(Listen) The Dynamic Leadership Podcast: UMBC’s Ryan Odom
Former Fresno State AD Bartko has filed a 13-page claim alleging he was let go as a result of "whisper campaign" conducted by Prez Castro which "like a stone thrown into a pond...caused a ripple effect that continues to cause damage" to Bartko's reputation. The claim, which seeks $3M in damages, also accuses VP Adishian-Astone and interim AD Robertello of undermining Bartko by privately telling donors and a prominent community member that Bartko "was going to get fired because he was an alcoholic and wasn't doing his job." Bartko attorney Dunn wants the court to determine whether Bartko's $75K severance is valid, arguing: "Fresno State publicly released documents suggesting that Mr. Bartko voluntarily and thoughtfully resigned and released any claims against the University. For a release of a claim to be valid, the release must be knowing and voluntary and signed without duress." Bartko also says Castro and Adishian-Astone were upset with him for hiring FB HC Tedford without consulting them about the terms of Tedford's contract. (link)
Maryland held a press conference yesterday to address the passing of FB student-athlete McNair, which occurred a couple of weeks after he was hospitalized after a team workout. Executive AD Evans says the conditioning session was a "baseline conditioning activity" & the student-athletes involved had plenty of water on hand to keep hydrated in the 80-degree weather. "Outside constituents" are aiding the Terps with a look at how the situation was handled. Evans: "We understand and recognize that when a young individual, especially an athlete, has an untimely and unexpected death, there are a lot of questions. I want you to know that these situations are ones that are unexpected, that we don’t look to be a part of what we do every day. And as you might expect, we have been looking into this situation since Jordan was hospitalized." (link); Here's video of the presser. (link)
Maine has tapped Turnkey Search and Managing Director/former Boston College and Villanova AD DeFilippo to assist in its AD search. DeFilippo is on campus this week meeting with the school's 14-member search committee, HR VP Lindstrom, athletic department members and Prez Hunter. The search committee will make a recommendation to incoming Prez Ferrini-Mundy with the goal of having a new AD in place on or before September 1. (link)
Interim Kansas AD Lester yesterday identified his primary duty in the interim role as maintaining internal focus while effectively communicating externally to KU fans and supporters. He added: "I just try to tighten things up so when the next athletic director comes in, there is an order and a direction for him to follow. Then, there will be a momentum of his or her hiring that we want to build on." Lester also acknowledged former AD Zenger, calling him a "personal friend and an unbelievable colleague," but noted that "you just have to put all that aside and focus on the job at hand. ... There’s a lot of student-athletes and coaches who need attention to know that things are stable. The best part of my job is I get up every day and come to work at a great university with great people, and we’ve got great coaches and great student-athletes." Meanwhile, Lester has plenty to focus on in terms of facilities projects, including a proposed $350M FB stadium, "so that when the new AD arrives, I can show him here's where we are, and then he or she can determine what to do going forward." (link)
Auburn AD Greene discusses a wide range of topics with, including progress toward building a new FB-only complex, about which he has had discussions with HC Malzahn. "I certainly understand we need to get people excited about it so we can raise enough money to actually build something...but we need to make sure that we keep on checking the pulse of the industry and, as the landscapes shift, we want to be prepared to move in the directions that we feel like we need to." Greene goes on to acknowledge that while it's imperative to deliver the "Auburn experience" to student-athletes across the board, FB success increases the opportunities for department-wide enhancements. "So, yes, there will be a focus on football. There has to be a focus on football if we want to serve our other sports and do it to the best of our ability." Regarding what he's learned so far at Auburn, Greene cites the university's commitment to developing "Auburn men and women," adding: "I think it's a really great fit for someone of my profile to be down here at Auburn. I'm looking forward to serving this department and this university, and hopefully be having great things to come in the future." Full interview. (link)
UTEP AD Senter this week briefed the media on a number of initiatives, including the launch of the 30-member UTEP Fan Council which met earlier this month to discuss the top ten issues raised at town hall meetings. Topics ranged from tailgating improvements and increased student engagement to adding Baseball and Men's Soccer and building a Spanish-speaking fan base. One step UTEP has taken to improve FB game experiences for fans is the addition of Fan Fest, a free, family-friendly event with food, music, entertainment and kid-friendly games. In addition, the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Miner Kids' Club now includes a free membership option courtesy of FirstLight. Free membership packages include admission to all Olympic sporting events and access to all free events, such as FB Fan Day and the Orange & White BB scrimmage. Gameday memberships, which include admission to FB, WBB and MBB are also available for $30. Full rundown inside. (link)
News & Observer columnist DeCock discusses the importance of the ACC Network as it relates to the ACC's upward mobility among Power 5 revenue earners. First, DeCock points out the network's importance to Disney and ESPN, citing the former's negotiation with cable provider Altice which included the network's inclusion as a requirement in any new deal. DeCock next submits that it's going to be "almost impossible" for the ACC, which ranks fifth among the Power 5 leagues in per-team revenue, to overtake the SEC and B1G networks considering their head starts, but "the ACC is counting on network revenue -- which even in its least optimistic projections should be at least $10M per year, once the network is up and running -- to move it past the Pac-12 and even with the Big 12." Meanwhile, the better the network does, "the more ESPN's deal with the ACC essentially pays for itself," an especially important component considering the national trend toward alternatives to cable and the $236M ESPN owes the ACC for 2017. Puma has added two big (and reportedly expensive) names to its roster of pro athletes in former Duke MBB student-athlete Bagley III and Manchester United forward Lukaku. Bagley's five-year deal is reported to be Puma's largest rookie shoe deal since Kevin Durant's deal with Nike while Lukaku's is one of the "biggest in soccer history," according to ESPN's Rovell. Durant's initial Nike deal was for seven years, $60M and his second could be worth up to $300M over 10 years. Bagley would be the first NBA player to sign with Puma since Vince Carter in 1998. Carter eventually stopped wearing the shoes due to discomfort and never developed a signature shoe with the company. He ended up paying Puma $13.5M after the company filed a breach of contract suit. Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy tweeted the eye-rolling emoji, followed by the thinking man emoji, which many assume are in response to Pokes AD Holder's comments on Wednesday that he thinks Gundy could be recruiting better. (link); SportsSource Analytics lays two graphics side-by-side that show the hometowns of OSU signees for the last two classes against the hometowns of all 4- and 5-star recruits over those two years. Fox News host Sean Hannity's son, Patrick, is a redshirt freshman on the Wake Forest Men's Tennis team which captured the school's first NCAA Title in the sport just a week before getting invited to the White House to celebrate the occasion. The elder Hannity, no doubt, played a role in getting the Demon Deacons on the grounds so quickly, as visits to the WH by championship teams across all leagues have become a discussion topic of late. President Trump quipped that the team could use the White House tennis court for practice and wanted to see which student-athlete has the biggest serve. (link)
Oklahoma: A new Softball home to the tune of $22M could be on the horizon for the Sooners. OU Board of Regents will vote on the measure next Tuesday, which will replace current plans to renovate existing Marita Hynes Field as leadership has decided "the long-range vision for the existing facility was not best served investing further in the current location." (link); A slew of administrative & staff leaders are due for pay raises in Norman led by Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Development Ludvigson, who is due to go from $115K to $140K "based on merit and increased responsibilities." (link); It appears Florida first offered then-UCF & current Nebraska FB HC Frost the same gig with the Gators, but that Frost turned it down because UF wouldn't allow him to bring his entire staff. (link); Troy AD McClain goes with former student-athlete and AC Vargas to lead the Trojans' Men's Tennis team. Vargas leaves his post as HC at Radford after just a year to return to his alma mater. (link); With his latest raise and extension (through 2022), Nebraska Volleyball HC Cook brings in $675K, up from the $600K he made last season when the Huskers claimed the national title. (link)
Listen: James Madison AD Bourne updates from Harrisonburg, says adding a Men's LAX program, which would be well-positioned for high-level success, "is not a matter of 'want', it's a matter of reality of fact. The fact is if we add another Men's program, we would have to balance out with another team or team and a half of females." Construction on the FB practice facility is moving forward, but has been delayed a bit with lots of rain. Bourne also says a unanimous belief within his peer group is, "change is coming." On the potential move to FBS, Bourne indicates it's a constant question on his mind & on the minds of other JMU leaders as they aim to always have the Dukes appropriately prepared for the coming industry shifts. New Transfer Rules: Portland AD Leykam to The Oregonian's Canzano, "Now you're not only recruiting prospective high school players, but you also have to recruit your own players. […] There's a real possibility that the mid-majors become farm clubs for the Power Five Conferences." (link); More from Florida AD Stricklin: "It was an archaic process. If a kid isn’t playing to their liking or not having a good experience, we certainly should not be in a position, as a school, to tell them where they can transfer. … When someone does feel the need to go somewhere else, they should have the opportunity to go where they think is best. This is a good move." FB HCs from around the nation also provide opinions with Texas Tech's Kingsbury pointing to a free agency model. (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner looks at highly-ranked FB prospects from the west coast & how the new regulations could impact the flow of talent, "The pool of players who could seek an opportunity to come home (into the conference) is greater than the pool of players who could opt to leave for home (depart the conference.)" (link)

The premium tailgate vertical continues to grow & this time its Colorado State selecting Tailgate Guys for its pregame needs. Rams AD Parker: "Hosting football games on campus for the first time in 50 years gave our great fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the pre- and postgame experience in more meaningful ways than ever before, and the partnership with a first-class organization like Tailgate Guys will enhance that experience for those who choose their services. It is one of numerous enhancements planned for 2018 that build off the momentum from last year's successful on-campus debut and inspired by feedback from a comprehensive survey of season ticket holders after last season." (link)
More Media Notes: In a bit of a bombshell, the New York Yankees are reportedly considering buying YES Network back from Fox if a sale goes through that includes the regional sports networks. Fox currently owns 80% of YES, which is believed to be the top valued RSN in Fox's portfolio. (link); The Wall Street Journal goes deeper on the potential of the RSNs being a sticking point for federal regulators in the Disney/Comcast proposals for Fox. Either suitor winning the RSNs could create an unfair competitive marketplace given their currents sports holdings. For Disney, "The addition of Fox’s 22 regional channels could give it tremendous clout both locally and nationally with pay-TV distributors, sports leagues and advertisers." (link); Forgotten 5's Lewis pens on the potential exit of, which he believes is a good thing if ESPN doesn't allow simple scoreboard feeds to be used to show some Conference USA games.
