Fairleigh Dickinson AD Langford has announced his retirement, effective June 28. During his 15-year tenure, Langford has overseen numerous facilities upgrades helped raise the department GPA to over 3.2 for eight consecutive years and served on three NCAA governing boards: the DI XC and Track and Field Championships Committee; the DI Awards, Benefits, Expenses, and Financial Aid Cabinet and the DI Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet. Assoc AD for Facilities and Operations Liggett will oversee the department on an interim basis. (link)
Jackson State is set to announce Prairie View A&M AD Robinson as its next AD, according to the Clarion Ledger, which reports that JSU will hold a press conference at 11 AM today. Robinson, a Jackson native, has served as Prairie View A&M's AD since 2013. He worked as JSU's assistance compliance director in 2007 and also spent a year as the SWAC's assistant commissioner for compliance. JSU spokesperson Greenleaf has indicated that Prez Bynum has no comment at this time. (link)
Freshly minted Utah AD Harlan has established a straightforward rubric for grading himself and others during his tenure in Salt Lake City: winning in the the classroom, in competition and in the community. "Everybody, including myself, will be evaluated on the three Cs going forward. I told that to the staff this morning and I want everyone to know it’s as simple as that." As he gets started, Harlan has identified listening as a top priority, explaining that it is "critically important" to hear from coaches, staff and donors to determine what motivates them to invest the way they do. "I think that’s really important to learn. Once you get to that point then you start formulating your plan and go about doing all the things we need to do in winning in those three categories that I talked about. But this first period of time is going to be listening profoundly and not doing a lot of talking." (link); Salt Lake Tribune columnist Kragthorpe gave Harlan and Utah high marks following yesterday's introductory presser, citing the new AD's Pac-12 background and work establishing USF as a national FB presence. "Harlan looked and sounded like someone sent over from Central Casting for an AD. ... Barely glancing at his notes, he said everything anyone could have wanted to hear from him." (link)
Back in Tampa, USF has named Deputy AD for External Operations Kull as interim AD and announced it will hire a national search firm to assist with the selection of the next permanent AD. USF tapped Texas-based Eastman & Beaudine to help guide its 2014 search that resulted in Harlan's hiring, paying the firm $100K during the eight-week search. USF Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program Director Sutton will lead the internal search committee. Prez Genshaft: "(USF) is at a critical juncture in its history. Reaching new heights in academic achievements, research productivity, community collaboration and global influence, the university needs a leader who can similarly elevate USF Athletics and position the program for national excellence." (link)
Auburn: AD Greene has decided to part ways with six senior staffers, including Chief Communications Officer Swift, Senior Assoc ADs Hill and Mines, SWA Jenkins and Chief Revenue Officer McBride. Of those let go, Swift was the longest-tenured, having joined AU in 1994. (link); Meanwhile, MBB HC Pearl has agreed to an extension with the school through the 2022-23 season. In announcing the extension, Greene cited Pearl's "holistic approach" to developing student-athletes and "adhering to the mission of Auburn University as an institution of higher learning." Auburn has led the SEC over the past five years with 18 graduates and three years of perfect APR scores. (link); To Yahoo columnist Eisenberg, Pearl's extension is indicative that the FBI's recent probe into MBB has not stimulated any change within the sport. Eisenberg takes particular exception with Pearl's unwillingness to speak with the law firm Auburn tapped to conduct an internal investigation last fall, citing that "ESPN reported that university officials advised him his job would be in jeopardy if he continued not to cooperate. Only seven months later, Pearl has a contract extension and Auburn appears poised to stand by him barring new information emerging." (link)
Texas AD Del Conte has confirmed the layoffs of at least 13 staffers described by a source as "rank and file" employees within the department. UT has not indicated a proximate cause for the layoffs, but Del Conte has alluded to the athletic departments' size, comparing it to a "battleship," adding: “These are good people. It’s hard for me to look at a piece of paper and say, ‘That’s just a name.’ I understand the expectations placed on coaches. But we’re talking about staff. They’re good people. They have families. These types of decisions are always difficult. But my job is to create the most efficient department I can for the betterment of our student-athletes and coaches." UT reportedly has 448 full-time staff members with an aggregate base salary total of roughly $47.3M. (link)
A lawyer hired by Georgia Tech has found "no credible evidence" to support claims that MBB HC Pastner sexually assaulted a woman. Pastner had been accused of inappropriately touching the girlfriend of a former friend. AD Stansbury says he will meet with Pastner to discuss access to the program by outsiders. (link)
Pac-12 presidents have approved a rule that will require FB teams to win at least 6 games to be eligible for the postseason. Commish Scott says the new rule will maintain the quality of competition for bowl season while providing "our fans around the country with the most exciting games featuring our leading Pac-12 teams." Meanwhile, Washington State FB HC Leach questions the wisdom of the decision, calling it a "solution searching for a problem." He adds: "If we had a 5-7 team lucky enough to make a bowl, they could probably use the practice and the players would probably appreciate the chance to play another game. Why should we limit opportunities when other conferences aren't?" (link); Pac-12 MBB coaches last week submitted their votes for next season's likely order of finish, and the league is now considering whether to schedule matchups among the top teams later in the season to optimize NCAA Tournament metrics. FRS Sports columnist Rothstein cites a source that indicates the league's "travel partner rankings" have been voted: 1. USC/UCLA; 2. Oregon/Oregon State; 3. Arizona/Arizona State; 4. Washington/Washington State; 5. Cal/Stanford; and 6: Colorado/Utah. Rothstein also reports that coaches will hold a call on Friday to further discuss the matter. (link)
Add the Sun Belt to the list of conferences getting creative with its MBB scheduling strategy. In 2019-20, the #FunBelt will divide into two 10-team divisions & somewhat like Conference USA, here's the twist, "After each team has completed those 16 games, the conference will be divided into four pods consisting of three teams each (Pod A will be teams 1-3 in the standings, Pod B will be teams 4-6, Pod C will be 7-9, and Pod D will be 10-12). Each school will play the other two in its pod at home and away to round out the 20-game schedule." There's also a non-conference reservation of two game dates to play against "peer conference opponents." (link)
UC Davis AD Blue follows-up the new Football Attendance & Revenue Case Study on AthleticDirectorU (link) with a 1.Question convo with co-host @TaiMBrown. In part, Blue defines his preferred methods of helping staff prepare to handle tough situations, enhance their leadership roles, and provide the best possible environment for Student-Athletes. Of note, "College athletics lies at the nexus of many of the industries that are undergoing significant change and if you aren't actively learning, you'll find it difficult to move forward in your career. […] Professional learning and enhancing your knowledge base is an imperative if you want to keep up with the changes that are occurring in college athletics. […] We believe professional development to be an imperative rather than a luxury." More. (link)

WSJ's Bachman writes on college Softball making the national teams of countries outside the United States better, "The Women’s College World Series finals starting Monday, with Washington facing Florida State in a best-of-three format, are a living example of USA Softball’s plans. Four Seminoles players are on the Puerto Rican national team, including pitcher Meghan King. First-base coach Ellie Cooper, an FSU captain in 2017, was born in and plays for New Zealand. The Huskies’ two ace pitchers, Gabbie Plain and Taran Alvelo, play on the Australian and Puerto Rican teams, respectively. Washington catcher Morganne Flores, who missed the season with an injury, also plays for Puerto Rico." USA Softball Executive Director Cress: "If you don’t have good competition, then people don’t want to watch those games and that sport will become less relevant." More on the future of the sport at the Olympics & collegiate levels. (link)

"The growth and success of our Conference over the past five years has been extraordinary, but we also know that we still have much more work to do. We have gained tremendous traction with our Power 6 narrative, and have become the nationally respected and relevant conference we always envisioned. Our focus over the next several months will be on our media rights, as we all understand its importance to the future of our Conference. […] We are a growth stock of unlimited potential and I applaud our institutions for the outstanding work they have done." That's AAC Commish Aresco at the conclusion of his league's recent meetings. Among new leadership assignments, UConn AD Benedict was added to AD's Executive Committee & will chair the Finance Committee, a subgroup that now also includes Temple AD Kraft & Houston boss Pezman. (link)
The Big Sky's new Serious Misconduct Rule will begin during the December signing period for prospective student-athletes & all other student-athletes for the 2019-20 competition seasons. In a nutshell it, "prevents individuals with a history of convicted violence to receive athletic-related financial aid or participate in practice or competition." "Serious Misconduct" is defined as, "any act of sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, sexual exploitation, or any assault that employs the use of a deadly weapon or causes serious bodily injury." Pleading guilty or no contest to felonies or misdemeanors in this context applies to the new policy. (link)
San Jose State and the PIVOT Agency partner up for a naming rights campaign for a trio of Spartans facilities. The Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center ($139M facility coming Dec. 2018), the Event Center and South Campus are part of the project. VP of University Advancement/Tower Foundation CEO Lanning: "With naming rights partners, we are looking for brands that share our vision for the future of this campus. We have full confidence in PIVOT Agency, with its success in this geographical area and its understanding of the collegiate sponsorship space, to identify such partners." (link); Rutgers held the topping-off ceremony for the $115M RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center yesterday. Prez Barchi on the milestone: "This to me, this is one of the signature things that we have been trying to accomplish that, in fact, is not that easy to do. This is not bush league." (link)
Deals, continued: Bradley and Under Armour partner up, replacing Adidas as the outfitter for Braves programs. (link); Missouri chooses Legends to assist in wrapping up the $98M Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium renovation. Specifically, Legends will "assist with developing and executing the sales and marketing strategy for the new premium seating areas." On the table are 16 suites, 1,200 club seats and 750 Touchdown Club memberships. (link); Blockparty will help NC State with premium tailgating options for Wolfpack fans. (link)
Former Pitt Wrestling HC Peters has sued the institution on claims of racial discrimination connected to his dismissal last year. Peters wants his old spot back & is pushing for "compensatory damages and other related costs." There's mention of an incident at a hotel back in December of 2016 involving student-athletes that former Panthers AD Barnes told Peters he didn't handle correctly, which resulted in a one-match suspension & was closely followed by his exit. Peters's attorney: "We don't think there was any misconduct. What happened to him was really unfair." (link)
More Personnel: Virginia Tech Prez Sands gets an extension through 2024 (link); Louisville Baseball HC McDonnell continues to be rumored as a candidate at Mississippi State, but Cards AD Tyra is trying to end that: "[I] will continue to be in regular contact with Dan to assure him that we want him to remain in Louisville." (link); Louisiana AD Maggard says the Ragin' Cajuns intend to extend the contract for MBB HC Marlin, whose current deal runs through 2019-20 with a $455K base. (link); Eastern Michigan AD Wetherbee removes the interim tag for Eagles Baseball HC Roof. (link); Florida promotes AHC Nesty to Men's Swimming and Diving HC and AHC Poppell to the top spot on the Women's side. Both had been on staff with longtime HC Troy who announced his retirement in April. (link); TCU places Cheerleading HC Farris on administrative leave as the school investigates multiple complaints from former members of the team. "Most of the concerns focused on a lack of communication from the coach about individual performance. Some cheerleaders were also unaware that they had access to the free meals available to athletes." (link); Arkansas AD Yurachek hires a familiar face in Houston Women's Tennis HC Steinbock for the same role in Fayetteville. (link); Butler Prez Danko elected to a two-year term as Chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors. (link); Allie LaForce could be finalizing a full-time deal with Turner Sports, to make her the lead sideline reporter for "NBA on TNT" among other duties. LaForce couldn't reach terms with CBS. (link)
UNLV AD Reed-Francois is the latest guest for former Tennessee AD Hamilton on his 'From The Chair' podcast via AthleticDirectorU. Some excellent lines of convo between the two friends as Hamilton hired Reed-Francois during his tenure in Knoxville. Reed-Francois: "Who you work for really matters...more than your title, more than your salary, more than the institution. [...] As a lawyer, when I was younger, I would listen to win. I’ve learned to listen to understand. [...] There’s room at the table for more than one woman. Let’s celebrate each other’s success... because comparison really is the thief of joy. [...] When every leader looks at a job, they want to find out what makes us unique, what’s our unique value proposition." More. (link)
More on Virginia AD Williams' focus on upgrading the Cavs FB program as Executive Director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation/Sr. Assoc. AD Katstra says, "She sees things differently. […] Obviously her focus is trying to help football first and keep everything else on a top level." Williams: "A healthy football program is a win for an entire athletic department. It just is. I think we’re there." Also, Williams on facilities, "The optics matter. We just have some ground to make up." (link)
Staying in the Commonwealth, VCU AD McLaughlin reflects on 2017-18 for his Rams & looks out into the future. McLaughlin: "I think we had a terrific year, winning five A-10 championships and a regular-season championship as well. And also getting an NCAA tournament berth for men's soccer as a seeded team. I think it was a terrific year." On the A-10's new ESPN+ deal, "I think as we can get more digital content going for our league, I think it's great. And, obviously, it's always good to be associated with ESPN in any way possible. And this new venture for ESPN, it seems like they're putting a lot of emphasis and energy towards it." Points to facilities as a key point of focus moving forward, specifically a new ballpark, indoor-outdoor tennis center & a new indoor field house & practice space. McLaughlin also notes a new strategic plan is nearly complete, a bit more. (link)
Iowa boss Barta says the topic of reducing the number of Big Ten FB match-ups from nine to eight has not been discussed among his peer group in any meetings, though they do debate how to achieve the right mix on "crossover" games. Also, "We committed to the East-West. I like the East-West. Everybody likes the East-West. Clearly, things go in trends. But, no, there’s been no discussion about going away from East-West. […] We talk about how we can make ourselves better but we’ve never, I’ve not been in any conversations where we talked about changing the makeup." (link)
Florida State Softball won Game 1 of the WCWS championship series last night in a thriller over Washington. Softball's success is another in AD Wilcox's deep roster of programs who have made noise on the national scene during 2017-18, "I think they definitely feed off of each other. [...] Just like on the playing field they want to compete against each other. When they see how successful their co-student athletes are in other sports, they also want to accomplish that. The greatest student-athlete experience that you can have is when you’re playing at the highest level and having success at the highest level." Further, Wilcox points to the attitude of Prez Thrasher, who expects excellence on & off the field, a directive which Wilcox carries down & is embraced by HCs & his administrative staff. (link)
Attorneys for former Louisville MBB HC Pitino say the university's Board of Trustees actively pushed a smear campaign against their client & former AD Jurich, "That is what they chose to do all while purporting to take the moral high road. But the moral high road is earned, not self-proclaimed. And (the university) misread the map if they think that entrance to the moral high road is gained by smearing loyal employees in the name of saving money." Pitino's lawyers also say there's yet to be any evidence that proves their client broke any NCAA rules in the MBB-FBI developments or did not operate his program with the highest integrity. (link)
Also Noticed: Condolences to those at Kentucky, Alabama, Vanderbilt & around the SEC & nation who benefited from the leadership touch of former MBB HC & AD Newton. Newton passed away yesterday at the age of 88. (link); Lots of negative pushback on the MLB Draft occurring right in the middle of regional games last night. Vanderbilt HC Corbin: "It's borderline disrespectful." (linklink); Sounds like instant replay is coming for the regional round of the Baseball Tourney. (link); A bevy of data on progress for Virginia Tech's Hokie Club, much of which has been previously reported. However, I think this is new, the push for a new Student-Athlete Performance Center generated $1M more than needed, an amount that will now be put in an endowment for future facility needs. (link); Butler will host the Big East's Student-Athlete Well-Being Forum starting today. (link); Western Kentucky FB will get $1.5M for visiting Michigan State in 2021. (link); This is interesting: N.C. State's endowment built a "socially responsible" fund in 2013 & it's outperforming the university's overall endowment. (link); Dover Downs in Delaware will start to accept single game sports bets today. Here's a pic. (link)
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference was on point yesterday & the highlights included a new ARKit, better Do Not Disturb controls, personalized emojis ("memojis"), FaceTime advances that now allow for up to 32 people to all see & talk together at once, adding Dolby audio support for Apple TV & lots more. Also, from Recode, "Apple is launching a multi-year project that would allow iOS apps to run on Macs. This year, it’s testing it in-house with some of the new previously iOS-only apps it’s launching for Mac. But next year, developers will get access to some of these tools, too." (link)
