D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Auburn (x2), Washington & Texas Tech. Post your openings here.
Ohio State: The investigation into the Urban Meyer saga will be done on Sunday & a report will be communicated next week, shared first with the Board of Trustees. Then, "Following deliberations with the board, and appropriate time for consideration, President Michael V. Drake will announce his decision." (link); Stadium's McMurphy with more on former Buckeyes AC Smith, reports Smith had inappropriate items shipped to his office on campus, took indecent pictures of himself in multiple locations, including in the White House during the celebration of Bucks' 2014 National Championship, as well as having questionable relations with an OSU staffer. McMurphy also publishes the text thread with Smith's attorney on the latest developments. (link); Yahoo's Forde: "Why would Urban Meyer risk his legendary career over one troubled assistant?" Forde says McMurphy's latest information "adds a new level of embarrassment to a situation that already has sullied the reputation of a school that also announced Thursday that it is under federal investigation for its handling of allegations of sexual misconduct by former university physician Richard Strauss. The succession of news stories leave a scandal-weary city wondering what could be coming next, and whether it can get any worse. The school should be at its saturation point with jaw-dropping Zach Smith headlines by now." Forde's thesis: "There is no way to argue that Meyer was oblivious to his assistant’s issues — even if he didn’t know all of them, he knew enough of them that he should have been profoundly concerned. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith knew enough, too. Was it loyalty to Smith’s grandfather, former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, a mentor of Meyer’s? If so, that was spectacularly misplaced and unrewarded loyalty." (link)
The Maryland Board of Regents "asserts control" over the two investigations in College Park as state Governor Hogan has implored the leadership group to "get to the bottom" of the McNair situation & reports of a toxic culture around the UMD FB program. Yesterday's board call lasted four hours & included Terps Prez Loh, who says he welcomes the Board's oversight. More clarity coming next week on processes surrounding the probes. More from Governor Hogan: "The only thing we know for sure is tragically a young man lost his life. I don’t know whether that means it’s the assistant coach, or the trainer, or the head coach, or the athletic director, or the president of the university. I mean, at this point we don’t know where the buck stops. But we’re going to find out." (link)
Vanderbilt releases a statement in follow-up to reports of inner-university fundraising policies that put athletics at a disadvantage & former FB student-athletes speaking out on a lack of commitment to improving facilities in Nashville. In part, "We will continue to invest in our student athletes and as we contemplate a capital campaign for the university, athletics will be a significant part and will include efforts to raise funds for improvements to athletics programs and facilities, including the football stadium." (link)
A trio of Wall Street Journal headliners ink on the role of Strength & Conditioning coaches in college athletics & their increasingly important role as few others within a department interface more with student-athletes. Earnings context: "In 2017, 42 football strength coaches earned $200,000 per year or more and nine earned $400,000 per year or more." Former Colorado/UCLA/Washington FB HC Neuheisel notes the "fiefdom" within S&C circles & how "They get indoctrinated into this ‘head coach of the off-season’ society, and then the strength coach basically hands the team over to the head coach." However, the growing list of critical health issues on the watch of S&C staffs continues to grow at an alarming rate. (link); NYT's Schonbrun on the same topic, gets comments from a handful of S&C staffers around the nation. These from former NC State Director Alejo, "You are a little bit beholden (to the head coach). I think there’s some conflict of interest. There should be a buffer there. […] I don’t know any strength coach that can do whatever they want, whenever they want. Somebody is signing off — a coach, an administrator, someone along the line. Yet we don’t often see those names, ever. The Maryland case is no exception. We see a symptom. We see a symptom of a flawed system." More. (link)
New Kansas boss Long indicates the Jayhawks are still "processing" the previously reported apparel extension with Adidas. Long: "We’re very optimistic that we’ll finalize everything soon." Long also added context to the hire of new Senior Assoc. AD for FB Administration Vollmar, "It’s our largest program. It’s certainly one that has the opportunity to generate the most revenue. We need to invest in our biggest engine, so to speak. […] If we can bring football along, we will have the best of both worlds. I am one of those who believe you can be successful in both football and basketball. They are not mutually exclusive, and I believe that. We’re working really hard to make sure we can bring football to that level." (link)
N.C. State AD Yow, North Carolina's Cunningham & Duke's AD White were all on stage earlier this week as part of WRAL's Fan Town Hall. I'll watch the whole hour segment today & report back tomorrow, but Pack Insider did us a solid by recapping some of Yow's key comments. Most notably, it sounds like Yow is not ready to talk about succession plans yet, might by the middle of the winter or sometime next spring. Asks of the new MBB rule changes, "What about the players that aren't elite?" Interested in beer & wine sales at sporting evens, but points to state laws standing in the way a bit right now. Reiterates the value of the student-athlete experience to those who aren't at the "top of the pyramid" & for those in that cohort college athletics can be a key vehicle to grow their personal brands. More tomorrow. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Chances are you haven't heard of GradTransferTracker.com, but chances are you'll bookmark it starting now. The Athletic's Auerbach on the passion project of Syracuse fan Parrotte, who looks like the most reliable aggregator of all MBB & FB grad transfer moves around the nation. Parrotte: "I’m providing a free service. It’s kind of like a public utility. … It’s really a solo effort, and I enjoy it. It’s a natural curiosity of what’s going on and how the trends are going. And it’s honestly really satisfying to share it." (link); Continuing on the topic, Auerbach & peer Olson pen specifically on graduate quarterback transfers in FB as 24 situations highlight the FBS preseason. Auerbach & Olson write on the difficulty in projecting production, challenges of fit & more. Long read, but pretty interesting. (link)

New Ball State AD Goetz on the benefits of having been a HC (Women's Soccer at Missouri-St. Louis - DII) for a number of years before transitioning into administration, "You don’t have to have been a coach to be in administration but I really rely on that experience and I think it allows me to connect differently with coaches because I’ve been in their shoes. You get such a wide array of experiences; you’re exposed to different leadership styles and different institutions and different situations and you take all those experiences with you." On her early outlook in Muncie, "We’ve had some great moments of success but we can make strides in that area. I think we’re poised to make strides in that area. That’s about getting the right leaders in the right places and building a culture of success that’s sustainable." (link)
Fresno State boss Tumey turns to former Auburn Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Jenkins as his new Interim Deputy AD. Jenkins' interim appointment can last up to one year, at which point a formal hiring process would have to be undertaken to make the move permanent. Tumey says Jenkins will oversee all internal aspects of the department, also, "I feel Meredith will be a great contributor to the experience that our students will have here at Fresno State. I’ll also say for me, with the recommendations that she has received from Auburn and the understanding of her merits and her contributions to the university, we feel very confident and very happy that she is joining us." (link)
USA Today's Schrotenboer & Berkowitz review what we know & what we don't about the financial situations at Army, Navy & Air Force. The pair note how all three have widely refused to provide documentation to date on coaching pay rates, especially for revenue sports, or, in Navy's case, basically any info on revenues & expenses. Specifically, "No other athletics department has been allowed to be as secretive about its business affairs as Navy's has the last several years [...] changes at Air Force and Army show they are following Navy’s path to privacy in sports business — boosted by acts of Congress that authorized their athletic business operations to be private non-profit organizations." Former U.S. Army Secretary & former New York congressman McHugh was behind some of the legislation, but says it wasn't meant to "shield information from the public." Former Air Force AD Knowlton: "The reason that each of the academies did it really lies in the fact that the cost of athletics is going up at a much faster rate than the government could support." More, including a number of experts taking shots at the legality of the lack of transparency. (link)
Facility Notes: Weber State announces plans to add a new 27,000 square foot building to the north end of Stewart Stadium to feature a number of FB upgrades (strength & conditioning area, locker room, etc.), as well as a new plaza & gateway for the venue. Completion expected by the '19 season. (link); Miami (FL) FB officially held its first practice in the new Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility. Canes AD James: "Thank you to all who made this possible.....but we are not done yet." (link); UCLA opened its new Wallis Annenberg Stadium with a thrilling last-second win by Women's Soccer over Long Beach State. (link, link); A couple of pics of the new court & video boards inside Western Kentucky's Diddle Arena. (link); Also, updated video renderings of Florida Atlantic's Schmidt Academic & Athletic Excellence Complex. (link)
Flo/Pac-12/ESPN: Good read from SI's Feldman on the growing number of OTT platforms that feature college athletics programming & the growing cost being passed along to fans. In addition to the big boys, outlets like FloSports, DAZN, Stadium & B/R Live are likely to become even more synonymous to the sports fan. Thesis: "Everyone agrees that this proliferation of competitors can’t continue. Consolidation will eventually come. Until then, one winner is clear: non-sports fans, as they decreasingly subsidize our sports obsession. But for the rest of us? Maybe the cable bundle doesn’t sound so bad after all." (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner notes there's no update on U-verse negotiations for the Pac-12 Networks even after Prez Shuken said it would only be a matter of days after the league's media event some weeks ago. (link); ESPN boss Pitaro says the ACC Network linear launch is right on schedule, notes the importance of ESPN+ all the way up the Disney chain of command, focused on increasing reach & subscribers, believes the Worldwide Leader will continue working with the NFL in a longterm rights fashion. Pitaro also mentioned that eSports is not a fad & that ESPNews could start featuring more gambling programming. (link, link, link)
More Personnel: Northern Illinois AD Frazier promotes Senior Assoc. AD Cheney to Executive Assoc. AD and Stocksdale gets Assoc. AD title. (link); Oklahoma adds Holy Cross Assoc. AD for Student-Development Dawkins as Senior Assoc. AD. (link); Drake Assoc. AD for External Affairs Haskin joins the staff at LSU as Asst. AD for Marketing. (link); Mississippi State Prez Keenum has been selected as chair of the CFP Board of Managers. (link); NC State and MBB HC Keatts are negotiating a new contract, current deal worth $2.3M per and ends in 2023-24. (link); William & Mary Women's Tennis HC Thomson steps down to take an AHC role with North Carolina. (link); New Mexico State Assoc. Professor and Accounting/Info. Systems Department Head Melendrez named as the school's new FAR, replacing recently retired economics professor Peach. (link); Dartmouth adds two females to its FB interns cohort during preseason camp. (link)
Furman AD Buddie was a member of the New York Yankees' 1998 World Series championship team & will be on the field at Yankee Stadium today as the organization celebrates the '98 squad. Buddie on what he learned under former Yanks manager Torre & how it applies to his leadership role in Greenville, "I think back to how he treated people and how he communicated with people, and those are some things that I try to bring to my office. It’s about having integrity, everybody knowing what they're role is, being held accountable to do that role and really staying humble and staying hungry. […] If I had been a 25-game winner, I could’ve done pretty much anything I wanted, and nobody would've had a problem with it. But when you're an average Major-League talent, you've got to do everything the right way and work hard. Those are things I remembered as I started my career in athletics administration. There really is not a shortcut." (link)

The New Mexico Board of Regents votes to keep Women's Diving, but again decides to discontinue Men's Soccer, Beach Volleyball, as well as Men's & Women's Skiing. Lobos AD Nuñez presented for 40 minutes, "The UNM athletic department has had a problem. We don’t have the money to sufficiently fund the sports we currently sponsor. […] Travel for our student-athletes, travel for recruiting, equipment, scholarship costs, student-athlete medical expenses, insurances, cost of living — they all continue to go up while our budgets remain stagnant." The meeting lasted four & a half hours, featured 53 speakers. (link)
Virginia AD Williams commends former UVA Prez Sullivan for including then-Prez-elect Ryan during Williams' interview process. On Ryan: "He’s a sports fan. He’s a runner. He watches sports and already has several of our sporting events on his calendar. I think he’ll be another great supporter of athletics. He’s already said to me, 'Let me help with fundraising.' He’s seen the plans. He knows what we need." Williams with an interesting perspective on facilities for the Cavs: "What we’re doing at Virginia is not an arms race. I was part of an arms race at Georgia and an arms race is when you have what you need and you continue to build because competitors are doing that. For us, our construction is to meet a need, not just for recruiting but for our current student-athletes. Five years from now, I hope we have a football operations center and I hope we have an Olympic sports operation center." (link)
So, Charlotte AD Hill grew a beard this summer while on his honeymoon & after an impromptu fundraising push by his new wife generated nearly $4K, Hill is keeping the beard through mid-October. Some 49er fans say it makes Hill look like university mascot Norm The Niner. Serious question (kinda), which AD around the nation could raise the most money by having the guts to do something crazy with their hair? Innovative fundraising! (link)
CBSSports' Dodd: "How to fix a college football game and influence its outcome -- in four steps." Dodd had former Colombo crime family boss Franzese break it down: 1) Start with an athlete who gets "upside down" -- loses a lot of money with a bookie; 2) Present a way for them to get even: Shave points; 3) Attempt to get in the pocket of the referees officiating the game; and, 4) Be smart with your bets. Franzese: "The only time something happens is when somebody gets in trouble. [That's] when somebody talks. A player gets stupid." (link); Part eight of ESPN's special series on the future of sports betting focuses on the reality of nationwide sports betting being legal in the next three years. Also delves into what it will take to get Congress involved in the process. Lays out details of an "entirely fictional, yet possible, near-future scandal" that could prompt Congress to act. (link)
Nebraska has started pushing scholarship money over to campus & a $5M Husker Scholars gift will go toward high school students in the state to have access to a degree in Lincoln. The Huskers generated $136.6M last year & university AVC for Academic Services & Enrollment Management Williams notes, "Each year, there are about 3,300 Nebraskans who go out of state to go to college. When I look at where they are going, they are attending campuses that are similar to us." (link)
Also Noticed: Violations committed by former MBB AC Lilavois have landed the Louisiana Monroe program with a handful of penalties from the NCAA Division I COI, including public reprimand and censure, two years of probation and a financial hit. None of the penalties impact student-athlete or team eligibility. (link); Penn State has asked that two of the counts (defamation and false light) brought against the school by former Gymnastics HC Thompson be dropped from his lawsuit. (link); Former Rutgers Swimming & Diving HC Martin claims her termination had to do with implicit gender bias, given that the complaints against her were filed with the athletic department only six days before her dismissal. (link); Akron will open three esports facilities to accommodate varsity, club and recreational gamers. (link); Tennessee's Alcohol Policy Task Force could help get the rules changed to allow alcohol sales at certain on-campus events. (link); The canceled 2017 Georgia Tech-UCF FB game has been rescheduled for 2022, still in Orlando. (link); North Carolina FB will host Wofford in 2021 and James Madison in 2025, with $400K and $500K guarantees, respectively. (link); "Conference USA plans to air every single game this season on either traditional linear television or via streaming and social media." All the ESPNs, beIN Sports, Stadium, CBS Sports Network, Facebook and others included on the list. (link); Northern Kentucky MBB showing signs of improved attendance numbers. Last season NKU was one of 18 programs to see a bump of 1K+ year-over-year. Fan and student attendance has doubled since 2014-15. (link
