Rapid Tests + Paid Sick Leave Updates for Members
Paid Sick Leave + rapid tests

As a member of the Gibsons & District Chamber of Commerce you also have the BC Chamber working for you. Below you will see the update of the topics sent to the BC Government.

Rapid Testing
Rapid tests are critical to our businesses’ viability. Unfortunately, the SafeScreenBC program, which has been built to support the government’s controlled approach to test distribution and which includes onerous reporting obligations, is simply not meeting our members’ needs.

This week, the president of the BC Chamber has made it very clear to government that our business community needs urgent access to rapid tests – whether they are provided by government or independently – to help manage absenteeism, keep doors open and manage escalating paid sick leave.

It has also been made it clear that in the event government cannot/will not address that need, then the BC Chamber of Commerce will take steps to fill the void by sourcing rapid tests for the business community, engaging upfront legal advice to ensure we understand what we can/cannot do if we are to serve in some distribution capacity.

We will keep you apprised of our next steps.

Paid Sick Leave
Paid sick leave is yet another burden for our network.  Many businesses, especially small businesses, continue to be impacted by the pandemic and hammered by policy changes at a time when they are financially stretched and emotionally exhausted.

From the president of the BC Chamber of Commerce:
I understand we want to see action from government. Although paid sick leave is now legislated, I want to assure you we will not give up seeking that action. I am continuing to advocate for our members and speaking directly with government on the matter, urging them to rethink the timing of the program given the impact of Omicron.

I’m also working closely with my counterparts from other provincial associations who are equally concerned about the impact the program is having on their members. While I don’t expect government will reverse course on this file, my hope is that they will recognize the burden they have placed on business and make adjustments in other areas to balance the impacts on small- and medium-sized businesses.

The power of our network comes from its breadth, reach and diversity. Knowing that many of you have regular communications with your elected officials, I encourage you to share members’ concerns re rapid tests and paid sick leave directly with the elected officials in your communities.

A Big Shout Out to Sechelt! #13 Most Resilient City in BC
District of Sechelt

A big shout out to the District of Sechelt for moving up the ranks in BC Business Magazines list of "Most Economically Resilient Cities in 2022". Congratulations for moving to spot #13 out of 50 cities in BC!

"Carrying forward last year's theme of resilience, our eight annual ranking of BC's best cities for work once again examines 50 of the province's largest communities. With added consideration for social and environmental resilience, we throw a spotlight on the top regional performers and feature local businesses learning to navigate a post-pandemic world."

It is through these efforts that the Sunshine Coast continues to be one of the most vibrant and prime places to live!

Check out this link to see how ranking is compiled.
