A busy day on the AD wire was highlighted by Florida State boss Wilcox heading north to become the new EVP for Regulatory Affairs at the NCAA. Wilcox says he's "honored" & "humbled" to join the team in Indy. NCAA Prez Emmert: "Stan is a highly respected, visionary leader in intercollegiate athletics […] Stan’s nearly three decades of experience working in athletics administration at Notre Dame, Duke and Florida State, among others, have clearly demonstrated his commitment to providing student-athletes with the opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics while being successful in life." FSU Prez Thrasher says Wilcox has done a solid job, comments on the search, "I hope it’s not a lengthy process. I hope to push it as fast as we can. We’re not going to make any mistakes. We’re going to do it right. We got a good team over there so the trains will run on time and everything will be set. We have new folks in our football operations doing great things, and our others coaches are not shy. They get their things done." (link, link); USA Today's Wolken: "A quick word about the Florida State AD job: It is one of the most complicated in the nation because of how the school structures its athletic department. Seminole Boosters, aka the money, isn’t run by the AD. That makes it very difficult to get things done." (link)
A Turnkey-led search saw Maine recruit Colorado College AD Ralph to Orono to take over the Black Bears' portfolio. Ralph: "I wouldn’t be interested in a job unless it was challenging. The big thing is the University of Maine’s athletic brand is still very, very strong. It has always been a strong brand. I remember it growing up, and to be able to capitalize on that is going to be great. It’s the kind of place where a lot of good things are happening but there is still room to grow. To be in that kind of situation and to be able to utilize my experiences to help Maine continue on the right path was too good to pass up." University VP for Student Life & Dean of Students Dana, who chaired the search committee, says his group was looking for a leader with AD experience as senior-level leaders at bigger schools can be too specialized to see the big picture. (link, link)
Another change at Louisiana Monroe as health issues lead to Warhawks AD Floyd stepping down. ULM will now look for its fifth AD in five years as new Chief Administrative Officer McDonald will have day-to-day oversight of the department. Prez Bruno on yet another hire, "I don't worry about that too much. Certainly, you'd like to see people come in (and stay) but there is turnover. I think the important thing is that with every turnover, everyone has contributed and we've been a little bit better. [...] As I look around the country and within the Sun Belt, I see the strengths and weaknesses of ADs. You'll get an AD who is good in PR, but internally, they can't keep the pieces together. Trying to find that middle ground is where I'd like to be." McDonald says he serves at Bruno's direction when asked if he'd want to be the permanent AD. (link, link)
Ohio State: The Board of Trustees will meet at 9am tomorrow morning to review the Urban Meyer situation. The Columbus Dispatch's Sullivan & Siegel: "Two sources connected to the investigation said the likely recommendation to university President Michael V. Drake is a suspension for Meyer. Drake and the board also could opt for a 'time served' punishment since Meyer has been removed from football activities for more than two weeks." The Board has been presented with the findings of the independent investigation. (link); Yahoo's Thamel points to seven key issues that could dictate Meyer's future. (link); The Athletic's Deitsch downloads with Stadium's McMurphy on the latest developments around former OSU FB AC Smith. McMurphy: "I have not used one anonymous source in any of my reports and everything —every single thing — I’ve reported an employee or employees at Ohio State already had knowledge of. Yet Zach Smith remained an Ohio State employee until it became public and only then did Urban Meyer fire him. If I never reported any of this, Zach Smith would still be OSU’s wide receivers coach." (link)
Maryland: The father of late FB student-athlete McNair, "We have heard rumblings that Dr. Loh is under fire at the University because of his statements accepting responsibility, on behalf of the University, for Jordan’s death. It would be a complete shame if, after such a display of decency and humanity, Dr. Loh were to be let go. [...] Any notion that the Board of Regents can or should walk back from the acceptance of responsibility, or influence the investigations to water down their findings, would be self-defeating and would undermine the very high bar that Dr. Loh has set for the University and its programs going forward. The tragedy of our son’s death cannot and should not be a political football for competing factions or agendas or to settle prior scores." USA Today's says it has sources who confirm the job status of UMD leaders was not discussed by the board at last Friday's meeting. (link); No Terps FB student-athlete will wear McNair's #79 until his class graduates, helmet stickers will adorn helmets this season & the offensive line room in Cole Fieldhouse will now bear his name. (link); Notable alum, former NFL standout & current TV analyst Esiason calls for the exit of both Prez Loh & AD Evans during a CBS Sports Radio interview yesterday. (link)
Cal AD Knowlton estimates he met with 600 to 700 alumni during his first three months on the job, as well as leadership from all 30 Golden Bear programs. Now that his 90 "listening days" have concluded, Knowlton is ready to dive-in on a vision statement & then within the next 15 months a full long-term strategic plan. Knowlton: "I’m not going to solve all the problems. I don’t have any magic dust, but it’s been exciting to see the passion of our fans. [...] A vision statement of where you want to go is key, because until you have that, it’s hard to rally everybody to embrace something. The bottom line is: We’ve benefited from the listening days. Everything I’ve heard is part of the big mixing bowl that will help us on our journey from good to great." (link)
Latest SBJ: Michael Smith has a number of entries on new revenue plays around college FB, notably tailgate area upgrades, beer gardens, live music, food trucks & overall festival environments. Oregon AD Mullens: "We’re all dealing with a changing consumer, so how do we make that connection with the next generation in new and different ways. We have to move beyond the transactional and deliver more experiences. It’s not just a game, it’s a huge social activity." Interestingly, Smith says some departments are already seeing revenue that surpasses $500K from partnerships with the likes of Tailgate Guys, Blockparty & IMG Live. Tailgate Guys CEO Duffey's portfolio is up to 27 schools & has paid out $4.2M over the last seven years. Blockparty at 14, IMG Live with five. More. (link); Here's individual looks at how Cincinnati, Colorado State, Florida State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, SMU & UCLA are executing. (link); Smith with a bunch of charts on revenue trends at a number of 'Power 5' departments. One eye-opener: Texas A&M has more than tripled its Rights/licensing revenue from 2012 to 2017 from $20M to $63M. (link); Smith also pens on eight Pac-12 members who are in on a fan data effort with the other four outliers expected to join next year. "Pac-12 schools, which use Domo, a business intelligence software, primarily have used the data to learn more about ticket-buying trends like velocity — the rate at which tickets are being purchased during certain times of the year." (link); Michigan AD Manuel pens first hand on his outlook for the Wolverines. Of note, "I’m going to hire the best people for Michigan. We’re going to open the pool to be a wide swath, but it’s up to us to prepare everyone and prepare women and minorities to take that step when they’re called upon to sit across from me, to sit across from you, to sit across from presidents and search committees." (link)

The Larry Culpepper experience is over for Dr. Pepper & college FB fans, but the new 'Fansville' is up & running for the soda brand. Cameo appearance by former LSU HC Miles. It's a six spot effort with assistance from Deutsch. (link); Right Guard is also going in on college FB with a campaign around the country's top 'Designated Dancer.' Relevent is the agency & Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, UCLA & Notre Dame are all involved. (link); The Cactus Bowl is now the Cheez-It Bowl in a multi-year agreement. Cheez-It Marketing Director Delonis: "For most fans, snacks are an important part of their football-watching experience, whether they are viewing at home or throwing a game day tailgate. The unique, cheesy and crunchy taste of Cheez-It has earned a place in many fans’ game day snack traditions." (link)

New Central Connecticut State boss Barrio officially introduced in New Britain. CCSU Prez Toro: "When you accepted the position here, you said one of your goals is to keep winning Northeast Conference championships. That’s a deal. I think all of us here can get behind that goal." Barrio points to tight fiscal management, urges his coaches to treat their budgets just like their checkbooks at home. Barrio also touched on the type of culture he wants to build, plus, "This is a hard job, and it’s a challenging time in collegiate athletics. If you don’t believe in the school that you’re working for, you can’t do the job right. I believe in this place, I believe in the state, and I believe in the people here." (link)
$600K = Texas' settlement with former Longhorn's Women's Track HC Kearney in connection to her lawsuit that claimed race & gender discrimination. When it's all said & done Kearney will get $277,450. Kearney initially pushed for $1M & it looks like the university spent $500K+ on its defense. Of note, "The settlement stipulates the money will be paid by the Texas athletic department. It also requires the two sides to make no comment beyond acknowledging the settlement was reached." (link)
Texas A&M Prez Young rolled-out 11 "immediate actions" to the university's sexual misconduct policies & procedures, including one measure that takes all disciplinary action out of the hands of any organization or team & puts it into the purview of the Dean of Students. Young: "The dean of students, his retention at this university does not necessarily turn on our football win-or-loss record." As previously noted in this space, the contracts of FB ACs in College Station now include language of removal with cause if there's a failure to property report an incident. (link)
Back during FB media days the Wall Street Journal took at look at how many times SEC leaders said "we" versus "I." We did some quick research with the rest of the 'Power 5' HCs around the nation. Top 5 with the higher "I rate" were Arizona State's Edwards, Virginia Tech's Fuente, Vanderbilt's Mason, Ohio State's Meyer, Texas A&M's Fisher & Oregon State's Smith (the last three tied at 3.70%). At the other end of the spectrum with the greatest share of "we" were Illinois' Smith, Rutgers' Ash, Wake's Clawson, LSU's Orgeron & Purdue's Brohm. (link)
More Personnel: Colorado State AD Parker on FB HC Bobo's status: nine days in the hospital thus far, still working on diagnosis, encouraged by doctor's efforts and believes he could be released "any day."Not ready to speak publicly on potential contingency plans. (link); Kansas AD Long names former Texas AC McFalls as the next Softball HC in Lawrence. (link); Quinnipiac MBB HC Dunleavy signs a five-year extension, taking him through the 2022-23 campaign. (link); Louisville FB AC Klenakis has been placed on administrative leave following a DUI arrest. (link); Eastern Illinois AD Michael hires Arizona Christian Men's & Women's Tennis HC Tolson as the new leader of the Women's program in Charleston. (link); Looks like @ryenarussillo will get a new deal with ESPN to include a podcast portion and guest spots on studio shows. (link)
Cable TV/OTT: Big Ten Network Prez Silverman on negotiations with Comcast, "We’re in discussions. The season starts in two weeks. I’m concerned. We’ve got to make a lot of progress in a short amount of time. I don’t know how things are going to proceed. We’re doing all we can to try and get going. We got engaged late. We need to make progress. [...] We’ve seen Big Ten fans not happy if they can’t watch their team’s games. We’re trying to do all we can to keep it going. The fact that there are discussions going on is good but by now the deal should be done. There’s back and forth right now. The ball is their court. We’ll see what happens." (link); The Athletic's Deitsch says the coming ACC Network expansion play has a deal in place with Altice & a key OTT provider. (link); When Stratechery's Thompson writes on the cable bundle & sports, it's usually pretty valuable to listen. Of note, "On linear TV, time is a finite resource, which means the most valuable properties are those the most people don’t want to miss. In the U.S. that means professional and college football in particular, and increasingly NBA basketball; unsurprisingly the rights fees for those three are ESPN’s most expensive. When it comes to streaming, though, time is infinite; that means the value of a particular piece of content is not so much how attractive it is relative to another piece of content in the same time slot, but rather on how many subscribers it can draw." (link); Solid review from Awful Announcing on the most recent cable subscriber numbers. ESPNU on 632K fewer cable boxes, ESPN lost 290K, FS1 down 147K, BTN -350K. However, OTT growth is balancing things a bit for ESPN & others. (link)
Good read from Yale School of Management organizational behavior professor King for the Wall Street Journal: "The Problem With Popular Employees." Thesis: "Popularity can negatively affect decision-making and lead to suboptimal performance by fueling overconfidence. […] Because overconfidence is socially rewarded and its detection isn’t penalized, overconfidence generates further popularity and doesn’t require individuals to acknowledge their own limitations. What’s more, even when incompetence isn’t masked by popularity and overconfidence, people prefer to work with lovable fools rather than competent jerks. While perhaps understandable, this means that the talent of less socially adept employees is underutilized as workers seek the more appealing collaborator. […] Another way leaders can alleviate this problem is to link at least part of individuals’ rewards to the performance of their collaborators when work is interdependent." More. (link)

Watch: Pacific AD Lucas has been getting to know the lay of the land in Stockton, says "the strengths of this athletic department and this university are vast and varied from my perspective. It really starts with the history and tradition... and the connection it creates with our alums with pride and a sense of school spirit." Further, Lucas believes she has a quality HC cohort as their focus is squarely on their student-athletes. Ultimately, Lucas believes her Tigers represent so much of what is good & right about college athletics. Notes how her own story revolves around growing as a student-athlete. A bit more. (link)
Tulsa Prez Clancy pens for the Tulsa World on his athletic department's match with the university's mission & overall city's benefit, pushes for increased support & attendance. Clancy points to Tulsa Mayor Bynum's 'For Our City' campaign that includes the Golden Hurricane and notes, "University of Tulsa student athletes make Tulsa a better place to live in many, many ways. Tulsa, it is now your opportunity to return the favor. I hope you are willing to show these extraordinary young people your appreciation by coming to their games in all of our sports and cheering them on to victory. Do it For Our City!" (link)
Xavier unveils plans for the $10M Heidt Family Champions Center, which will serve as an athletic training facility for sports med and S&C services. Heidt is the CEO of Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine and vice chair of the school's Board of Trustees. XU has raised 75% of the needed funds but will have it fully funded before construction begins in 2020. It will be housed in the O'Connor Sports Complex. New field turf is coming for those two programs in the coming months, as are renovated dugouts and new walls around the field. Strahan will get a new court and center-hung video board. An official grand opening for all of the projects is scheduled for early October. (link)
Here's a headline you don't see everyday... "Miami Hurricanes will wear uniforms and cleats made from ocean garbage." The Canes will be the first CFB team to do so as they will don the new unis in the season-opener against LSU. "The special edition adidas x Parley A1 uniform is made of 70% ECONYL yarn, a raw material repurposed from fishing nets and other nylon waste removed from the marine environment." FB HC Richt says the players are excited to "help promote sustainability around the world." As impressive as the headline or eco-friendly move are the reveal pictures. (link, link)
Penn athletics has partnered with the Penn Positive Psychology Center to "enhance the student-athlete experience by providing training in positive psychology and resiliency." Quakers AD Calhoun: "This partnership with the Positive Psychology Center is a prime example of the convergence of many of our strategic priorities. An emphasis on wellness and mental health is extremely important in higher education and at the University of Pennsylvania, and the training that our students receive will help them thrive in all areas of their lives, both now and in the future. We also believe that enhanced resiliency will enable our student-athletes and teams to achieve even greater competitive success, both in the Ivy League and beyond." Coaches and select athletic department staffers participated in a three-day workshop over the summer and four teams - heavyweight men's rowing, softball, men's tennis and volleyball - will participate in the pilot this year, which includes 13 sessions of training from PPC staff. (link); Coastal Carolina will host Norfolk State at Brooks Stadium in 2019 for $225K. (link); The new ESPN TV deal makes the UFC worth $7B per Prez White. UFC sold for $4B just two years ago. No certified CPA review to support White's claim. (link);  LSU FB student-athlete Davis was in court yesterday, gets a 10 p.m. curfew and no-contact with his ex-girlfriend ruling from the judge. D.A. Moore indicates the investigation is ongoing but that a "charging decision" could come in the next two months. (link); Wisconsin FB student-athlete Cephus has been suspended by the team after being charged with two felony counts of sexual assault stemming from two alleged incidents on April 22. (link); Last night protesters on North Carolina's campus knocked down a controversial statue of Silent Sam, which was erected in 1913 to "remember the sons of the University who died for their beloved Southland 1861-1865." Chancellor Folt with a statement on the incident, in part: "The monument has been divisive for years, and its presence has been a source of frustration for many people not only on our campus but throughout the community. However, last night's actions were unlawful and dangerous, and we are very fortunate no one was injured. The police are investigating the vandalism and assessing the full extent of the damage."
