(Read) Experts’ Roundtable: Evolution Of Instagram
Delaware State has announced DII Texas A&M-Kingsville boss Gines as its next AD. DSU Interim Prez Mishoe: "In hiring Dr. Scott Gines as the new DSU Director of Athletics, the institution has gained an executive with a diverse and proven background in overseeing intercollegiate sports departments as well as fundraising. We have high hopes and expectations for the University’s Athletics Department under his capable leadership." While at TAMKU, Gines spearheaded the school's comprehensive gender equity plan and launched Women's Tennis, Golf and Beach Volleyball, nearly doubling women's participation in athletics. Gines: "As a Land Grant, flagship HBCU in a capital city, DSU can become a Division I prototype for classroom, community and competitive success. I am moved by President Mishoe’s passion and vision for DSU. She embraces the value of successful college athletics and how it can positively impact campus and community culture." (link)
Texas AD Del Conte has announced two new high-level hires in former Nebraska AD Eichorst and TCU Assoc. AD for Marketing and Licensing Martin. Martin will oversee external matters, such as marketing, media relations and UT's relationship with the Longhorn Network and IMG while Eichorst will handle internal matters, including oversight of the business office, HR and policy and procedure. In Martin, with whom Del Conte worked at TCU, the Texas AD says he has someone "who knows what I want," especially as it pertains to enhancing the gameday experience. "I know what we did at TCU. Can we do that on a grander scale at Texas?" The hires are part of an overall restructuring that includes transitioning longtime administrator Plonsky to a new role as Del Conte's "chief of staff," with duties that will include oversight of all student services, such as academic support and nutrition. The restructuring will also result in roughly 44 full-time positions within the department being laid off and not replaced, reducing the number of full-time staffers from 429 to 385. For comparison, UT and Oklahoma have roughly the same number of student-athletes, but OU has 268 full-time staff members. (link, link)
Outgoing NCAA EVP Luck Q&As with's Dodd on a number of key issues facing college athletics. On sports gambling & the current penalty system for student-athletes, says membership "is going to want us to look at the severity of that, create some sort of sliding scale or whatever." Also, "Some of the possibilities are angst-producing. Others aren't. We had our share over the years of point-shaving cases. They seem to have diminished. We have a good bit of education about getting in hock to a bookie. … I'm not too frightened by it. It's the law of the land." Ends with what the industry could look like five to ten years down to road, "Even after the O'Bannon case and Judge Wilken, the cost of attendance was implemented. I'm not sure that's really changed the value of college athletes and how people view them. It's got enduring qualities. Change will be made, but I don't know if I see seismic change that we don't recognize college athletics." (link)
A former UConn MBB AC met with individuals tied to the MBB-FBI developments in July of last year. Huskies Assoc. AD for Compliance Fiorvanti in an email to the NCAA last October, "...based on our review of the information available to us at this time, we have concluded that there is no information to suggest the coach was involved, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving or offering to give any financial aid or other benefits to a prospective student athlete or friends and relatives of a prospective student athlete." No word on which former AC was involved. (link)
Former Syracuse AD Gross received a lump sum of $675K when he left the university in 2016 to become AD at Cal State Los Angeles (DII). Gross' move came after serving as SVP & Special Assistant to the Chancellor for a year, a role in which he was making the same money as when he was AD of the Orange, though some on campus questioned what his actual role entailed. Gross: "If I wanted to (be at Syracuse), I could be. I had the opportunity to stay there as long as I want. As (Chancellor Kent Syverud) said, 'Daryl, as long as I'm here, you can be here with me, as long as you want to.'" This info & more comes from a deposition connected to a gender discrimination & sexual harassment lawsuit at Cal State LA. Cuse's statement on the lump amount paid to Gross, "His decision to leave the university on his own accord substantially reduced the university's financial obligations." (link)
Former Louisville AD Jurich back in the media spotlight, touches on a handful of pertinent questions, like his potential candidacy at USF, "I'm never going to say never to anything, but we really haven't given much thought to anything. […] I'm not adding to (the speculation). I’m not talking to anybody. ... We really haven't made our next plans. We're listening, talking to people (about) a lot of things – things that are off the charts, things that are on the charts. But it's fun to kind of recreate yourself, reinvent yourself, look at a new chapter. We might choose to do nothing. That might be one of the alternatives, too, just enjoy the grandkids. But we have a lot left in this tank." Further, Jurich says he's not thinking too much about the past, solely focused on what might be next, believes his loyalty to former Cards MBB HC Pitino could have been his downfall, doesn't think Baseball HC McDonnell really considered leaving for Mississippi State, more. (link, link)
Media Deals: Conference USA inks a new agreement with ESPN that will see 175+ contests broadcast exclusively on ESPN3 & ESPN+. ESPN EVP of Programming & Scheduling Magnus: "We are thrilled to grow our relationship with Conference USA and have its 14 member institutions as part of the impressive digital lineup, which now features more games from the conference than any other network, including a significant number of postseason games." No financial dynamics reported. (link); Amazon has scooped up exclusivity to 20 Premier League games to air in the UK through Amazon Prime in a new multi-year pact. Interesting, the Premier League's overall TV rights deals brought in slightly less total revenue this time around. No word on who will actually produce the matches. (link); Former IMG boss & current Bruin Sports Capital Founder & CEO Pyne, "Eventually somebody’s going to take a big bet on a new platform and it’s going to be a loss leader that drives awareness. It worked for CBS, it works for Fox, and some day it’s going to work for a new media platform." Bruin's portfolio includes Italian sports streaming company Deltatre. (link)

Former UCLA MBB HC & high-profile TV analyst Lavin, NCAA SVP of Championships & SWA Comstock, former UCLA MBB stand-out & NBA HC Watson, as well as former NBA star Richardson will be among those who speak. Themes of note: #GreenGames, how to support sustainable tailgating, Fan Culture: Leveraging New Power, Empathy, Equity & Inclusion to Drive a Sports Sustainability Movement. Knight Commission leaders Cartwright & Duncan pen for the Chronicle of Higher Education, "The NCAA Is Too Far Gone for Incremental Reform." Thesis: "We believe the NCAA can only become a true leadership organization, and fulfill its responsibility to administer this 'public trust,' if its governing board and the Division I Board of Directors are controlled by a majority of independent appointees, much as is the case with many corporate and nonprofit boards. […] This is the moment of opportunity to restore public faith in the NCAA’s ability to be an effective steward of big-money college sports. Business as usual just won’t cut it anymore." The pair point to the need for HC pay to be fully transparent on income earned from outside university sources, push for "an independent infractions-and-enforcement process for cases of major and complex violations," and ask, "If the NCAA fails to clean up men’s basketball now, when will it do so?" More. (link)
Kentucky AD Barnhart shares his thoughts on what he would change about FB if he were examining the game strictly as a fan, saying while he appreciates that being on offense is "cool" he still likes to "see games where some team can make a stop. Flipping the field and doing those types of things. From a fan's perspective, I would like to see some things that give the defense the chance to change the score" of the game. Meanwhile, Barnhart acknowledged that kickoffs are dangerous due to the "high rate of speed" and subsequent collisions but stopped short of calling for their outright elimination, opting instead to say he prefers whatever will increase participation in the game. "Participation in the game is under attack, and I would be for whatever moves people to participate in football. ... I go back to my rights and responsibilities. You have the right to choose to play the game. Once you choose, you follow the responsibilities. But we have a responsibility to keep the game safe, and if this is one of those rules that keeps the game safe, then I'm good with that." (link)
The time to invest in Florida Atlantic stock is now, according to AD White, who told a group of FAU supporters at the first stop of the "Winning in Paradise" tour that "we're in a place with tremendous potential and, more importantly, tremendous ambition." White credits former AD Chun for putting the pieces in place, especially with the hire of FB HC Kiffin, whose team won its last ten games en route to an 11-3 season last year. While FAU also experienced a high level of success in other sports, including baseball, White knows that attention will be focused on FAU FB for the upcoming season, with four games being aired on national TV, including the September 1 opener against Oklahoma. "Not only nationally, but locally, we’ve become more and more relevant. Now is the time to capitalize on that. The future is now and across the board, we want to be heavily engaged in the community and that’s gonna help us get more people in the stands at games, raise the profile of the athletic department, and raise the profile of the university." (link)
UT San Antonio AD Campos goes with former New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs staffer Douglass as the new Exec. Sr. Assoc. AD for External Affairs for the Roadrunners. Campos: "We are elated to welcome Katie Douglass to the Roadrunner family. Katie's candidacy rose to top because of her expansive experience in working with a wide variety of constituents, her political acumen and her experience as a vice president of operations for a multimillion-dollar corporation." Douglass, who comes to UTSA most recently from the human performance company EXOS, will "lead and coordinate responsibilities for the external affairs staff, oversee the department's community relations program, develop relationships with public officials and business leaders and direct the coordination of faculty/staff, political and alumni relations for the department." (link)
Former Oklahoma FB HC Stoops chats about his first year of retirement with The Oklahoman's Tramel. On why he made the move: "A lot of it, I wanted my own time. More than anything, I just wanted to own my own time. ... You're dealing with something all the time. And that was great. I loved it. But it was just enough for me. If I choose to go somewhere and do something, I want to be able to do it. I got to a point, at what age do you do it? Are you then capable of going where you want, when you want? You never know what's promised to you. I don't have anything wrong, it's just that I don't want to wait until I do." On the possibility he could step in front of the cameras: "I want to own my own time, and all of a sudden if I'm on TV, I'm traveling two days a week. So I don't know." Some good stories here. (link)

Georgia Tech launches a $125M capital campaign, 'Athletics Initiative 2020,' with $70M earmarked for revamp of Tech's Edge Center, headquarters for the athletic department. AD Stansbury: "We talk about athletics being the front porch of a university or an institution. Well, this building is our front porch, and so we feel that this is the kind of linchpin of what we’re going to look like for the next 20 years." The new digs would include space for Tech's notable Total Person Program, plenty of new office & meeting amenities, as well as premium seating for FB. The Yellow Jackets already have $28M committed. More Stansbury, "My goal is with this AI 2020 initiative is really to move us into a different quadrant. Say you’re (Nos.) 4, 5 or 6, well, when you have a good year, that means you’re 1, 2 or 3. So the idea is to move us into a different realm because of the resources we’ve got available." (link, link)
Pitt AD Lyke voices her concerns on the possibility of widespread legalized sports gambling, "We say things like, 'Just don't bet on (games).' But that's a pretty vanilla education program. We need to really heighten our awareness. We need to be scrutinizing people around the program, people asking lots of questions, who's hurt, who's not. Who our kids are leaving tickets to. The reality is I'm most concerned about the integrity of the game and the safety and well-being of our student-athletes and them not getting mixed up in things. [...] you have one kid who takes it and then they get sucked in, and then they get down money. I think it's out there. We'll just have to heighten our education and bring in some people who have had experience with it. They can hear first-hand how it can go wrong. Hopefully, we don't have to deal with it too much. But it's real. It's not a taboo topic." (link)
Summer has not proven to be an offseason for Western Illinois Interim AD Surprenant, who says she has "hit the ground running" in her first month with student-athletes returning for summer classes, moving forward with personnel hires and gearing up for fundraisers and the next athletic year. Not to mention, WIU is in the midst of several facilities upgrades, which Surprenant says will have student-athletes saying "wow" when they return to campus in the fall. Despite the interim tag, Surprenant maintains a long gaze toward WIU's future, with a special focus on helping Football, Women's Basketball and Women's Tennis making runs in the postseason. "We need to build on the successes we've had to get to the next level. Also, we’re in constant conversation on how we can improve the experience and well-being for our student-athletes, whether that’s facilities, experience or resources. Last year we set the bar high, we had a tremendous year, but we have to build from there." More from Surprenant. (link)
Troy set a school record for baseball attendance this year with 50,331 fans coming through the turnstiles at Riddle-Pace Field for an average of 1,623. The mark, set during Troy's 31 home games, was good for third in the Sun Belt (behind Louisiana and Coastal Carolina) and 40th nationally. Meanwhile, the Trojans enjoyed a surge of social media visitors, with 5.2M Twitter impressions from January 1-June 6 compared to 3.2M impressions last year, an increase of 62.5%. HC Smartt: "A huge thank you to our fans. The program established attendance records throughout the season. Riddle-Pace Field is a fan friendly venue and our players are thankful for the support. We all look forward to more record numbers in 2019." (link)

Author, Speaker and Corporate Trainer Axtell pens for the Harvard Business Review: "5 Common Complaints about Meetings and What to Do About Them." 1) One or two people dominate the conversation and no one does anything about it - as the meeting leader, remind the group you want broad participation, call on the quiet people and don't be afraid to tell the others they need to hold back; 2) My boss doesn't lead meetings effectively - offer to prepare the agenda for your boss or suggest someone more capable; 3) Most of our meetings are just passing along information that could easily be sent in an email. We don't talk about real issues - pull out a list of key topics around which to craft an agenda; 4) No one is paying attention because they're on their phones or laptops - set technology limits from the beginning; and 5) We keep having the same conversations because nothing gets done between meetings - make sure the is closure on each topic and next steps are decided before the meeting ends and send out summary emails from meetings. (link)
