Hūtia te rito o te harakeke,
Kei whea te komako e kō?
Ka rere ki uta, ka rere ki tai.
Kī mai koe ki a au, he aha te mea nui o te ao?
Māku e kī atu,
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
If you pluck out the flax shoot,
where will the bellbird sing?
It will fly inland, it will fly seawards.
If you ask me,
What is the most important thing in the world?
I will reply, People! People! People!

Kia ora e te KPI Programme whānau

This week our Aotearoa ‘team of 5 million’ achieved an incredible milestone – together we eliminated COVID-19. It is a story of persistence in the face of adversity and provides an exemplary example of how united focus and collective action can solve a complex problem.

We appreciate for mental health and addiction services across Aotearoa the next chapter will present new challenges as we respond to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on lives and livelihoods, and work with people, whānau and communities through their recoveries.

The pandemic response has encouraged us to come up with and implement new service delivery possibilities at pace. It has also enabled us to learn how technology can enhance the therapeutic engagement we have with tāngata whai ora and their whānau and understand its limitations in certain contexts.

Next week we kick off the first of our June KPI forums via Zoom. It will be the first time in the Programme’s history that we will bring the sector together in a virtual setting. Our June forums have been deliberately designed to create space for services across Aotearoa to explore the indicator data before the lockdown and to document our ‘in time’ experiences and insights from the COVID-19 response.

There is still time to register for the June forums and the links to these are below. We encourage you not to miss this opportunity to explore and learn from other services and inform the focus of the KPI Programme over the coming months so together we can continue to take collective action to solve some of our most pressing challenges.

Spotlight on our Sponsors

Governance of the Programme is provided by the mental health and addiction KPI Programme Sponsor Group. The sponsors include senior Ministry of Health, DHB, NGO and tāngata whai ora representatives at both a clinical and managerial level.

Kia ora, I'm Dr Alison Masters

I'm from Wellington which I have called home for the past 30 years. I was born and raised in Hamilton, attended university in Auckland and then completed most of my psychiatry training in London.
As co-chair I work with fellow chair, Karla Bergquist and the Programme team to lead the Sponsor Group and support delivery of the KPI Programme Strategy.
My aspirations for the Programme are that it continues to belong to, and be led by the sector, so it is well positioned to drive data informed capability that enable mental health and addiction services deliver excellent outcomes. I am particularly passionate about ensuring collaboration is an essential part of our national health system.

The things I enjoy most are connection with my family, friends, and those unique moments between people that can surprise and energise me. For me, it is all about connection. Connection with nature especially gardening and walks. Connection with the people who use our services, as this is always a reminder of why it is a privilege to be a psychiatrist and to receive the trust that is given to us.

I am looking forward to continuing to work with the sector and providing leadership that supports the Programme to grow and thrive through this next chapter.

MHAKPI website and tools refresh – your opportunity to tell us what you need

The Mental Health and Addictions KPI Programme website is due to be refreshed. Rather than go ahead and design a site with features and information we think you may like… we want you, the people using it, to tell us what you do and don’t like about the current site and what new features you’d love to see.

Our short survey will take about 10 minutes to complete.

Share your feedback here
We hope you are enjoying the Mental Health and Addictions KPI Programme newsletter - ‘The Indicator’. If you would like to showcase your KPI stories, share the great work of your teams or even write a brief opinion piece, we’d love to hear from you
