SOCIETY OF DESIGNER CRAFTSMEN
I was delighted to return from my summer holidays to learn that I had been elected to The Society Of Designer Craftsmen. Founded in 1887 as the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society by Walter Crane and William Morris, the Society gives a voice to beautiful, challenging and exciting work that is distinct from the traditional Fine Arts. Sir Christopher Frayling is the current President of the Society which is based in Rivington Street, with its own dedicated gallery space; the Society offers a point of contact for buyers who wish to commission their own work.
TRIBAS
TRIBAS
As the largest and oldest multidisciplinary Society in the UK, membership is governed by a rigorous selection process. Eight pieces are submitted to be judged by a panel of experts who look for challenging works which can be decorative, functional or both. They expect members to have a strong and innovative design sense with the skills, craftsmanship and sensitivity to materials to make the objects they design.

Tribas, for example, was designed to reflect beautiful harmony of English white Ash and Olive Ash in a simple design that offers the sitter the maximum degree of comfort and correct posture whilst using materials as economically as possible.
Luna
LUNA
Another selection piece, Luna, has a base fabricated from turned and lacquered laminated birch plywood which supports a top of sandblasted, scrubbed and bleached Oak.
Midas
MIDAS
Straddling the boundary between design and art, Midas is a pair of chairs whose simplicity belies their sophisticated construction. Also submitted to the panel for evaluation, they were created by laminating Beech and Bog Oak, the Beech was then lacquered with metallic paint whilst the Bog Oak was simply finished with Oil.
Competition
BOX 18
From time to time we thought it'd be fun to run a competition.

This month we're offering 10% off the sale price of any item featured on the SHOP
page of our website to the first person to respond by email with the correct answers to the two questions below:

1. What species of timber this box is made from.
2. What form of joint is used to join these boards together.

The closing date for the competition is 4:00pm on Tuesday 24 September. The first correct answer received before then wins the prize and will be announced in the next newsletter.

GOOD LUCK!
Listen
BLACKBERRY
When not hard at it in the studio, at this time of year there's nothing better than gathering and preserving wild food. We hope you enjoy listening to our latest sound track whilst making your jam!

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter. If you know of anyone you think might enjoy it, please feel free to pass it on.
                                                                                                          Many thanks,
                                                                                                                     James.
