Media Statement from Bishop Vincenet Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv

Australian Catholic Bishops Delegate for Refugees regarding the High Court's decision on offshore processing.

In response to the High Court decision regarding offshore processing, Bishop Vincenet Long ofm conv released the following media statement.

“Following the High Court decision, the Australian Government’s response to people seeking asylum, including babies born in Australia and their parents, should focus on protecting them from harm and respecting their human dignity.”
“I urge the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton to show compassion and mercy towards these families and not act in a way that will cause even more harm than has been done already.”
“The Catholic Church is prepared to collaborate with other community organisations to provide support for asylum seekers.”

Australia's Policy of Deterrence is Unjust and Indefensible, says Catholic Social Services

ASYLUM SEEKERS should never be used as pawns in defence of Australia's borders,’ says Marcelle Mogg, CEO Catholic Social Services Australia.

Speaking in response to participant discussions on Australia's response to the current global refugee crisis at the Review, Reimagine, Renew Conference in Melbourne, Ms Mogg said that Australia must stop using people fleeing conflict as a deterrent to others seeking asylum in this country.


Episcopal Vicars and Catholic Immigration Offices Meeting

On 22 and 23 February 2016 the Episcopal Vicars and Catholic Immigration Offices from the Metropolitan Dioceses in Australia met to discuss pastoral models for our catholic migrant communities. 

This meeting provided an opportunity for the migrant chaplains of the Archdiocese of Brisbane to meet with the diocesan directors and with the episcopal vicars for migration to discuss the local and global issues of migration.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge celebrated Mass for the gathering. Bishop Michael McCarthy and Bishop Joseph Oudeman also attended the meeting.

Meeting of His Holiness Pope Francis With His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia

On the 12 February 2016, joint declaration of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia was release by the Vatican calling for the assurance of large-scale humanitarian aid for large number of refugees seeking safety in neighbouring lands.
