D1.jobs: New opportunities below at San Diego State & Oregon. Post your team openings in the same space where thousands of leading administrators start their days! Click here to learn how.
Parker gets the nod to assist Air Force with its hire of a new AD. Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Silveria: "This new hiring process enables the Academy to attract talented, experienced applicants who will be compensated in a manner consistent with similar positions in the Mountain West Conference and enable enhanced development efforts, while maintaining the leadership and accountability we need in this position." The part about consistent compensation compared to others in the league is quite interesting. (link)
A trio of senior-level promotions at Duke includes Deputy AD for Administration & Legal Affairs/Chief of Staff King up to the Senior Deputy AD line. King also picks up sport administrator responsibilities of FB & will run the department alongside Senior Deputy AD Kennedy. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Jackson slides up to Deputy AD for MBB, Blue Devil Network & Digital Media. Assoc. AD for External Affairs Chase gets the Senior Assoc. AD bump. (link)
MBB-FBI: Sports Illustrated legal analyst McCann dives into the implications of what's happened so far in the trial in Lower Manhattan. Of note: "Some have wondered why the NCAA hasn’t actively responded to evidence and testimony in the corruption case. […] The most likely explanation for the NCAA’s reticence, a person familiar with the litigation tells SI, is that the Justice Department has likely asked or encouraged the NCAA to refrain from imposing punishments until all pieces of the corruption litigation is over. Prosecutors know that if the NCAA begins the process of punishing schools, coaches and potentially players, persons who are cooperating with prosecutors and who are leaking information may become less helpful." More as McCann notes the litigation & appeals process for the three scheduled trials could last into 2020. (link); Here's the video footage of former Adidas staffer Code saying he's surprised there's not more murders connected to the MBB blackmarket given the dynamics at play. Code: "There probably should be." (link); The new apparel deal between Kansas & Adidas is still under wraps, but the Jayhawks have started to receive royalties from the pact to the tune of $1.5M toward the end of FY18. (link)
The Athletic's Feldman gets feedback from some around college athletics on the Pac-12's FB replay saga. An unnamed "executive," who has worked in multiple 'Power 5' leagues, "I don’t know the gory details, but it’s certainly not good optics. I think they’re trying to do the right thing. The (targeting) rule is so subjective. The pro football interpretation vs. the college football interpretation is so different, and I get why we’re having the rule because the issue of making things safer is an important one. I do think everyone is trying to do the right thing, and I don’t believe that there was anything that is nefarious involved." An SEC FB coach believes similar situations happen in other leagues as leaders "look at the money." Man, that's a hell of an assertion. (link); The NCAA FB Rules Committee circulated a memo noting the replay official as the final authority on instant replay reviews. (link)
A former Middle Tennessee FB student-athlete alleges he was abused by the Blue Raiders coaching staff some 10 years ago. The story includes reports of a physical altercation between the former player & a former offensive line coach that led to punches being thrown & an attempted choke out. There's also claims of audio files that are said to have MTSU HC Stockstill admitting to the developments & the alteration of drug tests. The university releases a statement indicating an outside review of the situation has found the allegations to be unfounded. Stockstill: "This is not an accurate description of me, my coaches or the program I run – and I am pleased that was reaffirmed by the review, which was done outside of MT Athletics." (link)
Colgate Men's Swimming & Diving has been shelved for the rest of the Fall semester for "hazing and high-risk alcohol consumption." Raiders AD Moore: "In order to create a healthy and safe community of competitive excellence, we must ensure that our teams foster cultures that are free of such behaviors, which also run counter to the university’s values." All student-athletes on the squad will go through educational programming on the important topic. (link)
Facilities: Appalachian State's $45M north end zone project at Kidd Brewer Stadium gets state approval for financing & construction. 81% of the cost will be financed by debt ($36.45M), 11% from athletics gifts ($4.95M) & 8% from dining receipts ($3.6M). Projected to open in the Fall of 2020. (link); Purdue announced a massive campus overhaul called 'Giant Leaps,' Athletics will certainly be a part & early plans look to include a new south end zone project at Ross-Ade Stadium & new Track & Field digs. (link); Here's a quartet of good pics from D1Baseball's Rogers of Virginia Tech's fully completed new venue. (link); I hadn't seen any pics of inside Indiana's new MBB locker room & here's one of the clean white lockers. Hollman made it happen. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The Duluth News Tribune with part one of a three-part series on how the National Collegiate Hockey Conference was formed. Among those in the initial meeting in a small conference room on March 9, 2011 at the Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport Hotel were former North Dakota AD Faison, then-Denver AD Bradley-Doppes and Assoc. AD Grahame, former Miami (OH) AD Bates and Sr. Assoc. AD for Finance/HR Fenton and Notre Dame Assoc. AD Nevala. The group "wrote anything that came to mind on that easel board" and a month later hired the Goldwater Group to assist. (link); Part two touches on building the league and a "re-do at commissioner." Four months after landing the NCHC Commish job, former USOC CEO Scherr resigned to take a higher-paying gig as CEO of the European Games and Fenton, who was runner-up to Scherr the first time, got the job. Lots more. (link)

Still no word on the future of Maryland FB HC Durkin & we're now a couple of weeks past when some around the university believed the investigation into the FB program's culture would be complete. Terps Prez Loh earlier in the week, "I have no idea what the report will be. I’m as eager as you are in seeing what that report says. Horrific as these allegations may be, you presume somebody is innocent until the process is over." Durkin's next employment payment of $500K is due on December 1. (link)
USA Today's Schroeder takes a look at the sub-par results, thus far, for notable first-year FB HCs in Nebraska's Frost, UCLA's Kelly, Florida State's Taggart & Arkansas' Morris. Kelly has noted moral victories are not what his program is after & Morris continues to point to "what we know is coming." Second-year HCs, Cincinnati's Fickell & Texas' Herman provide perspective. Fickell on his 2017 season, "It’s easy to look at, 'Well, we won four games.' The reality is we were one play from winning one game." Herman: "Learning how to win is a real thing. When you’ve got three straight losing seasons at Texas, it’s difficult to do that." (link)
Speaking of Frost, Nebraska has blocked transferring student-athlete Bell from considering Oregon State as his landing spot & Frost says he's convinced members of the Beavers staff, some of whom were previously at UNL, are tampering with his players. A couple of former Cornhuskers have already decided to play next in Corvallis. Frost: "There's no doubt in my mind that those kids were probably in touch with some people that they formerly knew that were here." (link)
The NYT's Tracy profiles LSU FB DC Aranda & his industry-leading $2.5M in annual compensation. Aranda was not made available to Tracy as Tigers HC Orgeron notes, "There was a battle from Texas A&M; they came after him hard, but he likes what we’re doing here. He believes we’re going to win a championship." University Director of Media Relations Ballard reiterates that no state funds are used to pay Aranda, though some in the faculty ranks push back on Ballard's statement. (link)
Nebraska MBB student-athletes have moved from receiving one training table meal per day to two - lunch & dinner - as well as becoming focused on the importance of quality sleep via sensors that have measured such habits. Junior student-athlete Roby: "If you’re not willing to get eight hours of sleep tonight, you’re not going to make the tournament in March." HC Miles believes this year's schedule, which includes a 20-game Big Ten slate, will put his squad in a better position to make the Big Dance because of an enhanced Quad 1 profile. (link)
More Personnel: As expected & previously reported, Minnesota brass approved the three-year contract extension for MBB HC Coyle with a 9-2 vote. (link); Purdue MBB HC Painter gets a two-year extension that could keep him in West Lafayette through 2023-24. (link); Dartmouth AD Sheehy goes with MIT (DIII) HC Williams to take over the Softball program in Hanover. (link); Evansville Softball HC Mundell is another leader who received an extension, though no terms were noted. (link)
Twitter/Square Co-Founder Dorsey with some advice for outgoing Square CFO Friar: 1) Allow yourself to fail in public - take pride in your ability to recognize them faster and better than anyone else, and your drive to learn from them to improve yourself; 2) Don't take things personally - leading with this understanding puts what matters most into view. It's not about you. It's about what you contribute; and, 3) The work matters most - people are with you to work with you. It's their work that matters. Admits: "I've failed at all three of these. It's never easy. If you could only focus on one of these, I'd suggest the first. It's the one that will enable our greatest learning and improvement, and will drive your greatest contributions." (link)

Illinois AD Whitman believes the build of Illini FB is right on schedule, "I feel really good about where we are. The season has shown what we hoped it would, which is that the team is improving. Our competitiveness is clearly improved. Obviously we're not a finished product. We're not even halfway through the season yet. [...] It takes a while to get to the place where you're not thinking, you're just playing. I think you're starting to see that more across the board with all the different players, all the different positions, where they've been in their respective systems enough now, they've been together enough now, they've had enough experience against outside competition that they're able to relax and play. Good things happen when you get to that point." (link)
Bowling Green FB student-athlete Bright suffered heat stroke after the Falcons' matchup at Georgia Tech a couple of weeks ago & while his parents have praised the BGSU medical team for their handling of the situation, they're questioning why no coaches stayed in Atlanta with their son. "As parents, we were very frustrated on how this situation was handled. We wanted to make sure there are policies and procedures in place so another family doesn’t have to go through what we went through." Falcons AD Moosbrugger says a review of the situation made clear more emotional support should have been offered, "In hindsight, we’ve taken a look at it, we’ve talked about it a lot, and definitely feel that we can improve on making that support that the player and the parents want and need." (link)
Augustana (DII) continues to talk about making the jump to the DI ranks. AU Prez Herseth Sandlin: "We’re now looking at it as part of a broader, long-term planning process. And we’re not sure that it’s the right thing to do. But we do think it’s right to take a closer look. […] It’s an enormous investment. It would require a lot of financial resources from the Sioux Falls business community and our alumni." Greater visibility & increasing enrollment look to be two tangible reasons for a potential move. The Vikings hope to make a decision on how to proceed by the end of the fiscal year. (link)
Horizon League Commish LeCrone says "this is a critical year" for his league's relationship with Detroit, where it will hold its third consecutive MBB Tourney & the first in the new Little Caesars Arena. The Horizon has an opt-out option after this year & could move the event elsewhere. Attendance from Year 1 in the Motor City to Year 2 increased from 20,908 to 29,240, but it's not quite apples to apples as WBB's tourney was added in Y2. LeCrone believes Detroit is "the centerpiece of Horizon League basketball," but The Detroit News' Paul thinks Indianapolis would be quick to jump in as a replacement, if needed. (link)
USA Today's Wolken pens on a scenario that he believes could lead to three SEC programs making the College Football Playoff field. What would have to happen? LSU beats Georgia this weekend, but loses to Alabama, finishes at 11-2. UGA defeats the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship, leaving both at 12-1. Clemson losses to Miami (FL) in the ACC title match-up, Notre Dame drops a game, Washington, Oklahoma & Texas slip up again. Wolken thinks an 11-2 LSU, given its schedule & victories, could trump all the one-loss squads. Ohio State would be the fourth participant. (link)
Also Noticed: The MVC/MWC Challenge ends after this season and CBS/WFAN reporter Rothstein says discussions on an annual "challenge" between the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West could be in the works. (link); Some of you are already doing deals with casinos, but could the licensing of your marks/logos onto slot machines be in the future cards (pretty good pun, right?!)? The NHL's Golden Knights look to be one of the first to execute such a deal. (link); Providence canceled its annual Late Night Madness celebration following the death of a student on campus. (link); NESN and NESNplus will combine to air 16 Men's Hockey and 11 Women's Hockey games for Northeastern this year. (link); Jacksonville State extends with SIDEARM Sports with launch of newly redesigned website for the Gamecocks. (link); Boston University's athletic department hosted its first Pride Week last month. Field hockey wore special edition BU pride warm-up shirts and women's soccer wore rainbow laces in their shoes.
