A beautiful summer day in the park at the South Waterfront Farmers Market in 2018.

Enjoy These 3 June Events at Elizabeth Caruthers

Summer has officially begun and it’s time for some fun in the sun! And what better place is there to play than in the park? As usual, Elizabeth Caruthers Park will be packed with several exciting programs and events throughout the summer season.

Here are three to take advantage of this June:

1. Thursday, June 6th, 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm: Opening Day of the 2019 South Waterfront Farmers Market

Your local one-stop shop to score fresh eggs, Alaskan sockeye salmon, handmade pies, and so much more—The South Waterfront Farmers Market—is back for its 8th summer season.

Join us for Opening Day on Thursday, June 6th from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm for live entertainment, giveaways, and fabulous food! As always, there will be an abundance of local seasonal produce and artisanal foods to shop for as well as hot foods for a picnic in the park.

There’ll also be live music the entire day, starting off at 2:00 pm with a mix of light jazz, a bit of bluegrass, and 60’s/70’s tunes from Rick & Barb McCullough followed by Hurqalya’s Pan-Mediterranean world beatnik tunes from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. And if you want to strut the market in style, make sure to visit Ronald McDonald House Charities at their tent as they will be giving away 15 of our gorgeous new green shirts to the first 15 visitors!

For more information, visit: www.southwaterfront.com/farmers-market or our Facebook event at: https://www.facebook.com/events/2017447768364563/

2. Sunday, June 9th, 8:00 am: Zero Prostate Cancer Run

Start your summer off on the right foot by participating in this run that raises money to support a cure for prostate cancer, a disease that affects 1 in 9 men. Funds raised at this event in Portland will provide research for new treatments, free prostate cancer testing, and education for men and families about prostate cancer.

Before the 5k run/walk and 1 mile walk begins at 9:30 am, visit the Men’s Health Fair starting at 8:00 am. Kids can also participate by running in the Kids Superhero Dash for Dad at 8:45 am. There will also be a post-race celebration filled with music, food, and prizes.

For more information, visit: https://tinyurl.com/zeroprostatecancerrun19

3. Sunday, June 30th, 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Make Music Day PDX

Celebrate the summer solstice with this free concert with “Music By The People, For The People.” Make Music Day PDX was inspired by the Fetede la Musique, an annual music celebration that originated in France in 1982 that encourages people to play music outside in public spaces and parks. So pack a picnic, sit back, and get ready to listen to some sweet tunes from your fellow Portlanders!

In early May 2019, ZRZ Realty announced its plans with Live Nation to construct an outdoor amphitheater in the South Waterfront.

Plans for Performance Venue at Zidell Yards

On Monday, May 6th, ZRZ Realty—owned and operated by the Zidell family—hosted a meeting for the South Waterfront community at which the group provided an update on interim uses at Zidell Yards.

At this meeting, ZRZ Realty announced that it is currently in negotiations with the events promoter and venue operator Live Nation to construct an outdoor amphitheater at Zidell Yards.

The envisioned amphitheater would be located on the Zidell’s property between the Ross Island Bridge and Tilikum Crossing. This property is the largest and last undeveloped parcel of land in central Portland. In the past, the parcel has been used to host the music festival Project Pabst, performances by the traveling equestrian show Cavalia, food events hosted by Feast Portland, and even drive-in movie nights.

In 2016, the Zidells revealed a development plan that included approximately five million square feet of mixed use retail, residential, and office space in this 33-acre undeveloped space along the Willamette River. However, this development plan was suspended last summer.

ZRZ Realty’s newly revealed concept announced at the neighborhood meeting last month would feature an amphitheater with 10,000 seats, which according to The Oregonian would make it one of the largest music and performance venues in Portland right after the Moda Center.

“Building an arts ecosystem has always been a goal of our family as we develop this land,” says Charlene Zidell, the director of corporate relations and communications for the Zidell Companies. “We believe this will be a great interim use for our site.”

So when should you expect to see star-studded shows in the South Waterfront? The short answer is: uncertain. The plans for the performance venue are still in the beginning stages with many logistical questions yet to be determined. Further, the plan will need City approval as a temporary use, as well as design review will need to occur. So, if you are wanting to catch Beyoncé in the South Waterfront this summer, you may have to wait. Regardless, we are excited that the Zidell family continues to try to activate the community through innovative and fun uses that help bolster the community’s identity as a fantastic place to live, work and play. South Waterfront Community Relations will make sure to keep
you updated on the progress of this plan as it develops.

South Waterfront Community Association (SWCA) Board Membership Change

In May, South Waterfront Community Association (SWCA) said goodbye to one its longest tenured Board members, Hilary Alter of Zidell Companies. Hilary joined SWCA in 2014 as the representative from the Zidell Companies. As different planning efforts materialized for the Zidell family (The Emery, The Gantry, various temporary uses), Hilary remained a consistent, positive voice for the South Waterfront community. She helped with the transition from a three-person board to the seven-member board of today. Further, Hilary provided sound financial oversight as the SWCA Treasurer. We wish Hilary all the best as she transitions as a Project Manager at Urban Renaissance Group here in Portland.

Heartworm in Portland is increasing!  Last year Heartworm disease increased by 21% in the United States. Portland made the top 10 list for positive tests in March and Salem is number one in new cases for the month of May.

Most people consider their pets as family members and wouldn’t knowingly expose them to infection with a potentially fatal disease that ultimately compromises the length and quality of their lives. Talk with your Veterinarian about annual Heartworm testing and prevention!
