Decatur Makers Named Regional Hub in National MakerEd Program

As the first participant in Georgia and the third in the Southeast, Decatur Makers is growing its support of educators working with K-12 students after being accepted as a regional hub in the national MakerEd “Making Spaces” program.  Woot Woot!

The Making Spaces Program, supported by Cognizant and Google, is a Research Practice Partnership led by MakerEd and Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh (CMP) with educational institutions across the nation, and has an ambitious goal to sustainably incorporate making into learning environments across the country.

Over this 30-month program, we will be growing our current youth and teacher STEAM outreach programming to incorporate maker-led education into schools and other organizations supporting K-12 education in the local Atlanta area through professional development, planning and funding support, and evaluation processes. Long term, we hope to support schools and organizations across Georgia. #makersgonnamake #STEAMeducation

Decatur Makers Testimonial of the month:
This is a true 5 out of 5 stars place. If you have a project that you want to work on, this is a place where you can come get help. Also if you're good at making things you can come share the skills that you have.

What We're Making

Member Jessie rocked this chalkboard upgrade with a ton of sanding and prep in our woodshop before finishing it just in time for Wallers Coffee Shop open mic night last month. #supportlocal #decaturga

Member Kenny, built this "smart" dog door that would let his dog out but keep his cat in once he teaches his dog to press the red button to get out! Click here for a video reenactment of his success (until the cat outsmarts him...) Kenny laser cut a hard dog door with an insert in the base for magnets, and designed and 3D printed a locking mechanism that can be opened or closed by a servo motor. There's a sensor on the outside to know when the dog (or the cat, if it's escaped) is ready to come in. #goodluckoutsmartingacat

We’re loving our dual-extruder 3D printer for jobs like this by member Chris G: printing a brain with water soluble supports for easy project cleanup. #3dprinting #brain #makersgonnamake #watersoluble #filament

What We're Sharing

Great turn out for the kickoff of our monthly Money Makers MeetUp for entrepreneurs and small business folks looking to make money with their making skills. Check out our MeetUp calendar that's also linked to the Events Page of our website for info on the next meeting. #entrepreneur #smallbusiness #makersgonnamake #money
There were lots of Cub Scouts building their Pinewood Derby cars with our help over the past several weeks! Bandsaws, drill presses, and power sanders, oh my! Add dremels, sandpaper, and hot glue guns and these kids were busy making amazing rolling creations. Good luck to all the kids (and their adults) at the races!
We had an amazingly creative group of middle schoolers at our most recent Girl Makers Club meeting! They worked very diligently making felt cuffs that lit up with conductive thread, battery packs, and sewable LED lights, as well as lots of felt decorations such as flowers, a NY Yankees logo, and butterflies. They also built tabletop pinball machines using pegboard, cardboard, and rubberbands, and created 2D kinetic works of art based on work by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam
