In a podcast with SB Nation's Underdog Dynasty, Conference USA Commish MacLeod indicates there's additional media partner announcements coming later this month or early next & that ESPN is still in the mix. Sounds like league members have agreed to enhance their production execution for contests on C-USA TV. MacLeod also brushes off the AAC's 'Power 6' branding efforts, says the peer conference is still squarely part of the 'Group of 5.' Twenty-eight minute listen. (link)
More for those of you interested in the Fresno State AD opening. This time it's the Fresno Bee's White who doesn't hold back: "One team conference championship in the 20-team bunch. When you hire an athletic director to get this mass-scale rebuild under way, you might want to ask how they’re going to get Fresno State off the wrong side of the linescore. You do plan on hiring an athletic director, right? Please tell us that you’re going to do something about this, because we are exhausted with this total lack of winning enough games to merit postseason bunting. ... So, please, when you finally get around to hiring an athletic director, don’t pretend just any glad-hander will do. Your athletic department needs a complete makeover, and it needs it two years ago. Good luck finding the qualified person for that job at the prices you’re willing to pay." (link)
Another weekend means another entry from Lawrence Journal-World editor Lawhorn on the state of Kansas Athletics. Lawhorn's most recent angle looks at the possibility of conference realignment & if KU could be left on the outside looking in due to FB's struggles. Compares the budget situations of UConn & Ohio as examples of the other side of the 'Power 5' tracks. TV revenues are obviously one point of major differentiation, as are the amount of student fees needed to make the money magic work (KU = $300K, UConn = $8.2M, Ohio = $17.7M). Jayhawks AD Zenger: "You often find enormous student fees at those schools because those students want so badly to have what we have. You will find extreme hunger and sacrifice to get what we have." Cal professor emeritus Sperber believes an expansion to the College Football Playoff - and the subsequent elimination of conference FB championship games - or a major change to rights fees could be bad news for Kansas. (link)

Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak with thoughts on ESPN, ACC & FOX Sports lining out timeslots & networks for their early-season FB slates. Wonders if TCU-Ohio State on September 15th for ABC was chosen over USC-Texas, "so was this the first choice of weeks by ESPN where they would pick first?" Further, "Did ESPN manage to get the top two Big 12 choices on 9/15, meaning they could air USC vs. Texas on ABC leading into this one, or on ESPN?  This isn't unheard of." More as nobody gets in the TV weeds like Sarzyniak & this is another informative entry. (link)

Longtime Saint Joseph's AD DiJulia delivered the university's commencement address on his way out, after leading the Hawks for 35 years. DiJulia focused on the need for teamwork in all walks of life, "...it’s toughest to go it alone. [...] The choice is yours: spectator or impact player? Drain or fountain?" Those around the SJU department note DiJulia's "legacy of being present." Asst. Director of Athletic Communications Greenwich: "He just appears. He might have some way he can teleport." Former Track & Cross Country HC Quinn: "Under Don, every sport was the sport. Even the kids picked up on that." More. (link)
espnW's Davidson: "Why the SCOTUS betting decision could be good for women's sports." Thesis: "As more gamblers who are not necessarily fans enter the sphere of women's sports, more gamblers might turn into viewers and fans. […] In January, The Times (U.K.) reported that betting on women's soccer in the U.K., where sports gambling is much more established and sophisticated than we can expect in the immediate future stateside, has more than doubled in the past two years. Meanwhile, viewership of the England women's national team has continued to grow. According to a separate report, a record audience of 4 million viewers watched the Lionesses eliminated in the Euro 2017 semifinal in August." (link)
The Athletic's Vecenie writes on trends within NBA player contracts that include growing guarantees for second round draft choices, which could serve as supporting evidence for some student-athletes to make the jump to the pros even if they aren't selected in Round One. "With the NBA’s salary cap set to reach $101 million next season, teams are basically giving up about 1.4 percent of their salary cap to take fliers on potentially useful players. Because of that, NBA teams have increasingly realized how worthwhile it is to sign second-round picks long-term (three-year deals are the most common). Even if they end up not working out — and they often don’t — it’s such a small percentage of their cap that it rarely affects teams’ long-term maneuverability. The potential benefits far outweigh the costs for NBA teams in how they utilize their second-rounders, making it a positive expected value equation for them." In the '14 Draft, just eight of 22 second rounders who played college ball got a multi-year deal with at least $1M guaranteed. Last year, 13 of 23 got a minimum of $2M guaranteed. Lots more. Interesting read that would certainly seem to have an impact on student-athletes heading to the pros. (link)
Another nice piece of analysis from The Athletic for college hoops, this one on the surging importance of social media savvy for prospective student-athletes. Short form video is king, whether it's via Instagram or YouTube & media brands like Overtime & Ballislife are taking full advantage. In some ways it's made the recruiting game easier for coaches, but there's certainly a potential downside, as well. Gate City HS (VA) 20-year HC Vermillion: "I’ve not been impressed with some of the things I’ve seen with some of these kids with big social-media numbers. They play no defense, they shoot bad shots. When individual goals outweigh team goals it’s a disgrace to the game ... But it can be a steroid. If you get a viral dunk, that certainly has an impact on how you play ... Going viral, it’s an element of the game that 10 years ago you didn’t have to deal with." (link)
It's Personnel: Sounds like the NHL's New York Rangers will hired Boston U. Men's Hockey HC Quinn to take over the bench. Deal reported to be five years & $12.5M. (link); Florida Atlantic AD White will hire a new Women's Golf HC. (link); Abilene Christian AD De Leon will do the same for his Baseball program. (link)
Iowa State AD Pollard believes the 2018-19 campaign could be one of the best in history across the board for the Cyclones, "Coming out of last fall, we were 17th in the country in the all-sports standings. And historically, basketball and wrestling have been our strengths, but this year that wasn’t the case. If we can have another fall like we had, which I think we will, and then we couple that with basketball and wrestling getting back to where they normally are, we have the potential to really have a top 15 or top 10 year in the country overall. That would be phenomenal." Also, Pollard on FB's promise, "We will probably go into the fall ranked in the preseason – there are going to be a lot of expectations. Cyclone fans have waited many, many years for this type of an environment. Let’s enjoy it." (link)
WDRB's Bozich believes clarity that former Louisville AD Jurich exited "without cause" is more important than the $7M+ settlement he'll receive. Bozich: "Tom Jurich will be back — if he wants to be back.  The man is about two months from his 62nd birthday, but 62 is the new 42 in the athletic administration game, especially when you have the energy, imagination and resume of a forceful leader  like Jurich. He’ll find a school that has lost its football glory and make it glorious again. There are always several of those jobs out there, with massive football stadium seats and suites to fill and national championships to chase. Or he’ll find a behind-the-times campus eager to pursue king-sized athletic dreams. Jurich will get the construction cranes and victory parades humming — just the way he did at Louisville. It is Jurich’s call now." Bozich continues, goes as far to say Jurich could be in the mix as a conference Commissioner one day. Hum. (link)
Overall donations to the Razorback Foundation at Arkansas dipped from $48.9M in FY16 to $36.5M in FY17. Razorback Foundation Executive Director & General Counsel Varady spins the numbers as fewer, but bigger in FY16, due to the major renovation to Razorback Stadium & more, but smaller in FY17. Of the FY17 total, $28.5M went directly to athletics for support. Varady's pay was $230,011, also says he & his team continue to monitor the impact of tax law changes. More, including funds pushed to HCs. (link)
Looks like we're going to see an official announcement tomorrow on the Southern-Under Armour tie-up. The Advocate confirms its earlier reporting that the deal will cover the entire university, including the band & cheerleaders. The guts of execution will run through BSN Sports as part of its Collegiate Select program. (link)
Also Noticed: Connecticut Governor Malloy says he's prepared to have a special session to make decisions on sports gambling as quickly as possible. (link); ESPN's Purdum: "I can't tell if the sports leagues and/or politicians who are going around expressing concern about betting on minor league baseball and high school sports are ignorant on the issue or are simply being disingenuous." (link); Notable journalist Calkins set to exit the Commercial Appeal in Memphis.
