Michigan State Interim Prez Engler says the university won't address the topic of a permanent AD "until after we cut down the nets in San Antonio." No word on if Engler will make the decision on who to hire or if the new permanent Prez will get the selection. (link); Engler also continued his pushback on ESPN's reporting of the developments in East Lansing during a media exchange yesterday, "The 50,000 students on campus are going to class, and they want a safe environment. I think you have a safer environment today, and with the changes we are making, we’re making significant progress. That’s very much to the good and that response to the larger national debate that ESPN is wrapped up in. Look at the sexual assaults you guys are dealing with as a company. It’s pretty serious. In many ways, their company is one of the worst offenders in the nation. So we have a sexual assault challenge in America today. But for Michigan State, we’re dealing with it on our campus." (link)
New Florida Atlantic boss White will make base annual compensation of $300K as part of his five-year deal to lead the Owls. White's $300K is up from former FAU AD Chun's pay of $265K & looks to be in the upper third of Conference USA AD pay packages. "White’s contract also includes bonuses for fundraising, overall athletic performance and the academic performance of the athletic department students but it does not provide specific dollar amount or percentages." (link)
ECU officials met with staff from the Daily Reflector to set the record straight on the athletic department's financial viability after reports last week questioned the budget situation for the Pirates. In outgoing AD Compher's five-year run, revenues grew from $33.8M to $40.7M & the current deficit sits at $3.3M, not the nearly $7M noted by the paper. Further, Chief Communications Officer Eppes notes the deficit is mainly a result of the exit from Conference USA for the American (last payment to be made next year) & the addition of a Women's LAX program. ECU's deal with "IMG Marketing" is valued at $14.3M & the Adidas apparel pact is worth $16.5M. Also of note, the $55M loan from BB&T for the upgrades to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium will be repaid at a 2% interest rate, not the 5% the Daily Reflector noted. More. (link)

Maybe Cleveland should be the permanent home for the NCAA DI Wrestling Championships as the city set total & single-day attendance records for the event that concluded yesterday. 113,743 for the three-day stretch & 19,776 for yesterday's Finals. MAC Commish Steinbrecher, who co-hosted alongside Quicken Loans Arena & the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, said he looks forward to playing host again in the future. (link)

In a piece where the Fresno Bee's Warszawski pushes Fresno State FB HC Tedford to be more visible in the community, Warszawski also updates on the AD search, "I’m told by a reliable source the job will be posted in late May and the search conducted in June." Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Ladwig indicates a new marketing plan is coming, "We would be awfully silly for not pushing Fresno State football incredibly hard this summer." Tedford, in part, "I’m good with whatever. I’m here to coach and do whatever it takes to have this program be successful. It’s not necessarily my role to step on peoples’ toes to come up with the ideas to market the program, as well." (link)
Interesting read on strategy around the communications plan by North Dakota to introduce new AD Chaves by leveraging traditional outlets, along with digital & social assets to weave together a seamless announcement. The emailed announcement sequence: Student-athletes first, then the rest of the athletic department, Champions Club members, then various athletics-related constituency groups. Social media graphics were created when the search process was narrowed down to the four finalists, plus in-game scripts had to be reworked during the weekend to include Chaves' introduction. Really detailed piece, more. (link)
"Nothing’s changed on the membership side in that we haven’t had anybody raise their hand or come forward and we haven’t proactively sought another program. So it’s status quo." That's Hockey East Commish Bertagna on the potential of his league expanding beyond 11 members. Bertagna says there will also be more debate around the post-season tourney structure during the off-season, "I’m sure there’s going to be an athletic director who says, 'Why does everybody have to get in, anyway? Just play eight teams and go right to the quarterfinals.'" (link)
Pac-12: CBSSports.com's Dodd continues on the league's rough patch, does note the FB hires of former Oregon boss Kelly at UCLA & former Texas A&M HC Sumlin at Arizona could help to turn the tide as the calendar moves back toward the gridiron. (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues to question how Arizona MBB will be able to successfully move forward with HC Miller still in place. Wilner also argues the NIT still very much matters for league programs involved due to the extra practices & games for developing student-athletes. (link); Also of major note for the conference: The White House may place a limit on visas to Chinese students as part of "a crackdown on China's trade practices." (link)
Former Oklahoma & Dallas Cowboys HC Switzer riffs on the current compensation trends for FB HCs, "What about the coaches? The salaries these damn coaches are getting? I got paid $24,000 a year, went 32-1-1, won two national championships, two undefeated seasons back-to-back. I didn’t even get a bonus. We were on probation [at Oklahoma]." Full TMZ included.  (link)
More Personnel: San Antonio Spurs AC Hammon will not be the next HC at her alma mater, Colorado State, but she did meet with Rams AD Parker about the opening. (link); New Mexico FB HC Davie returns from his suspension today. (link); The Tulsa World's Haisten argues Oklahoma State MBB HC Boynton should get a raise from $1M to $1.5M for the job he did this year & then to $2.4M for more positive results. Why $2.4M? That's what former HC Ford made in his last year in Stillwater. (link); Northern Arizona MBB HC Murphy will return next year to lead the Lumberjacks. (link); Penny Hardaway's East High School squad won a state title yesterday, how soon will he be announced as the next MBB HC at Memphis? Early this week says the Commercial Appeal's Calkins. (link); More hoops HC bonus info from USA Today's Berkowitz given wins in the NCAA Tourneys. (link)
The voice behind UMBC's MBB Twitter account is Zach Seidel, who put on a show Friday night as the Retrievers became the first 16 to beat a 1 in MBB Tourney history. Seidel says he went into the week with the attitude of, "I’m going to appreciate this, I’m going to live it up, I’m going to have fun … you’ve got to enjoy the moment man, you’ve got to enjoy it." When did he think UMBC actually had a shot to win the game? "When Joe (Sherburne) got the and-1 and the 3 to put us up six, I knew for sure we had people’s attention, so I was like, 'Alright, people are paying attention. Let’s do some funny tweets, let’s try and get the school attention. We’re going to have some time in the limelight so let’s put a positive spin on this for the school.'" Post-game: "In the locker room I had ESPN and USA Today wanting to interview me and we had all these players in there, but I had media wanting to interview me in the locker room and I was like, 'Why?! What’s happening?!'" More. (link)

UMBC's historic upset of top-seeded Virginia in the NCAA MBB Tourney has created a significant increase in publicity. According to media intelligence company Meltwater, 87% of the school's mentions on social media and 37% of news articles mentioning the school in the past 12 months came either Friday or Saturday. Joyce Julius and Associates estimates that by Saturday morning at 11 a.m. UMBC had generated $21.3M in equivalent advertising exposure and 12 hours later that number jumped to $119M. (link); Yahoo's Forde collects quotes from MBB HCs nationwide who expressed their sympathy for Virginia HC Bennett on the loss. Duke's Coach K: "I thought Tony did such a great job after the game in expressing his feelings, and really the feelings of what you should feel as a coach... we all understand that when we go into that arena, some great things can happen. But also, some really difficult things can happen... my heart goes out to him... I just thought he handled it so well, and what a great example for all coaches to not just handle victory well, but to handle defeat, because you’re going to experience both." Syracuse's Boeheim: "If I could hire a coach in this country and I could get Tony Bennett, there would be nobody in second place. Nobody. He’s kicked our ass every time we’ve played him except we got lucky once." Villanova's Wright texted Bennett: "No one could handle that with as much class as you did. And it could have happened to any of us." (link)
Arizona's SB Nation site asks about the tenuous spot Wildcats AD Heeke finds himself in relation to his MBB program, "...how do you make sure you don’t end up with a coach that’ll end up facing sanctions (or worse) of their own? Who’s in the know? Is anyone? And even if you find a successful guy that is actually free and clear of all the shadiness of college basketball recruiting, is that guy going to want to come to Arizona where sanctions in the near future seem more likely than not? Do you want to take over a returning roster of six guys and no recruits?" In closing, "Heeke's job may be the most unenviable in all of college athletics. [...] Good luck with the impossible." (link)
Air Force AD Knowlton confirms that the Academy will have an outside review of its sports teams given the recent hazing incidents within the Swimming and Lacrosse programs. Knowlton: "We are going to develop teams with dignity and respect. ... I couldn't be prouder of what the department accomplished in three years. The timing couldn't have been worse, but this is about the hard right and not the easy wrong. ... Here's the bottom line for me - I don't have to win games or matches or championships. I do have to be a key cog in creating leaders of character." A deeper look here at the improvements Knowlton has made in his three years in Colorado Springs. (link)
Liberty continues to expand its athletic facilities footprint as the Flames will add a new multiuse Liberty Arena between DeMoss Hall and the Vines Center. The 4,000-4,500 seat venue will be the future home of MBB, WBB and Volleyball games and ready for first tip in 2020. Construction should start this fall. Flames AD McCaw: "Liberty Arena will provide our teams with an intimate environment and tremendous home court advantage. Flames fans will enjoy the arena's modern amenities, including premium seating and hospitality areas." The project will also give the Vines Center a facelift. (link)
Another Nike executive, this time it's VP & General Manager of Global Categories Martin, exits the company as it deals with internal reports of inappropriate workplace behavior. Martin oversaw key business units such as Women's, Running, Basketball & Training. Martin was the top aide to Nike brand Prez Edwards, who stepped away late last week. (link)
Also Noticed: USAToday's Wolken: "College basketball has a lot of problems and relies on an absolute sham of a system but you’re not getting a postgame interview with a 98-year old nun in the NBA. You’re just not." Team Chaplain Sister Jean was all smiles after her Loyola Chicago MBB team hit a game-winner against Tennessee yesterday to advance to the Sweet 16. (link, link); The Indiana athletic department eclipsed the nine-figure mark for the first time in school history, as the Hoosiers brought in $106.1M in revenue for FY17, up from $46M a decade ago. 12th straight year IU has finished in the black, with $7,373 to spare last year. Media rights agreements marked $21.7M of last year's total, while FB generated $37M, and MBB nearly $25M. (link); Marshall MBB HC D'Antoni, when asked if his squad will play the West Virginia one anytime soon: "You will have to ask West Virginia about that. I'm not going to just play at Morgantown, so after that ask West Virginia." (link)
