After Advent, we were warned, "Winter is Coming" and it sure did! In the last 3 months we saw 63 centimetres of snow on 13 separate occasions. Hark, the herald "snow angels" sing!
On a sunny day at the end of January, the PCDA made a leap of faith and placed a deposit on a property in the University Endowment Lands at the gateway of UBC, on Wesbrook Mall near University Boulevard. We are planning to build a new "Menno House" student residence for 70 students, and are looking forward to an expanded ministry on campus. Our project committee is arranging financing for what will be about four years of building approvals & construction. At some point we will be listing the 4000 West 11th Avenue property for sale to ensure that our final mortgage is as low as possible. We are working hard to find a path that will hopefully allow us to continue operating the Menno Simons Centre for as long as possible during the development process (even by renting it back from the eventual buyer).
Your support of the Abendmusik Vesper Choir and our student ministry is truly welcome. Prayers for guidance as well as offers of advice and monetary support have been very encouraging to us in choosing this way to the future.

The Menno Winter Retreat was held at the Deroche Christian Retreat Centre - a quiet and picturesque setting overlooking the Fraser River. Our theme was on the role of mountains in scripture and their gifts to us (silence, solitude, sacredness, and sight) We had ample time for making music and meals together, enjoying personal quiet times, playing games, singing, sharing - and even a little sledding!

While selecting applicants for the 2016-2017 Menno community, we noticed that many of them shared similar sounding names: Anna, Hannah, and Alanna, Nick and Nicole, Ellie and Elizabeth, Stefan and Stephen, and even two Lukes and two Landons! It turned out to be a sign of other things they would have in common. The community this year has shared more than similar sounding names. They've come to share their hobbies (music, cooking, hiking, skiing etc..) their studying strategies (those engineers...), their time (it's a limited resource for students!) their faith (especially in Small Groups and Book Club), and their lives with each other. As Residence Coordinators we both participate in and observe the growth of the community each year. We can definitely say along with the psalmist: "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!" (Psalm 133:1)
