Dear Salem-Keizer School Board and Superintendent,

Like many parents, I was not afforded the opportunity to speak during the public comment of your last meeting. As I have already expressed to you, there has been a noticeable trend of a disproportionate number of LUS activists being given an opportunity to speak during your meetings while only a statically improbable and small number of parents get to speak. Due to this, I will address my concerns publicly and in writing.

While addressing the high rates of suicidality among transgender youth should not be ignored, applying the practices in this district’s transgender policy to the entire student body population instead of just those affected by gender dysphoria is ill advised. There are no studies that I have found looking at the effects of teaching gender fluidity to gender conforming students or the impacts it could have on the mental health of gender conforming students. This appears especially foolhardy considering the greatly increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide amongst all youth. The US surgeon general and several national pediatric societies have declared American youth to be in a national mental health crisis. This is just one of many concerns I have about the release of this policy.  MORE HERE

Day of Silence, was started by Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network 25 years ago. The political demonstration is practiced in public schools K-12 all across the country. PRIE reported on it last in 2019, because school did not meet in person for the last two years.

Although PRIE does not condone bullying of any kind, these continual regular demonstrations in school have now become offensive offensive and are known to hurt the cause.

PRIE is opposed to ANY political demonstrations in school. We recommend parents first find out what their school is planning on the 22nd. Then decide if you want to keep your child home. Tell your school board and school principal why you are keeping your child away.

The DOS website describes the activities of the day.
TRADITIONS OF THE DAY

Silence is a powerful message. On Day of Silence, the LGBTQ community and its supporters use the same silence that they are subjected to for highlighting issues they face and promoting the rights of the LGBTQ community.

In solidarity with the LGBTQ community, students take a vow of silence and participate in silent campus rallies and demonstrations. The message is executed with colorful posters, tapes over mouths, and staged theatrics. The silence is broken by the end of the day.

HOW TO OBSERVE DAY OF SILENCE

  1. Take the vow
After all, this is the whole point, right? Spending the day in silence draws attention to these pressing issues, and may invite productive conversation with work or school mates.

  2. Organize others
A movement is always more powerful with numbers. Encourage your friends to participate with you, and make the silence that much louder.

  3. Read up on LGBTQ issues
Educate yourself — that way, once you can speak again, you can educate others who may be curious about your vow and why you took it.

Many members of the LBT community do not condone using K-12 school for political indoctrination. The focus of every school shall be academic. Any disruptive behavior shall not be tolerated. If those guidelines are followed, there will be no harassment.
