Local Arts Events to Attend In August

If you’re an admirer of the arts, and especially enjoy viewing the arts al fresco, then August is going to be an amazing month for you! South Waterfront Community Relations is excited to be co-hosting multiple free outdoor performances throughout August that will take place at two of the South Waterfront’s most scenic venues, the South Waterfront Greenway and Elizabeth Caruthers Park.

The first can’t-miss cultural event to mark on your calendar is Opera a la Carte on Sunday, August 11th at 6:30 pm at the end of SW Pennoyer abutting the Greenway between the Atwater and the Meriwether. Singers from The Portland Opera will enchant you with extraordinarily sung arias, duets, and ensemble pieces for this special summertime performance. We encourage you to bring your neighbor and a lawn chair for the show, where there will also be a wine raffle to help support future Opera a la Carte performances. You’ll also be able to purchase food and drink from River Parkway Bistro as it will be staying open late.

The 2019 Opera a la Carte performance is brought to you by South Waterfront Community Relations, Zidell Inc., Sean Z Becker Real Estate, the Meriwether condominium, Community Management Inc., David Hill Vineyard and Winery, Gary Maffei, Dede DeJager, Marchesi Vineyards, and Caveau.

Next up on the culture calendar is our annual Movie + Concert in the Park on Thursday, August 22nd starting at 6:30 p.m. Every summer since 2013, SWCR has partnered with Portland Parks & Recreation and many generous sponsors to host free Movies + Concerts in the Park. In previous years, SWCR has brought a wide range of classic flicks to the big screen, including the wonderfully wacky, sugar-fueled world of Willy Wonka as well as the gripping archaeological adventures of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This year’s Movie + Concert in the Park will begin with a classic rock performance from The Mars Rovers at 6:30 pm followed by a showing of the heartwarming Disney classic Up at dusk. Don’t forget that you can start your afternoon off at the South Waterfront Farmers market from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm! There’ll be plenty of sweet treats like fresh berries, kettle corn, and ice cream for you to stock up on for the evening’s festivities.

Chances to Cycle Through The City This Month

Cyclists, hold onto your handlebars because this month there’s not just one but two opportunities for you to wheel away on car-free streets and bridges! The first signature cycling event to be held this August is the 24th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday August 11th starting at 7:00 a.m. The purpose of this bike and pedestrian-friendly community event that began back in 1996 is to provide Portlanders with access to city views that are only available to motorists.

As per tradition, there will be four different ride options to choose from at this year’s Providence Bridge Pedal, including the 20-mile “Main Ride” route that extends from the Sellwood Bridge to the Fremont Bridge. Those interested in a more leisurely launch should
consider the “Fremont Express” ride that starts with a picturesque sunrise breakfast on top of the Fremont Bridge. There is also a special free “Kids Pedal” dedicated to children aged 12 or younger as well as the “Bridge Stride,” a 5 mile route that crosses the Fremont and Steel Bridges. Get ready to gear up again just two weeks later, as the City of Portland will be hosting Sunday Parkways on August 25th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Each summer, the City or Portland organizes set routes for Sunday Parkways in which cyclists and pedestrians can ride on car-free roads throughout five different areas of Portland. Now in its 12th season, this free and family-friendly event encourages Portlanders to use active transportation—whether it be by walking, biking, or rolling—to explore the city.

According to Travel Portland, the 7-mile “Green Loop” route scheduled for August 25th is the only Sunday Parkways route that crosses the Willamette River. The route will cross both the Broadway Bridge and even the South Waterfront’s very own Tilikum Crossing. Walking tours of the Central City are also available for those who would rather walk than wheel around. For more information about the Sunday Parkways to be held on August 25th, visit:

Here’s to many brilliant and beautiful bike rides ‘round the city this August!

Save the Date for Opera a la Cart!

Opera a la Cart is back! The Portland Opera will be performing on Sunday, August 11th at 6:30 pm at the end of SW Pennoyer abutting the Greenway between the Atwater and Meriwether. We encourage all to save the date for this special summertime performance of the arts. Bring your neighbor, a lawn chair, and a refreshing drink.
