Words from Creighton MBB HC McDermott on the allegations from Lower Manhattan, "Over my 25 years as a head coach and 30 years in college basketball, our programs have been compliant with NCAA rules and our coaching staffs have acted with integrity. I have never knowingly violated NCAA rules, nor would I allow any member of my staff to do so. […] I plan to return all of my energy and my focus on the outstanding young men in our program that chose Creighton for our values, our world-class education and our competitive record of basketball success." (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt reflects on his career path, points to being a student ambassador during his time at Kansas State & traveling the state with the Catbacker tour as giving him an initial look at athletic administration. Soon thereafter Hocutt got connected with industry big name, former Big 8CFA boss Neinas for an internship. Hocutt also notes his time working for Oklahoma AD Castiglione as key to wanting to become an AD. Hocutt's current approach in a nutshell, "If we’re going to do it, if we’re going to invest in it, if we’re going to keep score at this level, we should spend the resources that we can to do it right and to be successful. I want to be able to look all of our head coaches in the eye and embrace expectations to be successful, to compete for championships and to know that they have the resources to do that. And then when there are deficiencies there, it’s my job to go out and work on their behalf to give them those resources so they can continue to achieve." (link)
Yahoo's Forde recaps a wild day around college FB yesterday, wonders if a one-loss Texas team is now the best possibility for the Big 12 to crack the College Football Playoff, even with West Virginia still unbeaten. Calls N.C. State the "biggest mystery among the undefeateds," Notes Cincinnati HC Fickell getting the Bearcats back to national relevance as a win over Tulane moved UC to 6-0 after a 4-8 campaign last year. Also, thinks the SEC East is back & mentions the number of $6M for a buyout of Louisville HC Petrino when many others are pointing to more like $14M. More. (link)

The ever popular CALS gets started today with Pittsburgh playing host this year. Pittsburgh Steelers Owner Rooney II will deliver opening remarks tonight, as will Pitt AD Lyke. A laundry list of who's who is slated to be part of panels Monday & Tuesday, including 'Managing your Career & the Search Process' with leaders from Carr Sports Consulting, DHR, Eastman & Beaudine, Korn Ferry, Parker & Ventura. Lots more, here's the agenda. (link)

Notre Dame kept its CFP plans well within sight with a victory late last night in Blacksburg. ESPN's Rittenberg wrote on how Fighting Irish HC Kelly prepared his squad for the madness. Back during goal line simulations during spring practice, Kelly replaced the football with a soccer ball & told his offense to figure it out & still score. Lineman Mustipher: "That was the craziest thing. It kind of shocked me." Horns, sirens, ear-splitting helicopter sounds, "chaos" strength & conditioning workouts were all part of the mix. Kelly: "We're trying to create an environment of distraction. I want them out of their comfort zone. As coaches, we practice, practice, practice, practice. Everything's scripted, five minutes for this, five minutes for that. Then, you go in the game, and all hell breaks loose and you're like, 'Whoa!'" (link)
Check out this video on how the NCAA MBB Tourney selection process has changed over the years. I'm not familiar with the video's host, hoopvision68, but the explanation of the evolution, plus where it may be headed, is pretty solid. There's also a look at how some team sheets, like that for Monmouth back in 2016, would have changed by switching out RPI ranks for KenPom's, which *could* be similar to how the new NET system operates. Also covers the 'Wins Above Bubble' metric that predicts the likelihood of winning certain match-ups & rewards the resume of the winning square on a scale of 0 to 1 (i.e. 25% chance of winning, .75 value if team wins / -.25 if team loses). Using the framework, Monmouth's 2016 WAB ended at .15, which would have been fifth best for the 12 teams on the bubble. Lots more. Pretty interesting. (link)
The ECAC announces its full list of schools participating in its upcoming eSports season, which will take place over five different gaming platforms. DI members include Canisius, Iona, Marist, Quinnipiac, Sacret Heart, Saint Peter's & Siena. 11 other schools also in the mix. The league expects many more to join the cohort before the Spring semester. (link)
"He’s not just what you would consider to be a head coach, somebody that only focuses on Xs and Os. I think he’s an individual that looks at success in a variety of ways and interacts with this academic community and the community at large in ways that go beyond just being a head coach. I think he has put a face on this university and certainly on athletics and football. Any time Joe is doing something publicly ... he’s carrying the teal flag with him and that’s certainly some great advertising for Coastal Carolina University." That's Coastal Carolina Prez DeCenzo on FB HC Moglia, who moonlights as the chairman of TD Ameritrade and brings a CEO mentality to his coaching duties. AD Hogue: "He sees things from a very different perspective than most of us do, not just football but any type of area whether it’s business or logistics, and that can be challenging. That can be challenging to the status quo, that can be challenging to convention, but it also can help you move forward and improve how you do everything. ... He’s incredibly solution-oriented and he’s very relentless and he demands that level of relentlessness from his staff to find solutions, to always adapt, adjust and evolve in how you approach what we’re doing." Lots more on Moglia's background. (link)
brought to you by Turnkey Search's Politi: "Patrick Hobbs must fix the Rutgers football mess that he created." Suggests two ways of doing so: 1) Replace FB HC Ash, which would cost the Scarlet Knights $10M in buyout monies, plus, per Politi, another $15M to be attractive to a new coach; or 2) "Fix the mess, which means some difficult but necessary conversations in the offseason." Politi: "At some point, swallowing all that money on the contract could become the prudent business decision. It is almost inconceivable that Rutgers, a university that couldn't scratch out enough nickels to move on from Kyle Flood after his disappointing second season, would have the stomach for something like this -- and Robert Barchi, the disinterested/clueless university president, certainly is unlikely to help.  It's up to a savvy athletic director to overcome all that. If it's hopeless -- and it sure looks hopeless right now -- anything but a full reboot is likely to dig an even deeper ditch for this program. ... He has two bad choices. No matter how much money Hobbs raises, no matter how many buildings go up around Piscataway under his watch, his legacy rests on getting this right." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz keeping us up to speed on bowl bonuses, as several became eligible yesterday, including Cincinnati's Fickell ($75K) and Alabama's Saban ($65K). (link)
Also Noticed: Virginia Tech's Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility was officially christened at halftime of last night's VT-Notre Dame game. (link); Severe weather in Fayetteville forced ESPN to remove some camera operators from their perches and left viewers with the network's camera angles, which "made Alabama and Arkansas look like ants playing football." (link); TV scheduling guru Sarzyniak with this week's lineup. (link); Several Stanford FB staffers and non-dressed players spotted wearing #SetTheExpectation t-shirts last night, in support of the campaign by notable sexual assault survivor @brendatracy24. (link); Another example of streaming woes...many were unable to watch the AL Wild Card game on Wednesday on TBS due to "content loading" issues. (link) powered by Turnkey Search
