hear this, that. I’m worried about the University of Texas. Until they get to a point where I understand what’s taking place, I don’t know. There’s no significant progress made one way or another. Too many unknowns." (link); The use of metal detectors by Colorado State led to longer lines getting into Canvas Stadium this past weekend, but AD Parker says "express" lines will be added moving forward in hopes of alleviating some of the congestion. (link); UIC and Aspire do a deal. The Flames are the third Horizon League school to come on board.
