Student Award Night Winners

I would like to congratulate all the scholarship award winners on behalf of the MN-IFT Scholarship committee. These awards are given to encourage leadership, academic achievement, professional development, volunteer service, and to support research in Food Science.

The committee looked at a number of criteria including academic achievement, research beyond courses, past honors, extra-curricular activities, conference participation. It is an honor to be selected for these awards and we offer our warmest congratulations.

George Youland

George Youland, among the original organizers of the Minnesota IFT Section and its first chair, died on March 1 at the age of 88. A 50+ year member of IFT, he was born and grew up in Boston and attended the University of Massachusetts under the GI bill after serving in the armed forces in the Phillippines. He earned his B.S. degree in Food Science at the University of Massachusetts in 1954, and then M.S. in Food Science at Washington State in Pullman, WA. He joined Green Giant, in LeSueur, MN, which was his location when the Minnesota Section of IFT was first established with him as chair in 1957. He later moved to Hubinger Company in Keokuk, IA and then back to Minnesota with International Multifoods, from which position he retired in 1986. His wife Jean predeceased him. He leaves two sons, Douglas, in St. Paul, and David, in Kingsport, TN.
