Makers making stories at the Decatur Book Festival
Keeping in the theme of celebrating story-telling over the beautiful Labor Day weekend, so many interesting and creative kids and adults stopped by our booth at the Decatur Book Festival to tell their stories by making buttons... So. Many. Buttons. But folks also loved our DIY spinning pinwheel projects enough to listen to our stories :)
Thanks to our good friends at the Decatur Book Festival for putting on another great event, and big hugs to all our wonderful volunteers including the folks from Volunteer! Decatur who helped us out! See you all next year!
But wait, there's more... come visit us at Maker Faire Atlanta 2019 on Sept 28-29 at the GSU Stadium! It's the greatest Maker Show & Tell of the Southeast!
And our maker community will also be sharing their skills and selling their items at the Makers Market at the West Ponce Music Stroll in downtown Decatur on Sept 28 where Decatur Makers is the beneficiary of the event. #MakersGonnaMake
Decatur Makers Testimonial of the month:
Great place to learn and make things. Everyone I met was very friendly and welcoming and genuinely excited themselves to be there. Great vibe. And they have a ton of awesome tools. I especially like they the have stuff for kids too. Lots of past projects are hanging around so there is no shortage of inspiration. I can't say enough about it. Go if you haven't been!

What We're Making
One of our members helped a friend create a negative stamp of the Scofflaw logo to be used on clay by cutting it on our laser cutter. This friend threw, designed, and glazed some mugs. Beautiful! And several different designs of these mugs will be on sale at the Scofflaw Brewery's 3rd anniversary event this Saturday, Sept 14.
Member Emily learned a lot building these game boards! From creating the checkerboard design to finishing the surfaces, she got hands-on with equipment she hadn't used before with the help of our amazing woodshop makers. Great job!
This teen member made his own leather backpack! Making is his passion and he learns a lot from our adult members, but, he also helps our adult members with their projects too. #TeenMakersRock #IntergenerationalLearning
What We're Sharing
We hosted a group of 25 high school girls from the International Rescue Committee and the Global Village Project as part of a DNA Barcoding Symposium funded by the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance of Emory University. Our goal is to expose minority populations to hands-on Biology experiences through our BioLab to lower barriers so they may find a passion in these STEM fields.
Let's play with resin! That was the goal and lots of kids and adults showed up to see what it was all about as they mixed the chemicals, added their splashes of color, and created their DIY drink coaster designs at our free community event. #epoxy #resin #fun
We're continuing to share our stories with the help of our good friend (and Decatur Makers member) Mike Johnson of DecaturFM, as we iron out our podcast skills. Click here to listen to our second podcast where we talk about visiting other Atlanta makerspaces, French cleats, and other maker-y topics.
What's Coming Up
We have lots of classes and workshops to help people get hands-on and learn new things. And we share our stories at lots of local events. To keep up with what we have going down, follow us on MeetUp or check out our website Events page.
