UNLV AD Reed-Francois pens to the Las Vegas Review-Journal after the five-part series analyzing the state of the Rebels' department. Starts: "As the director of athletics, I am proud of our storied past, as it demonstrates the galvanizing impact of collegiate sports. But the Review-Journal told only part of the story." Reed-Francois notes the goal of competition for championships in every sport & doing so with integrity & sportsmanship, goes on to detail that her team's story really is about the student-athletes, their accomplishments in the classroom, preparing for impactful lives once their eligibility is exhausted, access to education & the student-athlete experience for many who may not otherwise get the chance. Also: "We know, however, that results matter, and we are putting in a process where success will be the byproduct. We are slowing turning that tide and, in addition to our five conference championships, we are appreciative of the 65 percent increase in donations from last year to this...and the 40 percent increase to new donors to UNLV athletics through our Drive for 5 program." In conclusion: "I cannot promise you this journey will be easy. But, I can promise you it will be worth it, and that we will work hard to provide for our student-athletes and to build a department to make you proud." (link)
Seven overtimes & the most points ever scored in an FBS tilt is how Texas A&M-LSU ended in College Station as the Aggies prevailed 74-72. There was a post-game fight between LSU Director of Player Personnel Faulk & a member of the A&M staff (seriously, what's up with all the fighting around the nation?), Tigers analyst & former multi-stop HC Kragthorpe also got punched, multiple officiating questions, Gatorade being dumped on LSU's Orgeron before time ran out in regulation, the first down line being displayed wrong by the SEC Network for a critical play that made it look like A&M came up short & lots more. The Dallas Morning News' Baby: "At some point, officials from both teams has to come out on the record and talk about the LSU-A&M altercation after the game. People get paid too much money to operate otherwise." (link, link, link, link, link)
Yahoo's Thamel & Forde wrap up the day of action beyond the craziness in College Station, question if Oklahoma "belongs anywhere near the Playoff" even if it beats Texas in the Big 12 Championship game given its porous defense. The pair note the bad luck for UCF with a season-ending injury for QB Milton & also wonder if high-profile NFL Draft prospects will participate in bowl games (Oregon's Herbert & Missouri's Lock). 81 bowl eligible squads for 78 spots. More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Kindness as a business strategy is reviewed by Fast Company co-founder Taylor for Harvard Business Review. Taylor points to research that shows kindness is contagious, "Almost every leader I know wants his or her colleagues to go above and beyond normal standards of service, to impress customers with their kindness. Many of these leaders also believe that achieving this goal is largely a matter of policies and procedures — kindness as a directive. Actually, the way to unleash kindness in your organization is to treat it like a contagion, and to create the conditions under which everybody catches it." Taylor goes on to detail strategies rolled-out by Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Cannon to "incite" his 23K employees around the nation, "Give them permission to rise to the occasion when the occasion to do something arises. This is not about following instructions. It’s about taking a leap of faith." Plenty of examples of how they did just that. Good read. (link)

Ohio State AD Smith on the health of FB HC Meyer before the Buckeyes defeated rival Michigan yesterday, "The headaches do occur on the sidelines and in different situations. I don't know (if he's coming back), I don't want him to sacrifice his personal health. When the seasons over, he'll sit down with his family and discuss his future. It's more about him and his family doing what's right for them and his health." Also, "It's challenging to listen to the pundits talk about what we (Ohio State Football) don't have, but in life, sometimes, you need to focus on what you do have. The reality is we're 10-1 and that's a lot to have." (link)
A plane flew over The Coliseum last night with the message: "Lynn Swann - Please fire Clay Helton!" The GoFundMe page that financed the stunt raised $14,765 earlier in the week with contributions from 238 people in four days. USC AD Swann when asked for his thoughts on the 2018 campaign: "Do you think anyone's happy with this season?" Swann also says he has a plan in place for FB HC Helton's future but will discuss it with the coach first. A release will be put out "soon." (link, link)
North Carolina AD Cunningham's response last night on the future of FB HC Fedora, "No decision." If Fedora is fired without cause UNC owes him upwards of $12.2M paid over the next four years. As for Fedora, he says, "I plan on being here." (link, link)
More Personnel: UConn FB HC Edsall says personnel and lack of effort from his team is to blame for the Huskies 1-11 season and it would appear AD Benedict agrees: "Of course [Edsall will be back next season]. To even be asked that question is somewhat inappropriate. Randy isn’t the reason the program is at where it’s at. We’ve had a lot of change and lack of continuity that creates the situation we’re in. I see the rebuilding process as Randy stated. We’ve got a lot of work to do. Randy is a builder of programs and he’s going to build this program." (link); Rutgers AD Hobbs says FB HC Ash will be back next season. (link); Purdue FB HC Brohm: "I want Louisville to do what's best for them. I'm a fan. But right now, I'm the coach at Purdue. This is where I want to be and I like it here." (link); USA Today's Berkowitz with yesterday's bank account bumps: Boise State HC Harsin gets $75K for MWC title game appearance and seven conference wins, Cal HC Wilcox with $150K bonus for seventh win, but will not get a $10K bonus for beating USC as the Trojans didn't finish with six wins; Fresno State HC Tedford gets $50K for Bulldogs' 10th win of the season, up to $550K so far and will likely get another $200K for home attendance; Kentucky's Stoops adds another $250K for ninth win, up to $750K so far; Minnesota HC Fleck picks up sixth win and $75K; App State HC Satterfield pockets a combined $50K for winning Sun Belt East and nine games this season; Wyoming HC Bohl will see $25K for bowl eligibility; Ohio State's Meyer with $50K for Big Ten East title (this is his first bonus of the year); NC State boss Doeren gets $50K bonus for beating UNC plus the conversion of $250K from not base salary to base salary; Purdue HC Brohm gets $112,500 for bowl eligibility. Lots more in the under $20K category. (link)
The Arizona Daily Star will join a legal action to unseal records in the civil suit filed against former Arizona T&F AC Carter and the school. Through the middle of last month attorneys for Carter and the UA had billed the state nearly $2.6M for work in the case. The motion, filed by The Star in Pima County, states: "This case is a matter of public concern in Arizona because it involves the conduct of a prominent employee of the University of Arizona, a public institution. It always implicates broader issues related to the institutional handling of sexual abuse and misconduct, which has been at the forefront of national public disclosure for more than a year. ... Among the primary concerns of this Court 20 months ago in ordering that some records in the case be sealed was the fact that publicity may affect the ongoing criminal trial." A hearing on the issue is set for Thursday. (link)
ESPN/OTT: Outkick the Coverage's Travis goes deep on ESPN's loss of 2M cable subscribers in FY19, equaling $1.44B in annual revenue, wonders when the financial ramifications may prohibit the Worldwide Leader from bidding on key rights packages, like the NFL Monday Night Football deal. It should be immediately noted that Travis doesn't account for Disney still making $8/month for some subscribers who cut the cord, but still pay for ESPN via an OTT platform. Further, Travis asks if Disney should spin off ESPN as a separate business or even sell it to Amazon, doesn't think there's any way to stem the tide of losses. (link); Turner's Bleacher Report is offering full refunds to all those who paid for the "The Match" between Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson given the streaming challenges. Comcast and Spectrum also on record for issuing credit to customers. (linklink); Ampere Analysis estimates DAZN will need to add 1.5M subscribers as a result of its new MLB deal just to break even. (link)
President Trump's steel tariffs on China will likely mean increased costs for infrastructure projects around the nation, but it's not the only element serving as a challenge to keep the cost of construction down. Per the Wall Street Journal's Maher, "Through October, the price of diesel fuel was up 27%, asphalt-paving mixtures were up 11.6% and steel-mill products were up 18.2%, all compared with a year ago." While many of the examples in the article are large, state-sponsored projects, the conditions will impact developments in higher education & college athletics. (link)
Also Noticed: Attendance for Baylor vs. Texas Tech FB games held in AT&T Stadium has dropped dramatically since the first meeting in 2009 when 71K fans filled the stands. The 2018 version saw just 27K. (link); This year's Apple Cup (Washington vs. Washington State) was the highest-rated one ever on FOX, up 63% over last year with a 2.6 meter market rating per Nielsen. (link); Alabama flew in a helicopter to blow dry the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium yesterday. (link); An all-out brawl erupted between NC State and North Carolina players yesterday after the final play of the game (but seriously, again, what is with all the fighting this year?). (link)
