Join Us On This Thursday!

WHEN: THURSDAY MAY 1, 2014, 3:30pm

WHERE: FRUITVALE PLAZA—INTERNATIONAL BLVD. at 35th AVE
Oakland—On Thursday, May 1, hundreds of people will join a regional march in celebration of International Workers' Day.  Community members and organizations will be traveling from San Francisco, Concord, Livermore, Richmond, San Jose, among other places to join people in Oakland for a lively march through the historic Fruitvale neighborhood. This year's regional May Day March will bring together a diverse coalition of community, labor, and faith groups, along with hundreds of residents, to draw connections between critical issues affecting working people of color in the Bay Area, and to gain support for ongoing fights for economic and social justice.

As part of a powerful upsurge of immigrant peoples’ campaigns for civil and human rights across the country, this year's Bay Area march will rally organizations and community members around the following demands:

  1. LEGALIZATION FOR ALL UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS; END TO DEPORTATIONS
  2. UPHOLD WORKERS RIGHTS
  3. STOP FEDERAL AND LOCAL POLICE VIOLENCE, AND TO BRING OUR LOVED ONES HOME FROM PRISONS, JAILS, AND DETENTION CENTERS
  4. BUILD AND DEFEND STRONG AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
  5. END U.S. MILITARY AGGRESSION & POLICIES THAT FORCE MIGRATION
This uplifting regional celebration of International Workers' Day will amplify the vibrant legacies and hopeful spirits of Bay Area communities. The march will feature inspiring speakers from many different organizations, and exciting performances from the region's artists and cultural workers. March organizers and community leaders will be available for interviews (in multiple languages including, English, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic) in the next week leading up to the march, and on the day itself.
