Maker stories captured!

Why tell stories? Because they're fun, entertaining and we always learn something! There are many great stories that come from makers and their creative process, so Decatur Makers has started capturing our amazing makers sharing about themselves and their cool projects: How did they came to work with certain tools? How did they make that beautiful project? What do they think about failures? What inspires them?

Thanks to some of our members who are sharing their story-capturing skills, our community has the chance to work with lights, cameras, microphones and software to learn how to create videos for our Youtube channel and a new Podcast you can hear through our good friends at DecaturFM.

We're learning as we go, and just gettin' started! Interested in getting hands-on with telling stories through video or audio? Keep an eye on our MeetUp calendar to see when our Video Stream Team and Podcast Team gather, and join us.

What We're Making

Member Skyler started Westlake Industries where he sells these awesomely creative clocks. Each Tempo Clock, which was prototyped at Decatur Makers, is hand assembled starting with the circuit board through the beautiful woodworking. It's 11:45 somewhere! #electronics #woodworking #smallbusiness

Member Kristie Wilder, founder and Executive Director of non profit iWag, needed a sign for her new location in Decatur. She joined our makerspace, learned how to use our CNC router, designed and cut her sign, painted it with the wrong stuff (we learn by our mistakes!),  sanded,  repainted, and now it's finished. Great job!

Who does the City of Decatur Fire & Rescue Dept call when they need help cutting a specialized piece of high density plastic for their fire trucks? Decatur Makers! Huge thanks to our Makerspace Manager, Kevin Arne, for helping them out. #makersgonnahelp

What We're Sharing

Our Girl Makers Club meeting in August was full of middle school girls getting hands on with crocheting, lighting ceramic tile art on fire for a cool effect, and learning to weave plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Thanks to all our volunteers including our friends at DreamWeave Alliance for helping out. More mat-making in September; Join us!
We had a grossly fun Wednesday evening at the Decatur Library hosting a DIY DNA Necklace workshop where youth pulled their own DNA from cheek cells. After getting hands-on with real-world biology techniques, they used pipettes to isolate their DNA into their own necklace vial. This program was funded in part by the DeKalb Library Foundation.
We love hosting our good friends the Decatur Education Foundation's Opportunity Partnership mentors and mentees! This month the kids (and adults!) worked hard building a Little Free Library for their community, as well as building circuits with our circuit blocks and telling stories by making lots of buttons. So inspiring watching them explore, learn and create! #makerkidsrock
