The fight for emancipation is perpetual.

Hello Neighbors,

Today is Juneteenth 2020, yet we continue to fight for emancipation. Juneteenth honors the day when the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was TWO and HALF years AFTER President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

LAST WEEK, we won a years long fight to repeal NY's police secrecy act. Since 2016, we've joined Legal Aid Society in the fight to repeal 50a and strengthen NY's freedom of information law. (VOX)

YESTERDAY, the City Council passed a VETO PROOF POST ACT (EFF). At School of Data 2020, our allies detailed how the NYPD was digitally stop and frisking all New Yorkers. (YouTube

TODAY, we call on our community to take two actions — one local, one global.

!! FIRST !!

We want budget justice. Our city's budget is a moral document. We know we can do better!

We are asking for our community to support Communities United for Police Reform (CPR), a coalition of community organizations that are leading the movement to defund the NYPD by at least $1 billion in Fiscal Year 2021 and invest that money into Black communities and other communities of color. Contributions to this gofundme will support CPR and Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC), a Black-led, Brooklyn-based member organization of CPR that is dedicated to nurturing local leadership, building community power, and winning concrete improvements in people’s lives.

We are suggesting a donation of $19, in honor of Juneteenth. For those who have the resources, please consider giving more. We also encourage you to share our fundraising call with your own community of family and friends.

!! SECOND !!

You may not have heard of OpenTechFund, but it's likely you've benefited from their work. They provide vital support to free and open source (FOSS) projects that make the Internet safer and help activists, journalists and others circumvent online surveillance and censorship, such as Signal and Tor. They and global Internet Freedom worldwide is being attacked by the current Federal administration. If we don't act today, we will all pay the price.

I can't stress how urgent this is. We need you and allied orgs to sign this letter today!!!

Now and always, solidarity. See you in the streets!
