Maker Faire Atlanta 2019!

WOW! It was sunny. It was HOT! There were So. Many. Makers. What an amazing couple of days at Maker Faire Atlanta 2019 on Sept 28-29! In the new location at the Georgia State University Stadium (former Turner Field), the Greatest Show-And-Tell of the Year had tons of space for makers of all kinds from all across the southeast to share their creative and inspiring DIY ideas. #EveryOneIsAMaker

What did Decatur Makers bring to the party? Everything our 26 foot rental truck could carry, including our gold-medal community-built makerspace competition sign, our champion Barbie and Ken Power Racing Series cars, our new tshirt design by our artist member, David "Doodleslice" Cohen, and lots more.

Thanks huge to all our wonderful volunteers who contributed in so many ways to make our weekend such a success! #MakersGonnaMake #MFA2019

Decatur Makers Testimonial of the month:
Decatur Makers rocks. It's a communal place for creating and learning. There is always someone to learn from, and someone to help.

What We're Making

Member Katie Jo has turned her love of making whimsical art into a business by selling items like this remote controlled lighted treasure chest made at our space. All her items will make you smile :)

With a little help from his maker friends, member Clay's first finished project on our large CNC router turned out great. Prost to the amazing DIY decorations for your Oktoberfest party! We're sure our invite is in the mail...

This teen member traded his friend a bicycle for a broken down, non-working motorized bike; He saw the potential. After cleaning out and fixing the engine, welding a few extra needed parts, some paint and a new seat, he's found the diamond in the rough. Excellent job!

What We're Sharing

We are so lucky to have Char Miller-King (aka woodenmaven) as a member, on our Board, and as one of our woodshop educators. This young man took her Woodshop 101 class, and his mom asked if she would help him with a small project for an upcoming camping trip. Of course, she said yes! He made a small tealight match box holder and was so proud of his hard work. Thanks for making a difference, Char!
We kicked off our inaugural Girls Who Code club this month in support of their goal to close the gender gap in technology by educating, equipping, and inspiring girls with computing skills they'll need to pursue 21st century opportunities. Our Decatur Makers club, focused on high school aged girls, is meeting throughout the 2019-20 school year.
Our middle school Girl Makers Club has had the opportunity to play with some electronics and coding thanks to grant support from the Decatur Rotary Club. This month the girls coded music with EarSketch and built all kids of spinning, rolling projects with continuous rotating motors, circuits, power tools and hot glue. #MakerGirlsRock
