December 2021

Dear members,

As 2021 draws to a close, PACFA continues to advocate for members and further develop our membership offerings.

PACFA has recently been appointed to the Department of Health’s review of the Better Access Initiative, which provides Medicare rebates to eligible people. This review is long awaited and PACFA is pleased to ensure the voices of counsellors and psychotherapists are heard on this important matter.

This continues our work of meeting with key stakeholders to drive important conversations about the roles of our members. In early November, Dr Alexandra Bloch-Atefi - Chair of PACFA’s Research Committee - and myself presented new data about workforce distribution at the Australian Rural and Remote Mental Health Symposium. In tandem, we are liaising with other groups such as the Australian Patients Association (APA) which has been inundated with enquiries from people seeking mental health help. The APA will now be referring members of the community directly to PACFA’s Find a Therapist directory, which we are currently in the process of revising. We encourage all members to update your member profile and ensure your contact details, modalities and specialisations are listed and up to date, as this is not automatic from your PACFA membership record.

This month we profile PACFA member Amy Woods, a counsellor at Eating Disorders Victoria. We are always interested in hearing about members doing innovative and important work - if you want to put yourself or another member forward for a member profile, contact us at admin@pacfa.org.au

2021 has been a difficult year for many, particularly those based in Victoria and New South Wales, so I’d like to acknowledge those challenges, and sincerely hope all our members will have an opportunity for relaxing and re-energising over the festive season.

We look forward to continuing to support you and the profession in 2022.

Best wishes,

Johanna de Wever
Chief Executive Officer

The PACFA office will be closed from 5pm 23 December 2021 until 17 January 2022.
