The National Blue Ribbon Schools program and the U.S. Department of Education extend wishes for a happy and productive new year to all.

2017 NBRS Award Ceremony
Highlights of the 2017 annual NBRS ceremony, which drew nearly 1,000 participants, is available on the NBRS website:
This year we are showcasing videos of ceremony events starting with keynote speaker, Sydney Chaffee, and the Terrell H. Bell awardee presentations.

Chaffee's perspective on students as "Heroes" in the mythological sense resonated widely with attendees.

The library of practices is expanding!
NBR program staff reviewed school applications to highlight the use of effective practices. This year’s focus is on Civic Engagement, Student-Centered Instruction, and Student Leadership practices. There are seven other practice areas. Learn more.

2017 Site Visit Videos are on the horizon.

The featured schools and topics are:

  • PS 748 the Brooklyn School for Global Scholars (Brooklyn, NY)—a reinvented neighborhood school from an application G&T school that maintains high achievement.
  • Pinewood Elementary School (Grand Rapids/Jenison, MI)—social-emotional and whole-brain learning supports student confidence and learning.
  • Skyland Elementary School (Greenville/North Greer, SC)—a rural school delivers a world-class education in a struggling community.
  • White Street School (Springfield, MA)—new leadership effects the rapid transformation of a school from chronically underperforming to high-achieving.
