Southern Miss AD Gilbert plans to meet with ECU officials about the open AD chair in Greenville ("hopefully by the end of the week"), but there's been no sort of offer or acceptance yet, according to the Hattiesburg American's Cleveland. (link); As for the Board of Trustees meeting yesterday at ECU, no official word on the AD search, though it certainly could have been a topic of conversation when the group went into a closed session. Also, from Student Government Association Prez Koonts on the leadership of embattled Chancellor Stanton, "I think the chancellor has done a great job. He (Staton) has a great vision and I am confident that he will get to continue pursuing that vision. He (Staton) cares deeply about our students, university and everything in between." (link)
More from exiting Cleveland State AD Thomas on his decision, "It was completely my decision — 100%. I’ve done this a long time. I've been in college athletics 35 years — half of that as a Division I athletic director. I knew at some point in time this was something I wanted to pursue. […] College athletics is very fluid, very transitional, and I'm not saying that's a good thing." Looks like the Vikings will identify an interim leader in the near future with plans for a full search in 2019. (link)
As part of its 2018 Reader Survey, SBJ published a bunch of interesting takeaways gathered from around the industry. Here's one of particular note: "What athletic director would you most want leading your athletic department?" Stanford's Muir received 36% of the vote, followed by UCF's White at 15%, Clemson's Radakovich at 14%, Alabama's Byrne at 13%, Oklahoma's Castiglione at 11% & Penn State's Barbour at 10%. Lots more sports industry-wide feedback. (link); SBJ's Dealmaker's event is in full swing in NYC & some notable names were on stage: Teall Capital's Sutton, Shamrock's Resnikoff & Bruin Sports Capital's Pyne just to name a few. Sutton says he & his partners look for opportunities where they can "repackage and rely on our relationships - there's 100 years of social capital between our four partners - so if we think we can lean in and rapidly grow a business, then that's the place we want to be. So, we're not investors in the classic sense, we truly want to be subject matter experts about the things we're investing in." More. - (link - scroll down, link - one of Sutton's clips)
CBSSports.com's Norlander chats with NCAA SVP for Basketball Gavitt on the first NET rankings release. Gavitt says he'd consider running the 2017-18 season through the new systems, which could ease some frustrations around understanding the new framework. Of note, "In any rankings system when you've played less than 20 percent of the season, you're going to have some head-scratchers. This is a year-long education process. I think we feel comfortable with the decisions to date and we'll continue to evaluate it. This is very much a forward-looking analytic. We're trying to track all of this and evaluate it for the future as we go along. We are not going to make any changes to the NET during the season. It wouldn't be until after the season, after selections, that we consider any tweaks, and don't anticipate those right now, but will certainly evaluate it." A bit more. (link)
Washington State FB dropped to 13th in the latest CFP rankings & Cougars AD Chun can't make sense of it, "We’re just hopeful that there’s a correction at the end with the last poll. We want to make sure people are taking a look at 10 wins for us, and two losses that were tough losses, but were by no stretch of the imagination bad losses. We feel like our resume stacks up with the best two-loss teams in the country, not the best three-loss teams in the country." CFP Executive Director points out close defeats to highly-ranked teams for three-loss Florida, LSU & Washington. (link); Additionally from Pullman, Wazzu FB HC Leach tweets that he's thinking about teaching a six-week class on "Leadership Lessons in Insurgent Warfare & Football Strategy." Asks students if they'd be interested. (link)
The Oregonian's Canzano with Part II of his look inside the Pac-12 & this one was truly from the inside as Canzano spent time with league officials during a FB Saturday to see how the replay dynamics really worked after major controversy earlier in the season. Former Washington State & current Nebraska AD Moos with another quip toward league Commish Scott, "Larry is more apt to call and tell you what is going to happen, rather than ask for your input." Former Washington/UCLA/Colorado HC Neuheisel comments on Pac-12 General Counsel/SVP of Business Affairs Dixon still being involved in replay, "That's the one guy that should realize he shouldn't be there. The replay process should only be guys that know every rule known to man. Woodie knows that. He should not have been anywhere near that process." Lots more, including an announcement by Scott to staff back in March of 2017 that many thought would be news the league had reached a carriage deal with DirecTV, but instead was Scott announcing his extended employment agreement with Pac-12 CEOs. (link - article, link - Scott video)
Though it's only eight-seconds long, here's the latest video angle of former LSU FB AC/current Texas A&M FB AC Craig heading toward the LSU sidelines after Saturday night's 7OT win that may have started the commotion. Craig can be seen demonstratively pumping his fist within yards of the Tigers sidelines & in some cases within feet of LSU student-athletes. (link)
Hawaii's FY18 ended up $1.905M in the red, the seventh consecutive deficit year for UH. From an independent auditor's report, "...the financial condition of the athletic department declined due to a decrease in ticket sales, services and guarantee revenues subsequently offset by a decrease in operating expenses. [...] Further liquidity continues to be a concern as the athletic dept. requires significant borrowings from the university. During the years ended June 30, 2018 and 2017, borrowings from the university totaled $11 million and $7.4 million respectively." (link)
Interesting international student enrollment piece from Inside Higher Ed as so many DI institutions are pushing forward to enroll more foreign applicants. Illinois has taken out an insurance policy to guard against a tuition decline by Chinese students in a move that's believed to be the first of its kind. IHE's Bothwell, "...the university signed a three-year contract with an insurance broker to pay the annual six-figure sum, which provides coverage of up to $60 million." The policy specifically applies to the colleges of business & engineering. The "six-figure sum" looks to be $424K. (link)

It's That Time of Year: Purdue HC Brohm will not return to his hometown of Louisville. Reports indicate the Boilermakers have upped Brohm's compensation to the $6M range against an offer from the Cardinals that was more like $5M for seven years. Brohm's high school alma mater will be closed today after a threat was made regarding Brohm's decision. (link, link); Georgia Tech AD Stansbury is now on the clock after skipper Johnson says it's "time to take a break." (link); The latest from the office of Auburn Prez Leath in connection to static around FB HC Malzahn, "there has been no change from what the Athletics Director and President each said recently." (link); Rutgers AD Hobbs on sticking with HC Ash, in part, "Continuity is the key to accomplishing our goals. No one said this would be easy or straight uphill. There are many examples of programs and coaches who in the process of building experienced disappointment in year three. The critics will continue to say it can’t be done. They won’t deter us from our task." (link); Multiple outlets indicate Charlotte AD Hill has offered his HC job to James Madison's Houston. The Dukes expect Houston to coach his current squad in the FCS Playoffs this weekend against Colgate. (linklink); New Mexico HC Davie says he's yet to meet with Lobos AD Nunez to review his status leading the program in Albuquerque. (link); Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger goes with Boston College AHC/OC Loeffler. (link); Tulsa AD Gragg says HC Montgomery will return to lead the Golden Hurricane in 2019. (link); Texas State AD Teis selects West Virginia OC Spavital. (link); Jackson State AD Robinson makes Interim HC Hendrick the permanent boss of the Tigers. (link); South Carolina State's Pough wants to coach the Bulldogs for an 18th season, but says negotiations are still on-going in Orangeburg. (link)
Ole Miss AD Bjork continues to be on the wire, this time in a letter to his Rebels fanbase, details his plan for FB's resurgence: 1) Support HC Luke & help to make any decisions necessary to "fix deficiencies"; 2) Improve every element of the program ranging from AC salaries to facilities to academic support & the gameday experience; 3) Enhance recruiting operations; 4) Ensure no NCAA compliance issues; and, 5) "Build more fan support, one person, one meeting, one event, and one interaction at a time through personal relationships and delivering results." (link)
With FB staffing moves in full swing, Matrix Analytics Solution's Bartoo writes for AthleticDirectorU on how recruiting radiuses can tell different stories for different programs. Thesis: "In our studies of recruiting, we have determined that there are two consistent aspects to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) based recruiting. (1) Most programs are range-bound in recruiting, and (2) programs need to have a minimum recruiting radius to maintain current talent levels or expand the radius to increase the talent levels. [...] When a program starts to take off in recruiting, we will most often see an uptick in distance traveled per-player-signed." Bartoo takes a close look at TCU, North Carolina, Louisville, Oregon & Mississippi State over the last decade. (link)
More Personnel: FAU AD White hires Duke's Executive Director of Compliance Giardina as Senior Assoc. AD of Compliance for the Owls. (link); Learfield announces that "Longtime Iowa radio broadcaster Gary Dolphin has been suspended from calling the team's next two men's basketball contests after critical comments that were inadvertently aired during Tuesday's Hawkeye win over Pitt." Dolphin was critical of recruiting efforts and specifically Hawks student-athlete Dailey. (link); Ohio State will a well-done video highlighting the tenure of former MBB HC Matta that was aired during last night's game against Syracuse as Matta and his family were welcomed back. (link); NBA EVP/CMO El will retire at the end of the calendar year. (link)
TV/OTT: The sale of Disney's 22 RSNs hits another speed bump as another player, Major League Baseball, says it's interested in taking a look. More specifically, MLB Commish Manfred told "bankers in charge that they need to alert potential buyers that any purchase of these entities doesn’t include digital rights to baseball games that remain the property of the leagues and its teams — a move that could lower the price of the networks as the auction process proceeds, according to four people with direct knowledge of the matter." (link); Overall, NFL TV ratings this season are up 5% year-over-year, which is solid news for sports programming & advertisers overall. (link); On the other hand, NASCAR lost 700K viewers per race on average compared to 2017 data. 1.1M in average attrition over the last two years. (link)
SEC Commish Sankey was on The Dan Patrick Show yesterday & was pressed on the potential of an expanded College Football Playoff. Sankey says it's the most frequently asked question he's asked, indicates it's not been part of any strategizing by he & his FBS peers. "Right now we feel like we've hit the right balance, knowing there's always going to be tension around who is in and who was left out." Patrick challenges, "I think college football is missing out on story lines." Sankey's rebuttal, "We have marvelous storylines, in fact, some of the storylines I just wish I could not pay attention to." More. (link)
Syracuse & IMG re-up for a "long-term" agreement on multimedia rights & licensing fronts. The pair's relationship goes back 20+ years. No financial components noted, per the norm. (link); ESPN inks a multiyear deal with PlayStation that includes continued title sponsorship of the Fiesta Bowl, as well as "the official gaming and virtual reality sponsor for the College Football Playoff and its New Year’s Six Bowl games." Sony Interactive Entertainment SVP of Sports Marketing Temple: "Our audience insights tell us that college football fans are more interested in video games, more likely to play them and more likely to stream sports through a gaming console compared to the average person." (link)
Oregon State generated $714K in beer & wine top live revenue at its six home FB games this season. No word yet on how the total nets out after considering security, alcohol monitors & other expenses. 192 ejections from Reser Stadium during the '18 campaign, which was a "slight jump" from previous years. (link)
In 2013, North Dakota State was supposed to host Montana State in Fargo, but the Bison exercised a buyout option in the game contract, leaving NDSU with Ferris State (DII). At the time, the MSU buyout was $100K, but since then Bison AD Larsen shares that buyouts are now around $400K. Larsen: "I think a lot more schools are moving in that direction. A fair amount of them have been burned. You’re seeing a lot more schools making the buyout higher for canceling contracts." Other recent canceled trips to the Fargodome included Western Carolina cutting a $200K check and bailing in 2016. NDSU and MSU face off in Fargo for the second-round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday. (link)
